Agreed! I love watching Dave explain a game. In fact, I've learned a lot about teaching games to other players by watching this show as well as Watch It Played.
I never thought I’d be fascinated in watching videos of people playing board games.. but here I am 😂 Dave you’re awesome at explaining games, and it always feel like you have a nice group of players, supporting each other and truly playing because you enjoy it, not overly competitive.
Agreed. Lincoln does such a great job of showing faces when people are talking, which I think is one of the best parts of the editing. But with this game, which popped so well on video, I was so enthralled trying to see what options everyone had, that every time it switched to a face I wanted to yell "NooOOooOO!" Still, great job. :)
Nikki has to stop sitting beside the only guy at the table who plays to hate draft! She always has to absorb Dave's plays. How many games would Nikki win if seating order was different! Haha. Great episode everyone.
So pleased to see this played on the channel. I missed the opportunity at Essen to play this (although I did meet Lincoln and get to sing the praises of Dragon Castle!) and despite watching several reviews I really didn’t get a good idea of how this actually plays. This is one of the BEST things about this channel, seeing the full flow of game. You’ve cost me money, but you’ve also saved me money at times 🤓
I'm glad I was able to help you see the game in action. Thanks for checking in at Essen. We took Dragon Castle home from BGG Con in hopes of playing it on the show after your and Jennifer Geske's recommendation.
After watching this, I’m buying the game tomorrow. Great demonstration. Maybe keep the camera on above on the game so we can observe all boards longer.
Recently bought the game, can't wait to try it! The mechanics seem super interesting and fun. I do wish that the scoring board was channelled and I also wish that the tile pictures on the scoring board were a little bit washed out. It's hard to distinguish from top camera angle whether it's empty or has a tile on it. It might be better in real life, but it's still a little detail that would've helped and wouldn't cost anything for the makers, really.
I just ordered Azul mini. You sacrifice the luxurious feel of the stones I guess, but because it's a travel version you can't knock anything out of position, a nice quality of life improvement, and it's much cheaper!
Having played the mini version twice I can report that the main downside of the mini version is my utter golgothan of a sister beating everyone with her shitty monsterscores. Don't play this against my sister and you're golden though. Azul mini just might be the best bang for your buck variant of the game out there right now.
A good way to remember who the start player is, is to put the first player marker next to your board when you score the negative point(s), and then put it in the center when you take your first move of the next round. Also, The one thing I don't like about the game is that every player has their own score track. I think it would be more tense if there was one scoring track only in the middle, and everyone counted their points on it. It would make it easier for players to see where they were on points and would make it more competitive. Still, wonderful game and I can't wait to play it again.
The strategy aspect is off the charts, so many possibilities, do I try to make player B take too many blue tiles? do I put two tiles in the 5 line so that I'm not stuck with them later? I need only one of those tiles not three. Nothing left to the randomness of a dice roll or card turn. This looks great and it's so smart. I think i'm going to get it. Thanks guys.
This is the best game board review/explanation video that I've ever seen. You did such a great job at explaining the rules simply and I love that y'all play an actual game to model game play. I've seen other youtubers try to mimic a 2-player game (without a second person), but they quickly get mixed up and it becomes a mess. My only critique is that I really wish you would show the board game mie during gameplay. Watching your faces as you think or make silly remarks to each other doesn't help me learn the game. Some of the cuts to the board game were so quick that I felt like I didn't get a chance to see where a tile was set or to get an idea of your strategies. Otherwise, super informative & fun video. 👍
Thanks for your note and your feedback. It is a challenge to keep everyone satisfied with board/people time on camera. This one I thought I was giving a lot of board time but I suppose not. Thanks again -Lincoln
During Lincoln’s last scoring round (44:08), he accidentally bumped his score marker and placed it back one point less. So essentially, Lincoln tied with Mike for the win...unless there was some other scoring mistake to offset that.
Is it me or Lincoln did a mistake by place those snowflake tile on a new row while still having another row with the same tile type uncompleted? Isn't this against rules? 38:46 mark
I know that you filmed this a long time ago but at the end for the gray grid game - you cannot repeat colors vertical OR horizontal - go and look at the variant play rules. it states this: "In each of the 5 vertical lines of your wall, no color may appear more than once. Also keep in mind that in each horizontal line, no color may appear more than once either." Check it out. Did you notice that after you shared this video or no? A great game and thank you for sharing your take on it.
Seems a nice mix of Sagrada and Qwerkle with its own mechanics also. Ordered it and the crystal expansion with the board tile frames. Ty ty :) Serious owie time - maxed out the penalty row :)
In fact, we should play that right now! Had me laughing Dave, especially after watching the Year in Review. Thanks for the videos. Enjoy your holidays.
I count color/row/column points at the same time as a tile is placed so that we know the real score in real time so that I can decide wether it is worth to end the game or not by completing a row ;)
Great video! but you did a mistake by explaining the variant. you are still restricted to put only one tile of each color in one row (like in the basic version), so your example with the red tiles doesn't work.
