No spoiler review! This is one of our favourite manga ever! After looking back and letting it sit for while, I just found it so depressing, might be hard for some people but it's worth it. I might do another review including spoilers so I can go in depth with the story and characters such as 'God' because they were so interesting!
If you only watch anime, give this manga a try, it will turn you into a reader so quickly and let us know what you thought!
Alsooo if you know any manga/anime like this let us know we'll try check it and/or review it!
Aiko's telling Pun Pun she will kill him is just something I think her own abusive mother said directly to her. Probably several times. She may be the most heartbreaking monster I've ever encountered in any type of media. God, i wish PunPun had just taken her straight to the police when she told him of the abuse instead of confronting the mother!
Yes, Aiko's story is the most tragic one. Her entire life was torment and she died all alone completely forgotten by everyone. The little paper wishing "May you never forget me" makes me cry instantly when I see it.
Well said both of you. The amount of confusion and hurt I felt coming to the realization of what aiko has been thru. I even felt guilty cause at one point I really disliked her. And then these two comments further her sad tale even more. She acquired happiness and that’s all I can be thankful that she got. As for pun pun I hope he shares her story with that kid and uncle. I know uncle and him will bond over their tragic tale. Also, haruma can tell him about the truth of his father. I hope they all really shed light upon eachother and stop with the secrecy with the past. Guess there’s a lot of hope and babbling here but in some way that’s life man.
Good vibrations friends

RIP Aiko
I understand the sentiment but being “broken” isn’t a thing. “Broken” people are people with mental disorders that go untreated. The characters were horribly depressed, bipolar, traumatized, etc. They never got the help they needed.
Punpun himself is the poster child of depression. He exhibits every sign of it. Thats why me, and a lot of other people relate to him. You can have a difficult childhood and do just fine, although with difficulties.
Very interesting! I appreciate the comment!
Exactly what I was thinking
I understand what you mean... getting help is really good and everyone needs it. Thats the thing with a lot of depressed people now a days is they try to get help, they try to find people they can open up to, but sometimes they never get the answer they need or its just not enough and they still cant keep going and usually you know "end" themselves.
Thats where "broken" people have such a hard time because they have been hurt in their past, they have had the worst experiences and it ends up burdening them for the rest of their lives that it becomes a thought in the back of their minds where it constantly destroys them eating them up.
The story of Punpun is showing how "living is harder than dying" or "How the broken can never be fixed" it breaks them entirely, the person's pride, happniess, trust, and even their source of never giving up.
Ive been hurt, destroyed, betrayed, and felt like a worthless piece of shit and so has everyone but having depression is somewhat different from a person being burdened by their past and constantly reminded of those moments.I guess you can say "traumatize" but even that isnt really fitting but to call it a mental disorder is a bit of an outrageous thing to say. Being "broken" isnt necessarily a disorder its a thing and I dont know what youve been through in your life but i hope the way i word this can change your standpoint/view on the matter. but i think saying people who are untreated is a better word.
People like us or everyone in general opening up is hard because of how sad it can be and whether that person cares for what you say or not. That's where it'll never get healed but for us "living" is sometimes the only choice whether it be for others or waiting for that someone who does care enough....
In many cases there is nothing to fix, The life you enjoy is simply an impossibility for some. What joy is there to love when your love is sick? What is pleasure to someone who dose not enjoy others, let alone themselves? What is the point in prooving yourselfe when you have no one to prove it to? Why live for something you'v lost?
@@99onone50 but people always look for meaning in life but I liked what u said. But, I guess there is no true meaning in life its your job to either give it one or, well, there really is no "or" which is why its hard sometimes
I had a traumatic start in life, your understanding of what that does to you, through your interpretation of this manga, is humbling. Thank you.
@Gandalf thankyou for sharing this, it takes courage to speak on personal things, I hope you're getting back on track with life?I hope things are better

