Solanin is this perfect melancholic read that really understands the struggle of finding yourself as a young adult. Everyone is trying their best, but ultimately, no one knows what to do or where to go, and that's certainly relatable. As for getting his life back on track, I think Taneda's call to Meiko was just lip service or a way to make himself feel better, as he just couldn't take the strain of failure anymore. It literally shows him punching the throttle through a red light, most likely knowing what would happen. As for Punpun, I would actually disagree that it's edgy, because to me, it's just purely honest. So many of the characters couldn't be more relatable. Solanin depicts regular people trying to get their footing, Punpun depicts regular people that were left behind by life's uncaring whims, putting their personal issues on display. Regardless, good video, hope you're doing well, and enjoyed your take on the song at the end. It would also be cool to hear your thoughts on the other two parts of Solanin!

Thank you for this video! I've read Solanin three years ago, and it's still my favorite manga ever. Every character feels so relatable, art is simple but charming, and things like guitars, motorbikes and cigarettes are speaking right to my fooly-cooly heart.

Thank you for sharing it. I just turned 30 few days ago, I've spent my 20s being extremely lost and depressed, as well as dealing with other health issues and problems. I am trying to pursue my dreams of becoming an artist and... Solanin was a bit special to me as well. Felt personal. I don't have any answers on how to live this life, except "do your best" and "be honest with yourself". I think it's important. Honesty. If you don't want to do something, to date someone, to tolerate something... you don't have to, or at least don't lie to yourself if we're speaking about awful job or family issues.
We all are kinda lost. Kids becoming adults. I've seen dozens of adults who are dumber than me, who have NO IDEA what they are doing or what they are trying to achieve. Those who say "pffft I've figured it all out!!" are the biggest liars. It's all about passion and honesty. And doing our best no matter what

Just watched the solanin movie yesterday, I think it's better than the manga because you can actually hear the music (it also cuts the surrealist elements that I'm not a big fan of)
I prefer Solanin to Punpun because I think it has basically the same message in a much more focused form

Ive read Solanin not so long ago, ive found it bc of asian kung-fu generation's song Solanin. Ive never expected this deep of a story from a 28/9 chapter manga. Its truly beautiful and devestating, i always get emotional if i listen to the Rotti or Akfg version of the song.
Also really enjoyed your video, loved your commentary, keep up the goodwork!
I have oyasumi punpun on my manga list for a while now so I might start reading it soon.
