    I live in Adrigole. This is such a brilliant representation of the Cahas from the perspective of a walker. It's evident that you are at home in the hills. You are modest about your skills; this is not an easy place to walk. You had pretty good weather for it which helps! I really believe you should make more videos like this. You understand what you are doing! Wonderful video. Thank you for the mention of Bantry Gardaí. I have had to call them for an incident at Barley Lake, and they were just heroes! As were the Kerry mountain rescue. This place is wonderful, but not to be underestimated!

      Hi Nick! Thanks so much for your encouraging message 😊 It was lovely to remember this trip again, such a great place to explore - it felt really wild and remote at times, I loved it! Leaving the car anywhere overnight is always a risk and it was such a relief that the Gardaí took the time to source my number and check up on me like that. Good to hear that they were such heroes for you too - I hope that incident at Barley Lake worked out ok 🤞 You live in a beautiful part of the country!! Thanks again.

    Hi Miriam! Lovely video again! I'm currently in the Emerald Isle(as I threatened! 😂) in Co. Mayo, at Pullathomas on my vintage 1980s Dawes Galaxy mixte. Hopefully riding to Achill Island tomorrow! A great Irish hero of mine, Dervla Murphy, sadly passed away a few days ago. She first inspired me when I read 'Full tilt' back in the 1980s. I'm proud though that I was in Ireland when she passed. Take care...G

I’m off to the Galtees in Tipperary today with my tent, no cameras for me on this one. Thanks for watching my trip to Beara - a great little adventure! Enjoy the rest of your stay and may you have lots of adventures. I read a lovely article yesterday about a man’s encounter with Dervla a few years ago, an amazing woman for sure!! RIP Dervla..

    Growing up in South west England in the seventies one of my favourite tv programmes was the wonderful RTE series Hands and Patterns. I loved the episode with Danny Osbourne who I believe still lives in this area. Long after the programme was made he became famous for his sculpture of Oscar Wilde in Dublin. I now live in Austria but one day will visit this beautiful area of Ireland, thank you for making this video.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  Год назад

      Hi Ianmedium - I hope you indeed make that visit, it definitely is a special part of the country! You now find yourself in a special country living in Austria too - I've yet to visit. A long way from South West England, yet not so far of course. I don't remember a TV series called Hands and Pattens and just googled it now to see if I could spot anything to trigger a memory but unfortunately I couldn't spot any reference to it. Thank you so much for getting in touch and really nice to hear that this little video reminded you of a time in your life. Wishing you well!!

    • @ianmedium

      @@MiriamKennedy thank you, I wish I could post RUclips links in the comments but all the Hands series are to be found here on RUclips and they are wonderful. The programme was the idea of the late David Shaw-Smith and I think you would find them fascinating, if you search here Patterns Danny Osborne birds in porcelain you will find the episode or the channel snadhghus which has nearly all the Hands episodes. They focus on old crafts and ways of life in Ireland in the seventies up to the late eighties, from building a Shannon one design sailing boat to building bee skyps, Thatching, pottery, basket weaving ancient Harp making and so on.
      Even after all these years I find them fascinating!
      As for me, I left Devon in 1999, spent 16 years in the wilds of British Columbia before moving here in late 2016. I love Austria, I live in a little village twenty minutes outside of Vienna right nestled between the Vienna Woods and the Danube. It is a beautiful country with a diverse landscape and so much history. Thank you once again for these wonderful videos, Ireland is such a beautiful country.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  Год назад +1

      Thanks so much for that - I just found that episode now, shocked to see an almost naked man arising from the bed in the first 30 seconds, how risque for 70's Ireland!! I wonder was there complaints back in the day 😊 I will certainly watch that episode and see what it's like - I was born in '73 but its not a show that I remember being watched in our house. Your location in Austria sounds idyllic and obviously appreciated by you! Thanks so much for your positive message about my videos, I often feel pretty silly doing them but every now and again I feel the pull to make one but I seem to experience plenty of angst with the 'why's' of it all. So its great when I read a comment like yours and it reminds me that for some people they really do enjoy this stuff and thats a great motivator/inspiration to do another one some time if I feel the urge! 😉

    • @ianmedium

      Oh yes, your videos are a balm for the soul Miriam. I’m so glad your enjoying those videos I mentioned, hopefully out have seen a few more by now. There is another but not from the same series and I have just forgotten the name. It is about the last of a family of tin smiths and fiddle players who travels around Donegal and in each town he would be invited into people’s homes to tell stories and play the fiddle and during the day make household items out of Tin, Ahh, as I write it comes back. Search for “John Dougherty, Fiddler on the Road” here on yt, if I don’t have it right I will correct it. It was filmed I think two years before you were born. I’m ten years older than you, born in 1963 in the North East of England but grew up and lived in Devon till I left for Canada in 1999. Take care and I hope the winter months a treating you well. Here in Austria we are starting the odd weather season. Last week it was -7 and snow, today +15 and sunny!