Yes, if you havnt read it. It's very fun and cheerful. Will definitely light your your spirits and show you how nice the world can be.
It is.
Punpun after being strong enought to kill his god (his bad thoughts in my opinion) and moving on with his traumas seems to be very healthy now, thank for all the development he got from all him was been through in the series. Being able to overcome trauma is a valuable award from life, good job punpun.
love this comment!
punpun didnt kill his god. His god was his negative thoughts, you dont get rid of that by stabbing yourself in the eye. He didnt overcome his trauma. In fact he was left dependent on someone who was exactly like his mother in the end. Someone who took great pleasure in keeping him beneath her. Theres some argument this was the worst possible ending for him, as living is more difficult then death.
I just done reading Goodnight Punpun yesterday. It was really great that sometimes it hits like a train or a truck. But most of the time it hits home.
I'm happy you read it man! Without spoiling it for others, did you expect that ending?
@@ANIME3 yea bro like Aku no Hana. Parallel Ending.
I’m on chapter 98 so far
I related to pun pun so much at the start my only gripe is that pun pun isn’t likeable.i know its because of his past experiences that has shaped him to become the guy he is by this point.but the mangaka obviously wants you to sympathise with him but you can’t empathise with him because he is that unlikeable.and they keep beating into our heads that his life is terrible, but like what Sachi and his uncle said,he has a lot more free will than you think.i feel like he blamed his misfortune on everyone else,to the point that you can’t Say that Punpun is kind and generous.i also feel like they should of showed his high moments in life as we to make his downfall that much more tragic.cause bashing it into our heads that life is shit all life is shit isn’t that great of a concept too keep the reader interested sometimes.
I feel like the point I’ve gotten in the series is pretty meh.
But I will keep on reading to see if it gets better again.
I’m not saying it’s not good it’s really good it’s just a few things that’s bugging me
But I relate to these characters sooo much
Btw the cult thing I’ve never found a meaning to that,I always just skipped those bits
@ben smith yesss you are right, I didn't like punpun that much as well but I could relate to him, I think you are right but I also understand the mangaka wants you to feel confused and even hate punpun at times, his development is pretty slowwww and the ending might not be for everyone but all in all it is a pretty great story and lool DEFINITELY the cult scenes I completely skippedd even though it ties in with everything at the end but this was probably the stories worst areaa for me but it was meant to be deep and meaningful as pegasus is on his journey to save the world from the mess that it is.
ANIME3 I just finished it
And holy shit my chest is hurting.
That ending for pun pun,u don’t know how he feels in the end.i don’t know what to say.
ben smith I'm happy you finished it mannn!!! I knowwww!!! it was craaazyy! How did you feel when you found out/started to find out what was going on (no spoilers if you can just in case other people see our convo)
ANIME3 I don’t know what u mean by what was going on but do u mean the stuff with Aiko?cause that all hit me hard
@ben smith yeaaah the aiko stuff lool! damnnnn, I'm happy you finished it man!
I disagree. Broken can be fixed and be happy. Only punpun can't be happy, but we all saw the ending and its not a happy nor a sad ending... it's up to us to decide :D
Good point, there's different levels of broken though and I guess so lool, appreciate the comment man :)
It's good point. Curiosly, the mangaka said that ending is the worst thing that could happen to Punpun ... because he is a person who can never get what he whish and he wished to stop existing and stop suffering, which Sachi denied that to him.
I think it should be interpreted this way: The broken can never be happy, but that doesn't mean the broken can never be fixed ( and then figure out how to be happy).

