Outlaw Ultima Truck Run and Break

- I did get the Outlaw Ultima Truck out for a run, but it was a very short one. It was taking off on the rear wheels and one side lifted and when it came back down something diff seems to have popped. It still moves but has a nasty grinding noise from inside the transmission. I am assuming the internal diff gears, but I won’t know until I tear it down and see. Enjoy what footage there was!
You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

OH the joys of vintage RC!
Sometimes it's easy to forget just how old some of these vehicles are mate, and time takes its toll on everything!
And,when we aquire these old rigs,we don't usually know how hard they have been driven/looked after in their earlier years.
But,she looked great in action Addam,I love that truck.
And as a bonus, spares should be readily available thanks to the re re models on that chassis.
Be interesting to see a video on the strip down/investigation, and repair!
Hope you get her sorted as and when buddy. 😊 👍 👍 👍
It was a little bit of a bummer to see it stop working right, it is par for the course on maiden run s after a rebuild or even a new build for issues to arise. I was able to tear it down yesterday and figure out what was wrong with it. You are going to shake you head at me when you find out what it was, I know I was! Thankfully a quick fix with parts on hand and it should be good to go for another run!!! It s a terrific looking truck and I am glad to have it fixed!! I will get a video done of it soon!!
@@AddamsPlayground
He he.....we all make mistakes buddy,it's what makes us human!
Look forward to seeing the next part! 😉 👍 👍 👍
Really neat to see this! This was my first hobby grade rc! Still have it and the box. I broke it in the early 2000s when I returned to rc and couldn't get the part so I bought a Traxxas Rustler when they were still kits. I painted mine black as well, had to put gold team associated shocks on the back because one broke. I got it as a ultimate ready to run kit from Tower Hobbies with the old dial style chargers.
I am glad you enjoyed it. I will get it fixed back up and get a proper run video done with it! I am sure you had a great time with yours, it runs really nice from the brief experience I had with it! Part can be a little tricky to find and depending on the kit and part needed it can be rather expensive but the eBay being as big and broad as it is makes finding rare suff a lot easier than in the past. I have gotten parts from Italy, Germany, France, the UK, Greece, and the Philippines in the past for things not available here! I do remember back in the day when you could get the kit or the full package from the catalogs. It is how my Super Blackfoot came to me as well as a complete package. Take care and have a great weekend!
He he, my heart genuinely skipped a beat when you added that little explosion graphic! I was just sitting calmly watching the video, I didn't expect drama like that...
Anyway, it's part of the hobby, you already said it, you have an idea where it might be bad, just tear it down and see what's going on... Of course on an old truck like that, I hope it's easy enough to get parts... I hate having non-functional RC's on the shelf, sadly I admit I have a few, he he...
LOL! I rarely do stuff like that but it seemed fitting to add the explosion in there! I will get it torn down and figure out what went wrong. Something popped and I assume it is the internals of the diff as it does not feel like the other main gears. The ones on the outside I can see are fine. It happens and I am did not get down hearted about it even though it is a bummer but I will be back on the hunt for parts soon. These are not the easiest to find parts for but I will track them down one way or another! I don't like broken ones sitting around! Take care Mads and have a great rest of the week!
😂😂😂😂
That truck looked so good doing its thing. Good luck with the repair. Hope to see it again in the drit.
It was really running great until it didn't LOL! I can't fault it, 34 years old and has been run a good bit prior something in there decided it was time for retirement! I will get it torn down and get what is needed and get it fixed. I was having too much for to not drive it again! As well as it ran it will probably hit the track briefly!
Dr Addam. Wow, you are So Lucky to have been gifted with another problem. This is part of what makes us such Great RCers. Remember, when trying to find the car keys it helps to stop looking for them. Happy hunting Sherlock. You'll fix it. Look forward to your followup video.😊
It was a bit of a bummer to have it break something but being 30+ years old and run prior to me getting it it is a likely thing to happen. I am hoping the parts chassis I have may have the parts needed to get it going again but if not I will be back on the parts hunt. I will be digging into it this weekend and figuring out the issue. It will be back as soon as possible, the little tease of drive I got really makes me want to get it fixed back up!
