- Part 1 of 2. Classic Game Room HD reviews DIRT 2 for Playstation 3 PS3, also on Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Wii, PC and Sony PSP. Not on Vectrex. Boo! The sequel to the excellent Dirt 1 has awesome driving gameplay combined with all new courses and rally races. Compete in extreme X-Games style competitions, jump dune buggies and crash trucks. While CGR prefers the straight forward, Colin McRae Rally style racing from years past, Dirt 2 packs loads of gameplay into one video game. This CGR review of Dirt 2 has gameplay from Codemasters' Dirt 2 showing game play from the PS3 Dirt 2 driving game in action. Numerous cars including the Subaru Impreza and Nissan 350 Z are available. Tracks are based in locations all around the world like Croatia, Utah and Morocco., China and Morocco.
DiRT 2, The greatest game in the universe, beter than all it's sequels, for one reason:
No assists! Easy to learn but hard to master with zero assists to put on!
Played this on 360, just bought a disc for PC. Dirt 2 is a proven masterpiece.
I agree fuck energy drinks. If I wanted energy I'd just do mountains of cocaine like a respectable person.

The girl talking your ear off is, to my understanding, just how the WRC works. There's a driver and then there's someone on the team reading the driver a generalized terrain description.
Anyway, 5 stars. I'll probably give this one a rent soon.

and the online racing is as addictive

Dirt2 is the best rally SIM I've ever played....idk what happened to the dirt games after dirt2 and dirt3 they really messed up with dirt Rally, Rally 2.0 and dirt 4..dirt 4 was cool when the steering wheel turns more than once and you see the driver's hand catch be the wheel with the other hand but DIRT2 AND DIRT 3 WAS THE BEST..I prefer Dirt 2 tho I'm the king of that game rally racing or Drifting..I'm the best and will challenge anyone in that game all day everyday..My Skills are BOSS Level and Realistic

this looks good, i really have to get back in to racing games, im expecting great things from modnation racers, but i also need a more realistic racer on my shelf like this or nfs shift..
I don't usually like racing games but this one is awesome..I only play from the first person view too..much more atmospheric.

Good game by the way (Very nice GFX, fluid controls), but I also prefer the older ColinMcRae's (Which is why I bought Forza 3 and PGR4 instead)

I agree these "super look-at-me xtreme action" menus are pointless. A menu is a menu not an art exhibit or an MTV show. Honestly the designers had too much time on their hands.
@norsef The GT5 menus aren't that "xtreme". They're over-designed, yes but they don't shake or overwhelm you with energy drink fonts or colors.

it depends. if you prefer rally more than everything else,then i'd go with dirt 1 or 3,but,if you like X games and circuit races,dirt 2
Nice review, and the game looks fun, but there are things that look annoying, especially to someone like me who has been watching the WRC since 1995. This is very much aimed at [North] Americans, which yields mixed results.
This review reminds me of the FIASCO that was the rally event at the last X-Games. Oh man was that bad! It was like some of those old WCW or TNA matches where they made them so complicated, nobody remembered the rules and everything got messed up! Re-tool it, Travis...
Just don't even question that PC's can run higher resolution and greater detail than consoles. Could the Xbox 360 run Crysis when they both just came out? No. Could the PS3? No. Don't even talk about the Wii in my presence. Crysis 2 will be made for the consoles with a refined Cry Engine 3 do you don't have to spend an extra £200 getting a decent extra to run it. Ahh, I didn't have to do that for the PC either...Dell XPS.
The game certainly needs more rally events I felt, but at least when you play online you can use the normal rally cars on any track in unranked games so you get the 'trailblazer' courses for rally cars or if you're insane you can run the stupid fast trailblazer cars on the Croatia rally tracks.
I tried this game on a G25 racing wheel as well and it's pretty fun on that as well.

I don't see any similarities to Shift at all though. The whole rally festival, "energy drink", camera shaking, lens distortion, bright colours thing is very unique and doesn't in any way remind me of Shift :P
DIRT 2 has been revamped on PC, it is the first game to use Direct X 11 and has better lighting, tessellation etc. Looks stunning :)
I'd put this game on my faves of all time, love it, but i agree, i want to see a return to traditional Colin McRae Rally games!!!! 5/5
Well it is not a generation thing. i stopped playing becouse of the ffing menus.... I just want to blast trough it wich i cant do in this game... So annoying. I just keep going back to live for speed. You should try that. GT5 is not as realistic as LFS. But you NEED a force feedback wheel.
I totally agree. I hate the "energy drink" trend that's been going around. X-Games styling, graffiti font, etc...I only want this game for the graphics and rally aspect, and only cus it's a Colin McCrae (R.I.P.) game...but those explosions on the track look like a 12 year old made this game.
The WRC (World Rally Championship) is going to be in GT5, but knowing Gran Turismo, they'll only have like 3 or 4 tracks (not Rally Stages) and race agaist other cars, not Time Trailing...so I guess this is our best hope for an actual Rally Style santioned racing.
Defiantly agree about there being not enough classic style rally games while everything tries to be about 'extreme' racing type stuff, was it Motorstorm that kicked off this thread? As much as I've liked a lot of the racing games this gen we need more variety of styles and scenery.