Clicked on this because I saw Inio Asano's work and I knew "dark" meant Oyasumi Pun Pun. Brilliant review, everyone should read this despite how depressing it is.
Master Khan Completely agree! It was an eye opening experience for me and I hope people can appreciate it too! What were your thoughts on PunPun?
@@ANIME3 I thought it was a masterpiece. Originally, I had read the first few pages of the scanlations and thought "wtf, this is so good." Ended up buying the entire Manga box set for £45 just based on the first 60 pages and loved it! (Thanks to that I started buying a load of physical manga copies lol) Oyasumi Pun Pun is one of the best written piece of literature I have ever read and it's a damn comic! Which is pretty insane!
Some of my other favourites from Asano are... Solanin, Subarashii Sekai and Sekai no Owari to Yoakemae.
@Master Khan hahaha niceeee!!! I agree it is incredibleeee and insane!! I still haven't read solanin would you recommend that as a next readd? and If you read Aku No Hana what were your thoughts on it? often compared with punpun
@@ANIME3 Solanin was so good and sad! It should definitely be your next read.
I haven't read Aku no Hana but I remember seeing a clip from the Anime. I'm aware of the author though and have heard it's on a similar calibre as Oyasumi Pun Pun.
Would read it but I'm reading so many things right now lol! Some of them I've nearly caught up with. I'm catching up with My Hero Academia (on Chapter 198 atm) and I've recently started reading "Miss Komi is bad at communication" (on chapter 30+? atm) AND need to get up to date on The Promised Neverlands (on Chapter 102 atm)
Alright thankyou so much, I will get on to Solanin immediately and loool yeahh! I'll need to get on to mha and I haven't heard of Miss Komi but I'll try give that a check aswell :)

It make me got depression lol
One of my favourite manga too. This, A Cruel God Reigns and Aku no Hana are my favourites.
Cristinanime omgg sameee! I don't think I've read a cruel God though, I'll get on to it asapp💕
I was literally rotting away being allways drunk and close to everyone, but after i read this anime it helped me understand the path i was taking. IAltough i am successfull with a masters degree and a nice work with a good pay, i was allways depressed. After i read this i finally found closure, talking with my ex-gf wich i was ignoring and still living the breakup we could express ourselves more. It is not a manga for weak minded ppl, and if you want to read it, you should have a nice mental state, or else you will only be more depressed. You should see it as the don'ts in life

But the whole cult story I still don’t believe was that important to the story
U still understand the end even with out it in my opinion
ooooh loolool😂Yeahh I can completely get thatt! That's a fair comment! I think it was a break from the story, some filler but I did hearr it's quite deep, like one person is trying to save the world and recruit people in his mission, the other is trying to escape it and it runs parallel but youre righhtt
ANIME3 I didn’t think of it like that

@@ANIME3 I am. I do love psychological and psychoanalytical manga and anime.
I actually read 'A silent voice' a while before it was made in a movie (bragging, I know). But, if it is worth while and I can learn something - I welcome it.
loool the humble brag! Honestly I wish i read a silent voice before it was a film, i heard the ending is better there? any truth to that? I loved the film ending though so I'm not too sure what they would leave out! I'm happy we connected, i love psychological anime and manga and things like it
I mean... Do you want me to spoil it?
But yes, in my opinion, the ending was better and clearer in the manga.
The film leaves it a bit in the open. As in 'believe what you want' which I don't think was the intention of the author. It is important to note that the 'true' ending might have implied an 'obligation' of the bully for the bullied which was dragged a bit as the ending is quite happy, but makes you think: Should all the bullied do this to the bullied? Difficult question.
AHhhh I seee, I'll read the manga very sooonn I want to see this ending!!! Thankyou so much!!!
the ones who are not broken are not happy either in the inside. because think of it, every thing is given to them. What i special is when you are ripped off of what u have and you put an effort to get your happiness back. thats how character is built

@sirblockepic mcswaggins Yesss!!! thankss for the backup man! I would want more people to read it, do you read a lot of manga yourself ?
@@ANIME3 I read less than I'd like to since I've got less and less spare time, but yeah, I read a fair bit, just finished off Berserk and starting One Punch. I'd definitely recommend this manga, it's progression from deliberately hideous characters to human looking ones, covering up completely horrific actions (shoving pebbles down the throat of the school victim on page 3 of volume 1) with innocent ideals, etc. And it's later volumes have the most accurate depiction of mental health issues I think I've ever seen. It's one hell of a ride, and it's fairly draining so you might need to take a break or two, I know I did, but I'd 100% recommend this manga to anyone who likes the darker end of SoL.
@sirblockepic mcswaggins Ahhh I see, makes sensee! and Yeaahh definitelyy agreee man!
Goodnight Punpun is the only manga that truly understands what it's like to be broken in an as equally broken world. There are a few that come close... kinda... but never as close.
I both needed this manga and needed to stay as far away from it as possible. It validates you. It understands you. But without the proper tools to get better it will only reinforce your negative way of thinking and feeling, and possibly traumatize you for life in the process.
I'm soo happy you shared this!! It's good to know that people have experienced a similar thing!! Thankyou!