@@AddamsPlayground A couple years ago I got a Traxxas Stampede on ebay. It was So gutless it was pathetic. I installed a brushless motor and on the first run it blew one of the axelshafes. I replaced the axelshafes with metal axelshafes and then it blew the plastic gears in the transmission. Now, after 1 year of running it's bullet proof. One of my Best RCs Ever. And I almost threw it in the trash. Lesson learned.
@@mattmiller5014 I have an old Stampede that has been repaired many, many, many times! LOL! I do need to upgrade the slipper clutch in it as it cannot handle the power of the brushless motor I have in there. I need to fit one of the more modern slipper clutches into it. One of the reasons I love RC is as long as there are parts available they never die!
I absolutely love this truck and it's so fast!! I'm sure you'll get the gear issue fixed no problem. Shouldn't be too difficult
It was running really great until it didn't! LOL! I will get it torn apart and figure out what is going on and get it all fixed back up. It will be back, it ran to well to give up on it!
Murphy paid ya a visit.. Still a cool rig bet its sill a mising shim or something.. Thanks for sharing Addam always enjoy bud have a great 4th !!!
Something in there got unhappy real fast! I will get it torn down and find out what went wrong. I will get it fixed up as soon as I can. Take care and have a safe and happy 4th!
Short but sweet, Addam! It was all going so well, then you gave me a shock with that explosion, even though you already told me it was gonna break! 😅. Hope it's an easy fix, but with your experience it should be a piece of cake. Take care bud! 😎🦫👍
LOL, I had forgotten I had those little special affects but it was funny to "see: it break out there! I am hoping the junker kit I bought for the front body mount and suspension link has what I need in it to get it back up and running. If not it back to the parts hunt and we will see what else ends up showing up from that! LOL! I always seem to find 5 or 6 things I don't need but really want when parts hunting LOL!!!! I really want to get it back out there and drive it some more, it was going really nicely until the pop! Take care Mark and have a great rest of your week mate!
Was ripping until the carnage! It sucks when they break that quickly. That truck is in good hands and will be back up and running in no time I’m sure!
Yes, it was running really nice before whatever in there decided to retire. I am thinking it was either the cross pin in the diff left snapped or the bevel gears were too worn and started rounding over and skipping. I will see soon once it is all torn down. I will get fixed back and running as soon as I can. One of the risks of running 34 year old parts! LOL!
Ohhh snap! Hopefully nothing too serious. Prolly more of a time sink to have to explore what went wrong... The little fireball caught me off guard lol! For a second I thought it was real HAH!
LOL! Since the run was so short I thought I would add a touch of flair to the time of death of whatever failed in the diff! I will get it stripped down and track down the parts needed. I assume it was either the cross pin in the diff or the gears inside it started to roll over and slip. It will be back though, it looks too good and ran to well to sit around broken.
Ah, the joys of RC cars! My money is on the diff, like you think.
Yeah, it was a bummer but the rear end had some damaged when I got it so who know what may be the issue. In the play back of the run it looks and sounds like the diff on where it failed and the overall smoothness of it rolling back and forth I think the big gears are fine. It is either the cross shaft in the diff snapped or the teeth on the internal gears just started to roll over.
Well it looked great! Like you said, it sounds like the diff. Hopefully sourcing the parts needed won’t be too hard….or overly expensive!👍😊
I think the diff is the same as many of the others, at least I hope so! The old Kyosho kits are really difficult to find parts for at times! Got to be in the right place at the right time sometimes to find things. It will get rebuilt and out running again as the brief period of time it was running it was really nice! It will be back, how long it will be depends on the parts hunt!
Lovely body shell ❤💛🖤
Thanks! It turned out looking great and ran well for a moment! It will be back once I get it fixed and running properly again.
I share your pain. Going through the same thing with the dynablaster. Frustrating.
Yeah, not the excitement I was looking for but I will get it torn down and figure what I need to track down. I am assuming it is either the cross pin snapped or the internal diff gears just got rounded over and are slipping now. It is too pretty and nice driving to sit there broken though!
Hi Addam🤠👩, What a shame it got a problem!, hopefully it will be an easy fix when you get to it mate. It shocked us both when the flames came out of it😳😂, Nice custom editing mate👌.
