    Y'all. This episode was such a surprise, and such a joy! I know it was just to show off the Gamegenics pieces, but it was handled well, and the lack of other commercials made up for it. And dang if those little hex trays for the bits don't look amazing. I might have to get them. So, success there!
    If you're going to go back and play more older games that gamegenics has supplies for, I'm in!

    I loved the end of episode reminiscence; I've been to a couple of LAN parties, and while fun it was a chore lugging the rig around to say nothing of the repeated breakdown and setup. Regarding "Catan", an experienced game group invited me to a game in the mid-2010s; It was interesting to me, but didn't grab my imagination. I'll keep an open mind should another play opportunity arise, but this is one classic title I may not need for my collection. Thanks for the episode!

    My hands down my favorite game. I’ve played hundreds of games online, in person and in tournaments. It’s a shame they skipped the initial placement, which some people argue is the single biggest factor in how the game plays out. For very competitive players they could spend 5 to 10 minutes on deciding where to place their settlements. The scenario in the instructions they played is heavily in white’s favor, it’s not well balanced I’ve found. Still fun to watch them play though!

    • @j.g.9045
      @j.g.9045 Год назад

      Interesting you say that, because I played this last night as white and never built a single settlement the entire game because of really bad dice rolls.

  • @avron18381
    @avron18381 2 года назад +1

    Roll > Trade > Build was in the 'Third Edition" that I learnt about 18 years ago. Fourth or Fifth edition got rid of the requirement to finish Trading before building. The copy of Cities & Knights I learnt with around the same time specifically mentioned changing the rule about needing to finish Trading before spending cards.
    Only 40 minutes in... But it was possible to play the Soldier card before rolling. And I didn't notice if Dave mentioned you weren't able to play a Development Card on the turn it was purchased unless it was a point card giving the win.

      He did (and it is on all the player aid cards which are too small for you to read form this height!) - we also may have mentioned it in gameplay (or the chat could have been edited out) when Lincoln draws a card, but we make sure the card he plays is a previously-held Knight card right after.

      I used to live in Switzerland and like other European countries they have Ludotheques (basically boardgame libraries) where they typically hold game nights. I was a little dismayed that they didnt have Backgammon. I wasnt expecting Monopoly or Scrabble though as I know they are almost taboo nowadays. Modern boardgamers seem to really dismiss classic public domain type games. I do agree that the cult of the new is a little disappointing. Wow. But in a weird way, I understand. It's definitely one of those classic games where it's "classic"-ness kinda works against it once you've played it a bunch. It's full magic works best on new players.

    i have of course heard of Catan, but i've never played it. None of the hobbyist gamers i started playing with brought it to the meetups. And for the other folks i play with (family and coworkers) i'm the one who brings the Euros, and of it can't be soloed, i don't have it to bring. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    People think monopoly is the Machiavellian game that starts fights, but really it's Catan. I can't count how many times a game has ended with no one speaking to each other.

    • @danteshydratshirt2360
      @danteshydratshirt2360 2 года назад +1

      Ultimately Monopoly is usually played wrong which leads to it dragging out too long. I still think the "adult" version of Monopoly needs to adopt the Junior versions rule for game end where play finishes once a person goes out and money is counted. Weirdly people apply silly house rules to it rather than good ones

    • @sortius_
      @sortius_ 2 года назад +1

      @@danteshydratshirt2360 Yeh, I used to play a fair bit of Monopoly by the rules, and there's so little friction with it when you do. You tend to accept your lumps rather than fenagle a way out of debt, or what have you.
      People see Monopoly about having money, when it's about having property, so all the house rules seem to be about keeping money, or getting more. Which is why the games drag out, and people crack it. It's essentially adding a gotcha mechanic, for everyone but the active player, to the game.

      I think this is an aspect that modern gamers miss about older games, and I mean far older than Catan, is that people when they know the rules can interact more naturally and the game is almost a background to that. I used to play a LOT of whist type card games and thats definitely the case. I would argue that most modern games are too rules bloated to allow for decent real social interaction

    • @mccrispy
      @mccrispy 2 года назад +1

      @@danteshydratshirt2360 I suspect that what you describe is more likely a function of how few plays a game gets before being "shelved". Perhaps people don't get to internalise the rules quite so much in this more consumerist phase of the hobby. However, my group has played together for many years and there's definitely a level of "socialising" even with new games, so I'm not sure that your hypothesis holds at all. When it comes to a game like Arkham Horror (2e) the level of socialising in our group is off the scale - and AH is a very complex game. We've just played it a lot.

    • @davidarnott4850
      @davidarnott4850 2 года назад +2

      @@danteshydratshirt2360 I think another factor - and this is kind of surprising - is that most "modern" games have shifted from having one common board that everyone plays on to instead everyone having their own separate player board in front of them (often with some sort of central board that's mostly for bookkeeping and/or resource buying, etc). And because of this, a decent chunk of player interaction has been de facto designed out of the game. It's kind of a subtle thing, and, in fact, I didn't even notice this until Mark Johnson was talking to me about it a few months ago.

    • @danteshydratshirt2360

      @@davidarnott4850 very interesting point...though in defence of more modern gaming for socialising there are far more co-operative games than in the past

    Wow! My wife and I were just gifted Catan last month and here it is on the big stage!
    We've never played it, but I was aware of the game (oddly enough first heard about it from a TV show called Parks and Recreation).
    Looks a bit lucky and I was sad to hear all the 'take that' rules, but I liked the beginner setup and the table interaction. Looking forward to trying it out soon.
    Quick question, if you actually choose your settlements at the beginning (in the snake draft fashion Dave described), how much of the game is won or lost just in that setup? It seems really important to get the placements right.
    Anyway, thanks for playing!

    • @davidarnott4850
      @davidarnott4850 2 года назад +1

      The game can definitely be won/lost (or close to it, anyway) in the set-up phase. One way to mitigate that is to play it 3-player. You'll still want to choose wisely, but the board is less congested and allows for better zigging/zagging if/when someone else builds in such a way as to thwart your current plan.
      One of the most amazing things about this game is that despite this starting "bug," and potential bad dice rolls, and the "take that" aspects, it still manages to be the modern classic it deserves to be.

      We used the rules-recommended "even" setup which takes exactly that into account - partly to save camera time choosing. And of course I'd recommend using something like that with new players before they know the strategic implications of initial placements.

    The Settlers of Zarahemla has the extra 2 victory point achievement for greatest temple contributor. Other than that and the more limited tile placement, it's basically the same. The names were changed to appeal to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
    Another one off Cataan I have played is Settlers of America: Trails and Rails. That one was different in more than a few aspects, although the roll, collect and build is still there.