You are correct. It is like playing sudoku but you get to place all the numbers on your own, without breaking the rule of each number appearing only once per line or column. I usually explain the variant that way :)
I got this game on clearance at Walmart a month ago. I was going to save it for Christmas, but now that we are all home for awhile I opened it today. I was grateful for this video. Now if y’all would do one for gloomhaven 🤣🤣🤣
Weird cut at 22:20, watch Nikki's head. Anyways, thanks for showing this game. I wasn't quite grasping what was going on with the descriptions on other videos. Seeing this gameplay made it "click" for me.
It's a heavy mistake in the first print's rulebook. Should be like Dejan said neither vertical nor horizontal. Very tough side. Prefer the base one, but glad to have the pro one as well.
How is it a mistake in the rulebook? The variant says that all base game rules apply except as noted in the variant. And the base game rules make clear that you cannot place the same color tile in the same horizontal row more than once.
It's not a mistake, per se, but it's poorly worded. They should have left off the last sentence in the variant rules, IMO. Mike Young of Plan B games posted today (12/20) in the BGG forums that "In future editions, we made a stronger effort to make this more clear...." Fantastic game, though!
just to prove Dejan's point, the rule book says: "in each of the 5 vertical lines of your wall, no color may appear more than once. Also keep in mind that in each horizontal line, no color may appear more than once either."
At 44:38 - It's Nikki's turn to count. She moves the yellow tile forward to make a vertical row = 7 points, but she also creates a horizontal row of 2 tiles with that move at the top + 2 total 9 points. I don't see her count the horizontal row. I'm a newbie so I don't know if I'm not understanding something or if I caught an omission.
she actually would have gotten 5 points for the vertical row (she doesn't get the 7 bonus points for that row until the end) and 3 points for the horizontal row she created. - She should have had 8 points.
52:55 Start player can be quite good. Often, you really need the perfect tile, or set of tiles, and being able to grab them early is important. Also, when you get 1st pick, you also get 5th, 9th, etc. Every pick should be better than the picks of the person in the 4th seat. The only real advantage of going last is that the other three players might play sub-optimally and leave you a pile of things in the middle to grab. But that's about as likely with the 5th pick as with the 4th.
Okay I’m probably going to look really stupid for asking this. (I just bought the game) and haven’t played yet… BUT!! Wouldn’t the game basically end after 5 rounds if a player just takes the tile he needs for the top row which is (1) tile to fill in order to move to the right. Seeing how there’s 20 of each colour? Wouldn’t odds be greatly in the favour of whoever wants to do this? Or will the fact that extra tiles get pushed to the box for (X) amount of rounds prevent/lower odds of this happening?
You could probably do that, but unless you're going to win - or think you have a chance of winning - why would you force the end of the game? Sure, you might be completing a column or getting the fifth of a color at the same time, but you have to look at the bigger picture and try to end the game when you're in the lead. -WEM
I'm with Lincoln, it took me awhile to come to terms with the artistic style of the game. I'm also really anal about the tiles flopping around on the board. For me, buying the accessory set with the acrylic fitted overlays is a must. With the tiles properly managed, I was finally able to concentrate on the game and score big.
@@rippsteakface it's a kit with 4 plastic overlays that go over the gameboards. The overlays have form-fitted depressions where the tiles go keeping them neatly in place. The kit also comes kit four new boards with more challenging tile layouts. Cost about $14 bucks.
But he also didn't take a negative point at the end that he should've taken (he forgets he had a white and blue tile on the negatives), so the score ended up being exactly right.
If you have two rows with the same color example the third and four rows, And you have two ties in each, and then you grab three tiles of that color, can you put one in the space left in the third row and two in the two spaces left in the four row? Or it only put in one row and the rest go to the floor (or two in one row and the left tile in the floor)?
You can only add tiles to one row per turn so if you draw three tiles and place them in a row with only two spaces you do drop the remaining tile. Thanks for the note and for watching. -Lincoln
Yes they do, cause the -1 point comes from the fact that he was the first player to take tiles from the middle in the past round, so it's like a penalty point for being the first to do that :)
Can I take the pieces of a color and put them directly in the minus-points row even I have valid choices at the board? E.g. @42:30 Can I put these two blueflakes at the bottom row?
I'm curious about a scoring rule.. at 14:00 Dave has scored the single tile as 1 and scores the second tile as 2, but shouldn't it be 3? As 1 for horizontal + 2 for vertical?
If you have one tile by itself, it scores 1 point. If the tile has anything orthogonally adjacent, then you only score the adjacencies. So 1 for the single, and 2 because there is something adjacent. You only score horizontal + vertical if there are adjacent tiles in both directions.
At 38:50, wouldn’t Lincoln’s have to use that white and blue tile with the others in the third row instead of the single at the top? I thought you couldn’t add it to another row unless the one already was filled.
No, you can start multiple rows of the same color. This often won't be a great idea, but sometimes you'll find the right reason to do so, such as grabbing four tiles of a color from the center and putting them all in the four row instead of placing two in the half-filled five row and dropping the rest. -WEM

