I feel like if Papa Punpun had a more prevalent role it would have ruined the story. He loved Punpun, if he was present more then the story would have been "more lighthearted". So I prefer it this way.

i disagree papa's role could have been similar to the uncle but instead of the nihilistic view of the uncle and the you reap what you sow view the dad's role could have been to actually trying to help punpun but ends up in failure even when it looks like it's working out it fails again at the end

@@aligmal5031 that makes sense seeing that, in punpun’s eyes, Papa didn’t try to contact him for the past 8 years. and when he did return, he had this carefree attitude; almost like papa never really cared for punpun.
We all knew that it wasn’t the case, but actions speak louder than words

theres one reason i cant bring myself to not like mama Punpun is cause a lot of her traits remind me of my own mother

The revelation that papa punpun tried to stop mama punpun from killing punpun and herself rather than just beating her while being drunk in the first chapter completely changed my mind on papa punpun.
Mama punpun on the other hand, was just a bitch.

This is a different take to the “tragic” take, because I don’t think that her having a child is tragic.
To the people in the comments saying that Papa Punpun was the better parent:
Punpun’s father taking out his anger on Punpun’s mother- is the most probable reason that Punpun has a fantasy with hurting women.
They both didn’t know how to be parents and lacked the self esteem to be decent humans. That’s the reason why she pretended to be Papa Punpun -to create a false image to her son, to look better. Or, the dynamic of Papa Punpun losing his job and developing anxiety and addiction due to lack of confidence and self esteem.
I feel like they didn’t include every little thing about their relationship, because it’s quite obvious that it should be insinuated from the mental instability we see in Punpun. Regardless of the back story that we know from the dad, the point is that we do not NEED to know it. He hospitalized his wife from physical abuse. Papa Punpun does not have a healthy idea of love either.
Look at it this way, Mama Punpun stayed to take care of her son despite her mental issues and conflicts and physical abuse from her baby daddy.
Was she a good parent? No.
    Was she abusive? Yes.
Did she love him? Yes, in her own way… because she probably doesn’t even understand what true love is.
We’re not supposed to take the side of either parent. They’re both emotionally immature parents with their own issues.
I’m sure that Punpun’s mother was always verbally abusive to an extent, but just remember that physical abuse is something that occurs after a pretty predictable pattern of behaviors.
He probably didn’t feel the need to hit Punpun because Punpun didn’t talk back to him, so he didn’t feel a need to use physical attacks to control him.

Alcohol is not the direct cause of domestic abuse. The abuse was caused by a shift in financial power dynamic. The threat of killing herself and Punpun was not right or in the realm of okay, but it seems a probably reaction from a mentally ill woman who is being physically abused.

Still, i have sympathy for punpun’s mom. I cried when she died. Her existential crisis reminds me of myself.

do you mean the source material, or in the video? if i said something misogynistic in the vid, first of all i apologize, and secondly, i'd love to know what it was so i can learn not to say stuff like that in the future. i don't want to spread misogyny or hate of any kind, so it would mean a lot to me if you could pinpoint what i said so i can learn to improve.

@@fukuroufetus I think they meant the way that people see mama as being worse than papa is because of misogyny. I don’t think that’s true though, we’ve just seen a lot more of mama hurting Punpun than papa