Hi 👋 could you provide the link for music used in this video please?
Hey mann! I actually got it from youtube's music storage, If I find a link I will send it, or I can email the song
Good night Punpun really reminded of Aku no Hana, but the major difference is that Onedera never had anyone to engage on his dream, while Kasuga had Nakumura to challenge on his conviction.
Love this!!
SPOILER ALERT
so I read it
for me personally I have this habit of completely empathising with other people's pain, real or fictional
this is considered one of the most depressing manga of all time so Idk why but I wanted to feel it fully
and i regret ever doing so.
Because at "THAT" scene i just froze and kept reading
but as i kept reading it for a while
i started grasping the gravity of the situation and cried bit by bit
All i can say is this is a very harsh but realistic example of bad/abusive parenting
pun pun couldn't make a smarter decision thanks to his broken family not teaching him to do so and also himself for not learning from past misdeeds. But everyone around him just assumed he was fine and even after then Aiko's situation was much worse comparatively
No one not even sachi considered to reach out to him about his past failures and what to learn from them untill the inevitability
The only positive thing i can say right now for the message of this manga is that
When you're at your lowest point in life, just don't give it in, cuz There will always be a choice better than ending your life .
Good Vibrations

Damn you fixed your entire thesis in one line. "The broken can't be happy" sounds like such a toxic and unhelpfull thing to say but you literally just said "the change from broken to happy" and it all cane together. You cant be happy if you are broken, but you can cease to be broken with a lot of work.
ayy! I appreciate your comment, do you relate to being "broken"?
@@ANIME3 Not at all. I guess I just never really get how some people sink so low. And I just dont want it to be encuraged.
The broken can't be happy may be one of the most triggering things I've heard on this website but I guess that's also why this manga was so healing to me
Great review but yeah I got lost at that point haha
looool, don't you agreee? it's pretty harddd to changee? I'm glad you enjoyeddd the mangaa and it helpedd out too :)
@@ANIME3 sure but it's also something my therapist is trying to convince me otherwise at this point to keep me alive somehow haha
Idk if I should just believe in that or my guts that tell me it's not possible to change
ooohh I see :( I'm sorry to hear that man! I hope you do change and things work out for you!
I think I might read this💗💗💗💗

yesss!! and let us know your thought when it's done, it is depressing though so be careful
@@ANIME3 ok ☺
I have missing teeth on the left side like aiko and I grew up with an abusive mother. I’m afraid to read this manga since I’m already depressed enough ☺️