Zaq Ponce I think the point of their show is to show people how it’s played and explain rules. They try to avoid spoilers while teaching you how to play. A game like time stories would be absolutely ruined if you watched them play it with all story spoilers. And I get that it’s up to the viewer to watch or avoid it but what if you’re trying to learn to play and you come here to see a video of that? Which I’ve done many times. That being said, they have such a large backlog of games that it wouldn’t even be feasible for them to play those games more than once on video. And, personally, I’d rather them focus on showing a new game all the time. But that’s just my personal opinion. I get what you’re saying though. But most channels don’t do that either.
You grab tiles from the bag at random, and if you grab four of the same color, then so be it! The chance of this happening - or just getting good stuff in general - often makes the 1-point penalty for grabbing the first-player tile worth it. -WEM
It takes a certain skill set to explain the way games work. This guy has got it. Very impressive.
A Dave should be shipped with each copy of every board game available to explain the game.
Agreed! I love watching Dave explain a game. In fact, I've learned a lot about teaching games to other players by watching this show as well as Watch It Played.
I have to admit, he is good. One day, when I grow up (I'm only 42...), I wanna be as good as Dave teaching games !

We all feel that the scoring tracks are the worst. They either need to be sunken, add a board (like for Terraforming Mars) or a shared score track.
Is it me or Lincoln did a mistake by place those snowflake tile on a new row while still having another row with the same tile type uncompleted? Isn't this against rules? 38:46 mark
Nope. You CAN have more than one incomplete row of the same colour.
He had a "-1" tile (44:22), which he said he didn't have (44:37), so I'm thinking he caught it.

does the "start" player get a -1 for the last round (since they're not actually going first in the nonexistent next round)?

If you have one tile by itself, it scores 1 point. If the tile has anything orthogonally adjacent, then you only score the adjacencies. So 1 for the single, and 2 because there is something adjacent. You only score horizontal + vertical if there are adjacent tiles in both directions.

It's fun. I can easily spend 2-3 hours playing it with my family.
Dammit. I bought one because of this video. I watched three other videos and said pass, pass, pass. I watch this one . . . money spent. LOL
I have a difficult time understanding his instructions

I wish I had enough people to play board games with. Also Dave getting fucked with that -14 made me happy.
Poor dave. Getting the -14. Lol. 😅
Err - I have to ask: what was the pun with not eating the game pieces? I didn't get it. (Oops.)
Yan Hey they look like Starburst candies and like some Belgian Chocolates.
Oh - right! I guess there's a bit of that, indeed. I'll have to carry the instructions over when I get to play it! Thanks! :-)
Its a better bingo