I have NEVER had a slowdown??? I have it on the 360, and I have it installed on the harddrive, maybe that's why I have no slowdown, because it loads from the harddrive! :-)

All these racing games pretty much looks all the same to me. Except that RC Car racing game for the PS3 arcade. *Yawn* Boring. You gotta review racing games that are "out side the box" for more variety of reviews.

Depends. DiRT 1 had a bigger variety of race types, but DiRT 2 was more fulfilling in terms of fun. DiRT 3 I guess would be a combination of the two so thats what I'd pick
Yeah, I noticed that for the DiRt games, they dumbed down even the co-pilot jargon ! Looks like the golden days of Colin McRae Rally are definitely over... :-P *sighs*

Apart from the menus, some of the cars were a bit odd for a rally racer; a Nissan 350Z? BMW Z4? Pontiac Solstice?
Why cant they just call this game "ken block dirt 2" because why call this game Colin Mcrae Dirt 2 when hes dead?

yeah i agree, maybe im too old aswell but i want a 3rd gen rally game that looks this good, but has the substance of a full WRC integration instead of all this taurine fueled X games shit. I liked dirt 1 but all that toy truck rubbish took up space that could have been used much more wisely in my opinion.
Don't worry, I feel the same way as you... I still have Colin McRae rally 2 on PS1 and I'd rather play it than this... I wouldn't mind them making this game, A lot of people like it, I just wish the still made rallying games... the last rally game I can remember is that WRC game on the PS2... haven't heard much since...

just coz your bad at the game and crash you have to restart the race then you should not be playing this game i drive in under 18 rally's and if i do something wrong i cant stop and start agen. also if you play on a hard setting you dont get flash back thing!!!

FINALLY SOMEONE INTELIGENT... YOU ARE THE MAN MARK... If they want X Games... Go create an X Games game... I have paid loads of money for this game just for the rally and it was pure bullshit. The Colin McRae franchise should stick strictly to rally like the older CMR games.

Also this game may not appeal so much to the pure collin mcrae rally fans, it will for any other who like racing games. I totally like the "nitro circus style. By far the best racing game 09. I wouldn't even dare to compare this to nfs shift. Shift doesn't stand any chance.

By the way, if you like racing games you should try Need for Madness a flash game that beats every console racing game...

CODEMASTERS...keep the cars, group B.70's, 60's and the new ones...and just bring back the same tracks and stages from DIRT(the 1st one)..just bring back all the tracks,stages and formats from dirt

this game was great like dirt 1. but like dirt 1 there wasnt enoguh rally stages in the game. people realy only critised it on that. so codemasters came to the problem for dirt 2 and put less in there!
Don't like the glitzy fireworks and cheesinees involved. Keep it realistic, not in Disneyland! Are the developers focusing the game on 8 years olds???

He had turned on the option for 'easy' navigation instructions. The other kind are selectable.
I think the corner you comented at the beginning actually is a corner you can´t cut because when you do get out of the road like you did...!
The navigation is quite good on DiRT 2.
They needed to letter the games rather than number them (Dirt, Dirt B, Dirt C, etc.) that way the 5th installment would be Dirt-E... heh heh heh... heh. Yeah, I'll shut up now ;)

@Gt4ledgend Actually its called Dirt2 coz is not a Rally game anymore. Its an offroad fun racer, and its a good game BUT sadly with Colin McRae also CMRRally died. Giev CMRR 4.0 with this graphics :/

Yes, the music is great. But it would be even greater, if you could listen to your own music off of the ps3's HDD.

the screen tearing is so apparent even in the youtube videos, which is reported a lot in the ps3 version.
i ordered it from Game Stop online because it was sold out at all the shops. cant wait for it to get here

Does Dirt 2 have faster load times then the first? That was my biggest problem with the game before.
@ultimate650 She's only there for the proper rally races, which are about 20% of the total game.
soryy, i didnt watch the whole vid, but i do recommend the pc dx 11 version which is amazing...
what if they made a racing game that you can shoot out of the car but the race would end to fast

watching in 2017, great review! love this game I've got the whole dirt series dirt 1,dirt 2,dirt 3,dirt showdown,dirt rally on the ps4 and looking forward to dirt 4 in June.

Dirt 1 = Throw it in the trashcan
Dirt 2 = a warm up for dirt 3