@@ANIME3 yeah xD I really do love the sound of it, it's definitely my type of manga ^-^
:) I'm happy to hear thatt! well when you start come back and let me know how it goes 😊
@@ANIME3 sure thing ! :)
(no spoilers as such but you're better off only reading this if you've read it all🙏)
I appreciate your views of the show and how it should be relatable regardless of ones place in life, I feel the same. However I don't think punpun and Aiko understood each other all that well actually...I think that because of the intense emotions between them they just strongly felt that they did, emotions are like fire. They can light the way or burn down a house depending on how willing we are to confront them and see the way forward...in the case of punpun and Aiko, I think they ended up letting those emotions burn fiercely until they were reduced to ash...in my humble opinion, I think Sachi was the antithesis to Aiko. Sachi and punpun were actually friends, not just "destined person's" that never truly confronted their issues with each other or themselves...Sachi and Punpun's friendship went through stages, stumbling along at times but progressing all the same. And while it was clear at some point that Sachi never truly understood him either, the difference is this: she acknowledged it and made an effort to get to truly know him through the eyes of others.
Wow, this was pretty deep. I never looked at it in that way, I always thought that they truly connected. Interesting view on this for sure!
-Good Vibrations- *Good Vulnerability*
I'm lying on the chair
why loool?
I'm into dark, psychological anime. But also epic shounen like Hxh, MHA and so on
Niceee!! :) what's one of your favourite dark anime? and If you haven't. definitely give this manga a read, i think you'll like it! even if you're not into manga i think it'll get you into it
His dad wasn't abusive his Dad only hit his wife because she was going to kill pun pun
Hmmm it's been a while since I've read it but good point
Yooo! The cult parts didnt interest me either. The only thing that intrested me about them was how they connected with Shimizu and Seki
100% with you!
Agreeing with the cult subplot. I ended up just skipping those scenes because they just seemed distractingly weird and irrelevant.
For sure!!!
@@ANIME3 hey thanks for the ♡!
I assumed the cult stuff was all a 'lost in translation' sort of thing, like it's referencing very specific cultural/historical stuff non-Japanese people just wouldn't get. But still that feels off because G.P. is otherwise so firmly universal in it's relatability.
I bought the book
@10k subscribers with no videos hell yeaaahh!!! A few things to note! at the beginning it's very slowwwww but it getsss really gooodd, second there's some religious cult scenes in it but you can skip them and still know whats happening, I hated those scenes but after that it gets goodd but it is depressinggg so be careful man!
Honestly this looks fucking boring. It’s just desperately grasping at shocking, painful or dramatic events which could happen to people in their real lives, seems like a plotless/meaningless drama grab. Nobody can ever experience happiness. Everyone experiences trauma. It’s just dramatising all the little things that people go through which tend to be the ones causing pain (death, addiction, abuse, ect.) to the point where it’s oversaturated with characters who all have individual reasons to be unhappy (duh, humanity) to the point where not a single one of them is unique, pityable or worth caring about. In real life if someone shares their main trauma with you, or one that hurt them so badly they don’t usually talk about it, it’s very dramatic and sparks a lot of interest because that’s unusual. That’s how tactful placement of backstory is successful in most media, it’s shocking and explains their character. If the whole character of every person is being hurt by a thing (yknow, like everyone else on the fucking planet) and they have no development outside of ‘this person is one of the broken ones and soon you’ll find out why they’re broken, wow’ it becomes predictable and no part of the plot or cast will be interesting or spark any emotion. Stating that life is shit for everyone in different ways doesn’t warrant a whole manga. Maybe a half-size volume of cute character summaries but how anyone actually enjoyed this as an extended story is beyond me.
I want to thank you for sharing your views and giving your reasons to why you think that way, I really appreciate it. Some people might feel that it dramatises the smaller things that people go through I get that, but it is so much more than that, the only thing I can say is to try to give it a read and see why it's not as predictable and boring as you would think I missed out a lot of deeper pages of content to not ruin the story and because it would probably get rated 'inappropriate' or mature by youtube as it can get pretty twisted.
I think for me and some people here, the life of punpun, his family, friends etc connected with us deeply. I felt like I was reliving my life through punpun by going deeper and deeper in the rabbit hole even though I've been through a dark hole and probably you have too? I've been told that this manga was eye opening and that was exactly why I wanted to make this review.
For others with a much darkerrr outlook on life in general I can understand why it would seem boring too and maybe something like solanin and nijigahara holograph will connect more.
If you do finish punpun please come back to this comment and we'll speak on it more, even if you still dislike it
Thankyou!
ANIME3 That’s fair, I’ll probably give it a read after I’ve finished my A levels
@crissy4445 goood luck with those mann!!! you'll do fine though!!
I'm one of those people that doesn't feel oyasumi punpun that much intriguing. Like you said, the author plays this 'depressing' & 'all human all broken' theme a bit too much, you can't even feel them again after volume 2-3.
Then again I've only read till vol 3 so who knows
What's the song?
I don't know :( done such a long time ago and my RUclips guy put it on but we deleted the files after