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 года назад +2

      Shush Joe 😂 Yes - before the winter started I went shopping for a lightweight 1 person tent and settled on the Sea To Summit Alto TR1. My Hubba Hubba is still in working order and I’ll still be using it but I felt ready to try a decent 1 person tent out and save some weight and pack space. I settled on this tent due to its great head height and porch size. I’m 5’8’’ so I really like having decent head height to sit up in and this tent works great for me so far. It has its quirks and limitations but perfect for what I wanted! I’ve had it out on 3 trips now so I’m getting more used to it and it’s definitely my ‘go to tent’ when the conditions are right. It’s 1.1kg and I can also fit it inside my 45L bag instead of having to strap it outside. Thanks for your encouragement and lovely message!! Hope all is well with you! 😊

Loved the white cross and statues you passed what a thing to pop up on the trail as well as that fence you kept have to clamber over, could have done without that. Just as well you answered that missed call or there may have been a full scale mountain rescue out looking for you. Looked a tough few days Miriam but well done on making it back to the car, cheers Alan

      Thanks for watching Alan! Yes - very lucky the rain stayed away when I was hiking, it rained a little on my second night while I was in the tent and was still spitting rain in the morning but it eventually cleared (thankfully)! The cross that you spotted was along the Healy Pass which is known as one of Irelands most scenic drives, it’s a winding road that passes high in the mountains - not often I have to cross a road when out on a hike 😊 A great hike to have done - beautiful wild landscape and definitely very relieved my car was still intact when I got back. A full on search would have been a nightmare - thankfully that was avoided for sure!! 🫢 Hope all is well with you this weekend and that your holiday was a success - assuming you’re back!

    Ah Miriam, there is no stopping you! First it was talking, then it was facing your fear of heights in the Comeraghs, now you are getting lifts with complete strangers, what's next!!? Here, there is something special about getting away for more than 1 night, the pressures of life seem to fade into the background, nothing quite like it! That was some amount of walking especially when you add in all the back and forward to get the camera, but fair play to you, it really paid of with a cracker video with some lovely scenes, that sunrise was amazing! The car, what a necessary evil, I'm always left wondering if its gonna be there when I come back! Nice to know there are some nice people left in the world that think about others. Anyway, thanks again for a peak of another part of Ireland I've never had the pleasure to see :-) ATB, Gary

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 года назад +1

      😂😂😂 who knows Gary! I’m as surprised as anyone as to what I’ll end up doing - it’s as much a surprise for me…hopefully it won’t be anything too scary next anyway 😇 This was only my second time ever walking for 3 days with the tent and gear - the 1 nighters are really great and fill me up completely but there is a different quality that comes with more days out walking - the only things I needed to focus on were walking, eating, drinking and enjoying the landscape (and the cameras of course too which take up headspace!). I saw your comment on Colin’s video - like you the camera does have me in a different headspace and I can’t (or won’t) do it very often. I need plenty of camps with no camera to be able to cope with it and then I just get an urge to record a trip every now and again and I do it 🤷‍♀️ I’m glad I had it for this trip but I’ve no plans to bring the camera out again for a while…the solitude of no camera is my greatest pleasure. Thanks for watching and your message - hope all is good with you and your drone!!!! 😎

    Lovely Miriam, quite stunning scenery, nice to see places I’m completely unfamiliar with ( never traveled in Ireland) though from my home in north Devon I go touring northern Scotland in my little van for six to eight weeks (since retiring) each autumn....though I’ve been thinking for a while that I should get the ferry over to Ireland for a change... in Scotland I don’t use camp sites as I prefer quiet out the way spots... I assume it would be similar for overnight parking in Ireland, in the very rural parts.