We both hope all is well with you and your family Addam🙏🦘🇦🇺
LOL, I had to enhance it with a bit of flames when it broke! LOL! I will get it torn down and fixed as it was running way to good to leave it busted! But at 34 years old and previously run a good bit who knows what decided to stop working right in there! I am doing well and I hope the both of you are as well! Take care and talk to you soon!
Looked great running Addam a shame should the transmission.. I’m sure you’ll be able to fix it 😊😊 👍👍 Pete
It was running great until it wasn't! Not the desired outcome but it happens and I have tear it down and figure out what stopped anting to play and get it fixed. Tacking down the parts may take a while but it will get fixed! It is too good looking and ran to nice to sit around broken!
Cool truck! You’ll get it fixed no worries.
It was a bit of a bummer something in there decided to give up but it was running well until then. I really need to drive it some more so I will get it torn down and fixed up as soon as I can!
@@AddamsPlayground hopefully something simple and not too expensive!
Yikes you never want to hear that sound in a rc! It looks good and you should be able to get it going with a simple fix hopefully.
Not a good sound at all. I am hoping it is a quick and easy. I will get it torn down and fixed back up as soon as I can.
The chassis was looking really good over the bumps. Shame about the gearbox. That would have wound me up. Parts...more flipping parts. But it was looking really good and a bit of fun for sure
It was unfortunate as it was driving really well out there! I did not let it get me down, I know this is always a possibility with the old ones! Those shocks on it work perfectly! I will get it torn down and figure out what is needed and then go hunting for that! It will be back as I need to drive it some more for sure, it was nice while it lasted!
Dang, dude. That's too bad. It was haulin' butt, pulling wheelies, it looked so good out there... Until Cap'n Crunch came to visit. Lol! Hopefully it's an easy fix. It kinda reminds me of the ORV chassis' making the clicky-click under load. Hopefully it's just a simple repair.
Yeah, a bit of a bummer but it is 34 years old and has been run a good bit prior. I am pretty sure it is either the cross pin in the diff broke or the internal gears of the diff just rolled over and are now skipping. It will get fixed for sure, it is too pretty and was running to nice to sit there broken!
Looked good while it was running , hope its a easy cheap fix , 🤞🤞
It was going well and looked great for a moment! LOL!
If it is a common diff it may not be too mad, if it is an uncommon one I may have to go sell some blood LOL! Either way it is going to get fixed, it is too great looking of a truck to sit there broken!
Yep…so tough driving the old kits. They look great but you can almost expect something to break at any moment.
I did get it torn down and found out the issue with it. I sat there shaking my head for a while and got it fixed, simple and quick one, I just have to get it back out for a run. It has been so hot and humid here I have had zero interest in going out with it yet though, ones it simmers down some I will get out there with it.
@@AddamsPlayground I hear ya! We are having a heat wave up here and most houses, including mine, don’t have air conditioning. There’s never been a need but now canada gets crazy heat so all new builds have heat pumps. We are hitting about 90 degrees on the west coast! So yeah…not a lot of interest right now to build/run stuff. It’s about 80-85 in the house.
@@FastFreddyRC ughhh, I would be so angry! I hate being hot and sweaty! One of the reasons I love the colder months so much. No bugs and no heat!!
Man that sucks when you think you’re done and boom 😭.
LOL yup but it is fine, I know it is old and has been run a bunch before I got it so things like this happen. I will get it torn down and find out what decided to retire and get it fixed! It is too nice to sit around broken!
It looked great while it was running. In the no to distant past I had a similar experience and it tuned out to be something little I omitted. It could be the previous owner left out some small part. I know what you're feeling and it sucks.
It is quite possible it is due to user error, I definitely have not ruled that out! I am thinking it was either the cross pin in the diff left snapped or the bevel gears were too worn and started rounding over and skipping. I will see soon once it is all torn down. I will get fixed back and running as soon as I can as it was running really nice out there until whatever it is retired from use! LOL!
Hope you find the issue and can sort it out Addam 🙏see you on the next one 😁
Yeah, I will get it torn down and find out what went south and get it fixed as soon as I can. That little tease of a run was enough to know it is going to be a fun one to drive!!
Bad luck, sorry to hear about the issues. Beautiful looking truck though. Hope it's an easy fix
I will be digging into it this weekend to see what failed. I am hopeful it is a quick and easy fix and not a long parts hunt but if it is then I will find them! I need to get it running again as it was really going out there!
