  • Welcome to all! Our favorite nuclear escapee refits another old sailboat, on his quest to escape both nuclear power and the rat race.
Russ is a submarine electrician and a naval officer, and a Senior Reactor Operator….but that is all now left behind. With a loosely held project plan, and a smattering of general technical and mechanical aptitudes, and a history of boat ownership and navigation as hobbies, Russ is now finishing the light-refit of a CSY 37 cruising sailboat, bound for the tropics, and is now "doing boat maintenance in exotic locations".
It is not the perfect season to sail the Gulf of Mexico, with frequent squalls and unpredictable winds....and Hurricane Grace finds Russ. Russ prepares for and rides out Hurricane Grace.

Glad the storm didn’t do any damage. It’s all I. The preparation. Your lessons learned will help for the next one. Thanks for sharing.

True. It really took all-day+ to get everything ready, and to be ready for the wind to shift to the opposite.
As with our profession, Scott, the whole time I was preparing I was thinking "it won't be that bad" and after it WASN'T that bad, I realize, "well, that's because I prepared!"

Thanks, Jim. Not the worst storm I've been in, but still a fun experience doing with a bunch of young Mexican guys blasting music all night!

And I am still thinking of the best way to have a video about "a list" of work needed...if you have any ideas, please tell me.

Your simple graphics, ukulele, along with still photos of what's on your mind will work well, in my opinion. I'd use the same graphics used to intro each episode (K.I.S.S. principle at work). Up to you on the order, but it's either listing the top 3 - 5 of your concerns first - ascending or descending order of importance. I'm not up on YT trends, but ascending from lower to higher priorities appears in most YT vids for building interest. I'd start each section with a still photo of the part (new as shown online for ordering, for example), or a photo of that concern from your boat, perhaps from the last time she was on the dry. Hoping these ideas help, but anyone who rides out a hurricane in a boat deserves cudos no matter what you do. I would bet you've hooked (or will hook) many viewers from that adventure alone!

@@josephhaley7576 Man, I do appreciate those ideas. I will get to work on that one! The next episode is already loaded and will publish in a few days, but the "work list" video is important to me.
Primarily, this is because I made a decision to work this "renovation" while I was on the move. The other choice was to sweat in Florida for two years, not going anywhere and spending myself into the poor house.
So, the "working on the boat" is absolutely part of the adventure.
      Thanks, again.

    Nice video thanks.
I know you put the lines on the winches to allow you to tighten them, but what about using the tie downs? I'd be a bit worried the forces tossing me arouind might break a winch.
Also, did you get some money back from the other marina if you paid in advance? Or did you just go back to the same slip after the storm?
How did all the other boats back on the island fair?

    • @skipjacksailing8986

The first marina on Isla M gave me my 5 "wasted" night back, for free, at a later date.
One boat drug itself aground...the rest went back into the lagoon and did alright.
The bottom there is mud, and one guy hurt his back trying to get his anchor out...but no other casualties that I know of.