      Hi David - sounds like you make great use of your van with trips to Scotland, definitely something I’d like to do. I don’t think I’ve ever been inside a campervan, yet for quite a few years I’ve imagined (hoped) I’ll have one at some stage - fingers crossed!! I’ve no experience with van life here in Ireland but I can’t imagine it being any different from Scotland in being able to park up in rural, remote spots. It sounds so appealing and you’d have great choice I’d imagine 😊 These mountains were beautiful to visit and this peninsula ‘Beara Peninsula’ is stunning from ground level and would be an ideal spot to tour in a van! A beautiful chronicle of your adventure again, and great personally speaking to see these terrific images of a part of the country that I am not familiar with (at least in a hillwalking sense). After a couple of years' absence -obvious reasons- I have just booked my accommodations for a trip to north Mayo and Donegal in September, so I am pretty excited about that. I’d like to suss out some more possible longer hikes to do this year now that I have a smaller tent that fits in my bag. After 6 or 7 years with my two person tent I finally took the plunge and went smaller, it’s a lighter tent but I can now fit it in my bag rather than having to strap it to the outside, just makes things a little more compact. The solitude of 3 days suited me for sure - although the camera does require my head to be engaged when I’ve decided to do a trip with the camera 🙃 I don’t really fully shut down when I have the camera so I’d like to do a few long trips with no camera also. It’s always a price I pay with the camera…not sure how it is for others, but for me it means the busy mind can still be at work. Loved it though and a nice sense of achievement to come through the whole process of planning, walking and creating the little video. Beautiful landscape to be in and just walk and walk. Wonderful that you’ve made your plans for September - you’ll be in such a great part of the country as you well know. Really nice tour. My wife and me had walked the Beara Way a few years ago and fell in love with the peninsula.
    I am from Germany so I was always unsure about going off-trail in Ireland. (Although in one hiking book there was even a tour, where they guided you cross country; so maybe it’s quite german to ask if it’s allowed or tolerated or even usual. How do you know that you not get stuck in a huge bog-field? Or is „no risk no fun“ ?-)
    Thank you for the wonderful video.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 года назад

      Hi Karsten - thanks for watching the video and I’m glad you enjoyed it! The Beara Peninsula really is a wonderful spot - you must have had a lovely trip, I hope the weather was kind to you, although even the misty rain has its own magic of course 😊 With regard to whether walking in the mountains (off trail) is tolerated - there are actually quite a few trails on our mountains so it’s quite common and tolerated with many hiking clubs across the country venturing out. I hope that answers that part of your question? My own preference is quiet places, therefore many of the places I go to mightn’t have defined trails but there are quite often tracks from other walkers or animal tracks to help guide me along. Once you can navigate with a map & compass or alternative method it really makes the wild parts of the country very accessible. I haven’t got stuck in a bog hole yet anyway, I had one small scary incident with a bog hole but I managed to free myself. It’s always a risk - and I don’t get a thrill from knowing it’s a risk to be honest, but it doesn’t hold me back. Because I tend to walk alone a lot, there are many safety risks I’m aware of from falling etc - so I just try to be conscious of that and not be too silly if I can! I don’t consider myself a very experienced hiker as I’m only doing it a few years but I suppose every time I go out I’m gaining a bit more experience with it. Some of our mountains can be very wild and remote and many others have plenty of other walkers - on this trip, I met no one else until my final hour or two of the walk…I loved that!! I’m sure Germany’s wild landscape must be spectacular - maybe some time I’ll get over there to see it 👍

      @@MiriamKennedy Thank you for the comprehensive answer. Yes, we had very fine weather on our Beara trip. // I’m quite capable of navigating with map and compass, and I will definitely give off-trail a try in our future trips to Ireland. // Compared to Ireland‘s west or even the Wicklows Germany has almost no „wild“ areas. But a beautiful hike in the uplands with some old villages is a real possibility. (Or in the backcountry of the baltic coast in Mecklenburg on the Hanseweg, from Hanse-Town to Town. It’s 1.1Kg and has decent head height and porch size which were big selling points for me. Thanks for watching and your message 👍 I met a local couple on the last mountain I reached ‘Esk Mountain’ which led on to the Beara Way, they were climbing Esk for the first time and were the only people I met…we had a lovely chat. To be honest, it’s very rare I ever meet anyone out on my trips at all. I noticed the sheep behaved differently from anywhere else I’ve been in this spot. Whenever they saw me they sprinted off as they possibly aren’t used to seeing people that often 🤷‍♀️ In other remote parts that I’ve walked in Ireland, I never noticed them being so skittish! Either that or there’s something in the water!! Thanks again for watching - a lovely place to hike and camp 😊

    Was it difficult to find suitable terrain to camp on? I have been near that area and it's really boggy. Great vid!

      Thanks David! It wasn’t difficult to be honest - I camped at Coombane on the first night and Ram’s Hill the second night. Coombane was very easy to find a spot to pitch - no problem with the terrain and it was more ‘what view did I want’…that was was greatest dilemma there! Ram’s Hill was definitely rougher and more boggy but it wasn’t too wet at all and I found a decent spot. When I first landed at Ram’s Hill I picked a spot but I didn’t settle on it straight away and had another look around to see if there was anything better, but I went back to my original spot. Maybe my standards are low 😂 Ah no, it really wasn’t a problem at all! Thanks for watching and your message 👍

    Hey miriam, great video. What distance was the hike in total? I'm interested in doing it, but I would have to cramp it into 2 days. Thanks

      Hi Steve, thanks!! It was 37km in total - I finished pretty early on the third day and started a bit later on the first day. It was a gorgeous hike - hope you go for it and I hope you get great visibility too!