@AddamsPlayground love your dedication to these builds. Thanks for the response
@@BigDumbMeRC thank you, and it is my pleasure!
Hi, it drives very well, you have that loan with humps that is perfect for suspension test and this is one of the best I seen between your models (it's a Kyosho!) Ciao!!
Yes it was running well out there for a moment! It was soaking up the lumps very nicely and it felt good overall. I love driving over that section of the yard a lot, the rolling lumps are too much fun! I will get it torn down and find the parts I need to get it going again!
@@AddamsPlayground Good luck!
Last
This reminds me of my radio shack four-wheeler I had absolutely loved it tried to get the right speed out of it finally put a brushless system in it It's hard to explain but the rear diff had a square peg that went into a square hole after I put the brushless system in it I could hear it spinning which is amazing because it's a tight fit I took it to my local hobby shop he epoxied it together It lasted for about 2 minutes It actually did a couple wheelies I absolutely loved it but I didn't drive it much cuz I didn't want to completely strip out the rear diff I eventually sold it or traded it to a friend
I guess the extra punch may have stressed it out from the lipo power but I am assuming there was something fairly worn in the I missed in the rebuild. Or something just decided it no longer wanted to play and retired! Either ay it will get torn down and fixed.
@@AddamsPlayground well you could just keep driving it and see what fails put them it will take out another part I can't wait to find out what it was
@@nomusicrc I have done it before! The Cougar Classic ended up getting part of the geartrain melted as I could not figure out what was wrong, figure it out after that! That one is still in a box in pieces waiting for me to order new parts. I am in no hurry as I kind of hate it now! LOL!
That’s one of the nicest looking stadium trucks I hope it’s just a bad bushing or bearing
It really is a great looking truck and it was running so well! It felt great until whatever in there decided to not want to work right anymore! I will get it torn down and see what needs to be fixed up and get that stuff. I really want to drive it again, that teaser was not enough at all!
Annoying Addam. I hope you'll figure it out soon. And please keep us informed. The saved running footages looks cool👍
It was running well but something in there decided it was time to quit! I will get it fixed up and back running as soon as I can. I was having a lot of fun for a few minutes and I need more of that! LOL! Take care Dirk
@@AddamsPlayground I know you're very experienced and I don't know the car in every details, so I didn't ask. Has this ca unviversal drive shafts which are made of two pieces so the shaft can flex in length? The issue might sit in there, wear, dirt rust🤔
@@RCBirds No it has standard dog bones in the rear. It is definitely coming from inside the transmission.
Cool RC. Not cool how short the run was.
Yeah it was a bit of a bummer to have it go out so quickly but it was running great for a minute! I will get is fixed back up and back out there as soon as I can!
Lets hope I cand thise rims for you next weekend I will look for the tyres also 🤞
Actually I did find a set that are on their way. Fil from Poor Boys RC had a set and is sending them over. They need some attention but should work out fine! Thanks again and if you happen to find a new pair then I will be very happy to buy them from you but do not spend a a bunch of your time searching for them! Thanks a bunch for looking on your trip.
I’m having a similar issue with my son’s Remo hobby rocket and that’s all he wants to drive 😢 hoping we both can fix our trucks soon!
Breakdowns are inevitable but they are always a bit of a bummer! Hope you get yours fixed soon!!
@@AddamsPlayground thanks, I stripped it down again just now and it’s the spur gear, it is worn only in a certain area of the gear not the whole thing which is strange but at least I know the issue now! Time to order parts and get it back up and running! Hope yours is fixed soon too
@@BargainBashersRc It could have been molded slightly off and the teeth may have been real close in one area and too far away in others. My Kyosho Sand Master had a wonky spur gear so it happens!
@@AddamsPlayground ah that makes sense, in ordered 2 last night just to be safe
That was ripping dude.... Bummer something let go... I think you can retro fit the new Ultima parts in that thing, but I'm not a 100% sure... Check the gears for a hair line crack across one side... I seen splines on Tamiya out drives make that kind of noise too....
It was running great until the clicking started... Oh well, at 34 years old and previously used I can completely understand something not wanting to play no more! I will get it torn down and figure out what went out and get it fixed. I will have to compare the diffs to the more modern ones and see what will work. I do have the junker kit here I may be able to salvage things off of if needed. It could be a split gear and the outdrive is slipping, I have not though of that.
