I bought an xmaxx after finding this channel 3.5 years ago after being out of RC probably for 15 years, still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it (and now I have a few more too), thanks Kev!
I gotta say, I'm not impressed with the gears. It like pot metal. When you pay $1500 for an RC you expect something as cheap and easy as the gears to be decent quality. Most people can't drop $1500 and right away spend a whole bunch more on upgrading. If that's the case you're better off buying used for half price and upgrading it. IMO
Yeah, they should include better gears. It's not like the transmission is weak, so they don't need to be weak to protect the car, they're just being cheap.
@@fiercetatsu6782 powdered metal doesn't have to be weak, lots of cordless tools use powdered metal parts, even tools that are rough like impacts. Something about the process Traxxas uses is certainly weak though.
X-Maxx looks like brilliant fun but I wouldn’t buy one, not new anyway. £1000 for something that strips its gears first run out of the box? No thanks! COME ON TRAXXAS, THAT’S UNACCEPTABLE!
He was off-roading with the street/speed gearing and it says on the box not to do that, I’ve had a x maxx for like 3-4 years, stock gears worked the whole time until about last year when I put a way bigger motor on it
I rarely buy new regardless of what it is lol shits just way to expensive all around. Buying used and slowly upgrading what breaks over time is the way to go lol

Ive been driving my xmaxx (version 3 i think?) for the last 6 years and Ive never stripped the central drive gears. Broken 2 rear pinions and a single diff ring gear. The stock servo was replaced after 2 years I believe, but other than that, the thing has been by far the most fun, and most durable vehicle ive driven. Personally I really don't think the gears are all that aweful in my experience.
@@roobedev3496 how hard you bash definitely affects durability. I've certainly heard that the spur and pinions are trash. Maybe I've just been lucky so far.

I just picked up a version 5 xmaxx and man it's a hoot. I do miss my savage when I was a kid. I actually just saw a vid where someone had converted a savage to electric and it was pretty sick.

I believe those are wheelie bars! Not for beginners, but some of the most experienced racers have them on the back of the race cars to prevent wheelies which do tons of damage and prevent inexperienced people from winning races!

My nitro savidge use to munch its gear like crazy! Even after up grading them. Even my local hobby shops couldnt set em so they wouldnt shred themselves🤷♂️

Hey Kevin I bought the new xmaxx 8s that your showing now. I absolutely love it and having a blast. I had the same problem you did and stripped the gears the same day. I replaced the gears with ones from Hot Racing and have not had a problem. I am also able to get it on two wheels, but it takes a little bit, I think you're right about it being the servo. Thanks for your videos love them. Keep on bashing

Do not worry my friend. Aside from the traxxas slash, this is probably the single most famous rc car built in the lats 10 years for its speed, durability, and sheer fun. I mean Kev has bought like 6 of them at this point. If it was really all that bad, do you think he would have done that lol? Its an amazing truck. I've owned one for 6 years and I can still count on one hand the amount of parts I've had to replace on it.

That's insane that the gears do that, that's why I keep my spurs plastic, they're super cheap so I just get a handful, a good pinion and a good plastic spur is the way to go, my vorteks is going over 80 and my spur is perfectly fine
I find it hilarious that you mentioned the savage but not the Traxxas Nitro T-maxx with out that you wouldn’t even have the XMaxx which is totally over priced - I mean first rip & it strips the pinion then need a better steering servo right off rip & brake again so after spending £1500 + you should be set . Xmaxx is a good looking truck though 💯👌🤙🇬🇧
🤔 Are there any skaters in skatepark(s) or do they leave immediately when they see Traxxas and other RC stuff ? 🤔 Seems a nice basher (obviously), those belted tires are a nice upgrade. Unfortunately out of my reach 😅🤝

Hopefully with them putting a 15 tooth pinion in instead of the 18 out of the box max fix the gear shredding. And even the 17 for speed is smaller than the rtr pinion. 🤔 Well see I. Nope gear size made no difference in stripping. Why didn't they put hardened steel like they did the ultimate? That's one thing they knew they could have done since EVERY Xmaxx does that. That's why I run mine on 6s a lot even though I changed to better gears.
I have a traxxas mini max v2 and even with the stock plastic spur, when I’ve put it in one tighter than recommended it still has some play in the gears. The motor never overheats and its lasted a good 6 months now

The latest version and it should be even better, what the tires you mean electronics blow, durability is cool when it snows in winter time where I'm at it's snaps so easily
i dont get it, you didnt seem to be really giving it a hard time and the gears let go pretty quick, did traxxas test this before releasing it to the public? i have a friend with an older xmaxx and he also goes through stock gears and aftermarket gears once every couple of runs, how is this the best rc car?
If you run the old tyres which balloon, do you get a higher top speed because the circumference is bigger? Or doesn’t it turn out like that in real life?

This is what I did.
Batteries charger and X-maxx for 750.
They use powdered metal and it’s super weird that traxxas of all companies is the one cutting such costs

I bought a fiesta st150 off my mate for a grand. That puts things into perspective.

Those TLR Typhons are tough as hell. I switched mine over to speedruns but I wanna get another and do Kraton arms and bigger wheels for bashing.

Traxxas still taking the p1ss. The XMaxx version 5 and yet it still has monkey metal gears and toy grade servo.