oooh hahah lool thankss brooo yeah soon man!! you finished attack on titan yet ?
Uh if i was tbh no im not on ep 3 yet bec im go secondary school which means homework sowwy
There is no such thing as being "broken" unless you are in an asylum smearing shit on the wall with no medicine being able to keep you lucid. Punpun wasn't broken, he was just damaged, and he could have found happiness if he'd made different choices. If he had gone to a psychiatrist for help with his obvious depression and antisocial tendencies and had distanced himself from the toxic people in his life, it would have been possible for him to find some sense of normality and content.
That's why i bristle when people are so quick to call themselves broken. It's a defeatist mindset.
Love your perspective, thanks for your comment! I meant damaged too!
Spoiler alert!!
I thought PunPun's face would be revealed in the end, and when it didn't, I looked it up, and I really can't describe it, it feels, weird, and unfamiliar, he also looks creepy, I know it isn't his actual face, but I would guess it's pretty close, the long hair is shown when he kills Aiko's mom, and the entire bottom half is shown when one of Sachi's drawings starts talking to PunPun, we can also guess that that was Sachi's drawing of PunPun because she's shown sleeping next to it, which would mean that the drawing talking to PunPun was just him talking to himself, he just looks so fucking creepy, I don't know why...
loooool I mean he kinda does
depression is a bitch
yeah, it is! do you suffer from it?
You sound like shotgun plays
@10k subscribers with no videos loool who is that I search it now
After reading your this and killing stalking I don't trust my boyfriend as much yeah but free a while I'm fine. So
lool awwww :(( Did you enjoy themm?
Yeah their really good
(don't read this if you haven't read it. Minor spoiler)
I must say, I thought the title would be more of a clickbait title leading to a not so obvious conclusion other than that the broken can never be happy....that said. I disagree with the conclusion that the broken can never be happy. Imo oyasumi punpun highlights that brokenness exists in us all, in various shapes and forms and for various reasons or circumstances, some within our control and some outside of it. So there are no broken people and unbroken people really, just human beings all with our own cracks to fill. I also don't think that happiness can only be found after completely being sufficient on one's own. I think that goes against our interdependent nature as humans. I believe more in a healthy balance between self sufficiency and interdependence. Heck, take Punpun for example...if there's a character that told himself many times over that he'd be 'fine' on his own or that he 'didn't want to be a bother to others,' it was him. How different would the story have been if he just leaned on or sought help from those that genuinely cared for him a bit more, because imperfect though they were, we readers can testify that there were characters that cared about him enough to go out of their way for him in a genuine way (I COMPLETELY EXCLUDE HIS UNCLE'S GIRLFRIEND FROM THE LIST OF SUCH CHARACTERS, IF YOU'VE READ IT YOU KNOW WHY, I THINK WHAT SHE DID GREATLY WORSENED ALOT OF THE SUFFERING PUNPUN HAD TO GO THROUGH...).
Great comment, thank you!!
The thumbnail reminds me of gorillaz
yeaaah loool that is truee

Beserk is dopeeee broo, can't compare this to beserk though
OMG....PUMPUM lol
LOOOL PUN PUN
Started reading it. It's shit.
daaaaamnnn, how far in are you? :( and do you like psychological, drama, coming of age material?
@@ANIME3 I may have had my impression fast. I'm on chapter 4. It's so slow. Really random. The fake character detached me from any feeling for him.
Find it hard to get into
Yeaahh it's too early in, it's a veryyyy slow build but I thought it was worth it! if you're finding it really hard, you might need to leave it, it'll be like this for a while but of course more interestingg
It's my favorite manga ever but the first 10 chapters sure do look goofy.
If you're not an existential or depressed person then it might not be for you. If you prefer action over things like philosophy and "the meaning of life" then it might not be for you.
I dont read much manga but I'll be sure to put this on my bucket list on mangas to read
Imsoong Rai :) niceee, happy to read that man! It starts slow but it's a masterpiece, come back to this and let me know how you find it when you start