It did look awesome 😎 unfortunately it's the way it goes could be just a case of adding shim's 👊
I just got done going through it and when you see the video you will shake your head! LOL! I sure did once I figured it out! LOL! It is back in good running order now though!
Still a neat truck. Hope it works out and you can fix it.
It is really cool and was driving really nice out there until something decided to not do it job any more! LOL! I will dig into and get it back running as it is too cool and fun to sit there busted! It will be back!
@@AddamsPlayground good deal.
That truck rips and looks amazing doing it! Stinks that it was cut short. Those humps in your yard are perfectly spaced for RC fun, did you make the mounds intentionally?
It was doing great until something in there decided to retire! I will get it fixed up and back out there as soon as I can, that little tease of a run was not enough! The humps in the yard is where the septic field settled and it has been that way for almost 50 years now. They are a lot of fun to run over with the RCs and the "grass" is mainly really soft most that has great grip and is super gentle on them if they take a tumble so it is a great spot for the ones I don't want all scratched up!
I'm sure it's an easy fix. Those gearboxes are usually pretty bulletproof. Let us know what the issue was. Truck looks awesome!
I hope so, it was running so well before whatever in there decided to retire. I will get it torn down soon and figure out what is needed. I am hopeful it will be a simple fix as well!
It was a ripper til
It wasn’t lol😂
Exactly! Not the excitement I wanted from it but from the brief bit of running it did, it was rocking and rolling well.
Ahh man that's pretty average sorry to hear that nothing worse than first run mechanical issues especially that deep into the car hoping it's something simple as a pebble stuck easy fix it looked great before it broke had plenty of poke .... I have to ask what step of the RC10 are you on already I'm sure your into it already lol take care mate 👊
Yeah it is a risk in running the old ones but I will get it torn down and figure out what failed and track that down. Finding the parts is going to be the slow part of it all. It was running really nice before whatever it is decided to retire. It looks too good and drives to nice to sit around broken, so it will be back as son as I can get it done. I have not even cracked the box open on the RC10T yet. I will dive into it very soon though and start the build of it though. I am excited to see it built! Take care Mark!
Lasted as long as my JJ ultima 😂 hopefully its fixable 🤞 i guess you could allways swap the gearbox out for a rere one ? To run it atleast 🤔
I was wondering if that would work out. I am not super Kyosho smart so I am not sure what fits from one thing to another. I do have the junker kit here I may be able to rob parts from (fingers crossed) and if not then I will hunt down replacements. It sucks it busted but I do know it is ready to rock and roll once fixed, it ran really nice for a minute! LOL!
@@AddamsPlayground yeah, could be an easy fix, but its a pain getting the box off. Allways good to have a junker 👍
You broke it already? 😂 Does that have the same gearbox as the vintage Ultima? I have always wondered if the 3D printed center gear would hold up. I'm afraid to give my Ultima a real good run because I can't find a replacement gear anywhere! And I have heard those are the first ones to wear down.
LOL yeah, that did not go as planned! The 3D printed gear seems fine. Obviously not much time on it but that did not fail. I assume it is something went in the diff, either the cross shaft or one of the gears but I will have to tear it down to find out. These are are the same internals I think to the ultima but the external gears are different sized a for a lower gear ratio from what I can tell. One of the reasons it took so long to get it rebuilt was finding the right sized gearing. I hate having broken ones sitting around so I will get it torn down soon an searching for parts!
Bummer
Yeah it was a bit of a womp-womp- wahhhh moment but it happens. I will get it fixed back up and out running again as soon as I can!
is it chain driven or rwd mate?
It is the 2wd trans from the Ultima but it has a different external gear set on it. I am not fully sure if the internals are exactly the same or not. I am hoping the junker one I have will have the proper replacement parts I need to get it going again.
@@AddamsPlayground ahhh. i was getting confused with tbe optima .
hope u get it sorted mate 👍
That’s why other manufacturers took over.. better good stuff inside lol…
Yeah, being 34 years old a lot of things have changed since then! Something in the diff di not care for the addition punch of the lipo power. It will get the parts it needs and will get back out there. Hw long it takes to find the parts is the unknown!
