- Classic Game Room HD reviews MILITARY MADNESS NECTARIS for XBLA, Xbox Live Arcade. Also available for PS3 on Playstation Network. This is a turn-based strategy game like a game of chess with little tanks and space planes and stuff. This TBS video game (turn based strategy) may appeal to those who like strict, strategy based, turnbased gaming rather than building and attacking on the fly like you would do in a real time strategy game (like Command and Conquer or Herzog Zwei).
Late to the party but I loved the original on TG16. Played the demo yeeeaaarrrsss ago and it felt so freaking slow compared to the original. I think you can turn off the fancy battle scenes which helps. I also recall it felt like the chance of "luck" felt lower (in the original there was a slim chance a battle would be way different than expected, and you were never sure how many units would go bye bye).
Maybe someone mentioned already..not gonna read all 184 comments to check, but the best version of this has to be on PCEngine and TG16, at least for me. Being "Classic Game Room" I'm a bit surprised no mention was made of these. The DOS version is pretty slick too. Nice review though, thanks CGR.

Really wish they'd remake Herzog Zewi for DLC.. or even Masters of Orion 2.. probably my fav titles in the strategy departments.
Jochem1996, This game is a remake of the US classic Military Madness that came out around 1990. It was the 'original' that I believe advanced wars was based on. Not busting on AW, I was totally addicted to Military Madness and AW was one of two games ever to be a true successor. The other was the Battle Isle series by Blue Byte software.

Yeah, Valkyria Chronicles ist a great strategy title for the PS3. I loved it!
This is actually a remake of an old strategy game on the Turbografx-16. Speaking of which, Mark should go ahead and get himself one so he can review the original, and all the other great TG-16 games out there.
Well, "Advance" Wars did get it's start on the Famicom as "Famicom" Wars.... but I don't know if it came before Military Madness or not. All I know is, if you wanted console strategy in 1989 in the US, you had this on TG16 or Herzog Zwei on Genesis, and that was just fine!
Oh yeah, tons of great games but the one that sticks out the most is Blazing Lazers, the SHUMP fan in him would love it!
also you can shoot up with seekers,hawkeyes,rabbits,lynx,charlies and kilroys can shoot up...Factories once they are taken over you can use them to rebuild your damaged units. Just put them in the factory and take them out on your next turn.
I'd like to see you play the original one on the TurboGraphx16 sometime :)

"Nectaris" is Latin for nectar, and "mare" is Latin for sea. There are several lunar seas (large, flat basaltic regions on the lunar surface that early astronomers mistook for actual bodies of water), and there is a region known as "Mare Nectaris". "The Sea of Nectar".
Me too bro.. must have been the vertically mounted monitors back in the arcade that first caught my eye.. there's just something about the soundtracks on those games, the beauty of the bullets flying past in shades of pastel, and the uberpwn bomb that wiped everyone off the screen.. something every good SHUMP has. :)
Yep, strongly reminds me of the Advance Wars series. This looks like it could be fun, but I'd have to see if it were as well-balanced as Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is.
I actually tried out the demo version for this, because I always wanted to play a Miltary Madness game since I first heard about the Turbografx 16 in general. Unfortunately, even though I'm a fan of turn-based strategy titles, I just couldn't get into it. Perhaps I'll try to give it another chance at some point.
Yes, this would be a turn based... *pause* *wait for it* ...strategy. And I always wondered what a run-on sentence would sound like when read. After watching this video, I feel complete.
You would probably enjoy Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3 a lot, Mark.

Mark, Have you ever tried the "Advance Wars" games? I think you will really like it ;D
Air Zonk and Legendary are also great titles for that machine.
@kledder2 sid meier's civilization is always fun, plus you can pick up the older games dirt cheap nowadays

Oh yeah, I have this game on the Turbografx-16. Hawkeyes are great for taking down the Hunters.
starsoldier1 Don't forget using Falcons and Seekers to mop up the remaining Hunters. :)
Be aggressive and make Hunter killing your top priority - set Hunter traps - surround and exterminate!

@gameboyredpee I like advance wars too, but I like military madness MUCH, much more. I feel it was more complex, and brain stimulating.

This is turn based.
It's a shame the units don't have much character to them.
If they were more inspired in design I might have given this a look.

I've barely played ANY of the games on TG16, but I played that game JUST ONCE and remember it as a favorite to this day, I just remember an amazing array of power-ups....
1942-1943 (I Don't think they did a version for tg16 though) was another good one, I always preferred the top down scrollers...
"soldiers that capture bases" nad the battles...this is advance wars with 3d graphics!

This reminds me of advanced wars, but I hadn't played any game like advanced wars before, so eh. Also speaking of that, you need to go all out in damaging the plane so it doesn't retreat, you have to kill it quickly in one turn.

boy i've played alot of this game on tg16...I still dig it out once or twice a yr to play. I like the turbo version better...than this one.
You have to kill the hunters w your falcons and anti air first! Use Charlie’s for bait because hunters first target is Charlie and anyone else who can capture of base

You missing the point of the whole game. It was always since Psone about learning tactics and winning against a lot stronger enemy, not about building hundreds of tanks and steam rolling enemy. Its a fantastic Turn based game which makes you learn and use brain.

What? No. SC is clearly better than Red Alert. It's still played in tournaments today. Red Alert is GREAT, but it's not a competitively viable game.
It's like how Street Fighter 2 has survived for so long in the tournament scene because of its impeccable balance.

Gee Mark, what do you expect? This is based on a game thats nearly 20 years old. The single player campaign is virtually unchanged. You are slamming a game for lack of innovation that is a rerelease, and not a reboot.

This game is just a graphics update on the old game that came out in early nineties. The people who have been playing it all along will love this game, it's not for the new age gamer. Personally I still like the ps1 version better.
Yeah, ya gotta look out for those Hawks. They'll get ya! Unless, of course, you know how to defend yourself against them, in which case you'll probably be fine. It is a challenging game. Military Madness. Not for the faint of heart.
