- My Shimano 105 Shifter (Left ST-5600) wasn't shifting. It seemed to work fine when not connect. But when hooked up to the derailleur, it would shift to the large gear, but not back down to the small gear. I tried cleaning and lubing it, but it just wouldn't work. So I decided to take it apart and see what was wrong and if I could fix it. But I found one of the pawls was broken. I think this is a common problem with these ST--5600 shifters, Anyway, this is the video of the disassembly.

Hello there shyflirt1 relative newbie to your vids, but I think you are clear, thorough and talk it through in a methodical and sensible pace (no flashy showing off and showbiz presenters like others!) I don't think I would even have the patience to take these shifters apart! you are a brave man! Having been here (as we all have) where you think why didn't I just devote half a day to this when I haven't got the parts to fix, then we've all been there. Sometimes just best to 'bite the bullet' and replace old for new. I bet bike shops don't get this involved. Keep up the great work!!!!!

Thanks so much for posting the video. I'm having the exact same problem with my 105 shifter. I've been planning to take it apart to find out what the problem is, but as I'm pretty sure now there's a broken part inside, I will order a new one right away, and like you, keep the old one for parts.

Reminds me of some old school gunsmithing manuals with illustrations of 'smiths fabricating replacement parts from scratch using bar stock, even making springs from flat stock and wire including heat treating, just to keep an older item functioning despite the breakage of a single small part. That pawl could probably be made from scratch with a bit of metal, drill and some files. Lots of trouble but some day that may be the only alternative to resorting back to simpler downtube or bar-end lever shifters.
Same thing happened to my left ST-5600 shifter past year while starting 200-km brevet. Rode whole journey using only small sprocket.
Same thing broke on my 2 week old Diverge. LBS waiting on warranty part replacement for 6 weeks not sure when it will be in. I may upgrade based on this video and comments.

Well I still have to reassemble my rhand one and am getting 2 ideas at a time but it's ratchets and pawls and positions and paper thin washers, up way or down way clips and a spring lastly that looked to only rest against the plastic case on one side. Success and I may report.

These particular shifters are prone to breaking like this. I won't touch used ones anymore.

IIRC, this happened for a few years in that range because shimano only made a triple shifter and it was used on bikes with doubles. You can avoid breaking that pall by using what would be the middle and large ring positions for the shifter instead of the small and middle ring positions when using this shifter on a double. We started changing them to do this in the store before the bikes went out.

@@RJTheBikeGuy Yeah, Shimano never did a recall, but would warranty them within 1 year when on a new bike. They replaced the ST5600 with ST-5601 or ST-5603 for that generation. BTW, I use a 105 rear and an ultegra front on one of my bikes. I really like the shape for that gen. Larger grip for extra hand positions on long rides. BTW RJ, your channel is tops! I just discovered it

Problems with Shimano Ultegra ST-6501 9-speed shifter. Hooked up or not: When pressing the small lever (for shifting in harder gears), the big lever is moving too and the small is not shifting. If holding the big lever and pressing the small one, the small one is shifting without any mistake. Went thru WD40 and so on. What can stop the big lever from moving too? When disassembling being afraid of losing parts. And: When holding the big lever, the small lever is actually shifting well. Kind of strange. What could it be? Thank you very much for your answer.

I know some folk including myself had bad problems with corrosion on ultegra Sti shifters not good at all! Still work ok if a little rusty :/
Just had the same thing happen to my tiagra ST-4500. Looks like Shimano released the 4501 and 4503 to help with this issue.
You did what everyone is afraid to do haha. Yep thats what broke on my Dura Ace 7800 Shifter and it ate up about an inch of cable and left me ride home in 39x12! I had to fish out the cable end which was a B, then out came a piece of the pawl!!
It's nice to know that I am not the only one with this problem on the 105 shifter. Sadly, there are no parts to order, because I was hoping to fix it and put it back together.
I have seen the whole "mech assembly" for purchasing. Basically, the internals without levers and rubber. But it is quite expensive :(
Ya RJ the softest kind of welding you could do to it would be light tig welding or light electric welding
I'm suspecting this is the same thing that happened with my Sora brifter a few days ago. Chain began to dance around, I made a few adjustments and then as I was shifting it around, it stopped shifting everything altogether. Tried the degrease and lube bit and none of that even worked. Too bad these things are pretty much toast when they're done. Now it's time for new, expensive ass, road or bar end shifters.

Got it figured out. The old head was still stuck in the "guts" and I couldn't see it until I took off the nut in the front and removed the black plastic piece. Then it fell out and I got exactly 9 clicks. Now when I inserted the new cable, I can clearly see where the head seats against a stop. Ready to hit the road again this week.

Hi mate, loving your vids, keep up the good work. Just picked up a Gitane Mach 1400 with Shimano Sora st3300 brifters. Seems the tension on the right shifter (rear derailler) is a lot less than left shifter. Feels a little loose when activating the brake on the right. To me it seems like on the left, as soon as you start moving the shifter, the front derailler moves, but on the right, the rear derailler moves about half way through the movement. Hope this makes sense. Thanks.
Shimano used a grease that turns to gum over time. I've brought many of these back to life by simply immersing the shifting head in mineral spirits overnight, then shaking/blowing out the excess and relube with Tri-flo or similar. Keep the rubber hood well out of the way of contact with solvent.

I had exactly the same problem.
Can you do this to the Shimano Ulterga 6700? My old Sora 8 speed are working great and the newer more expensive ones stopped working. So I will be downgrading those for something externally routed. Vintage is best.

I had the same problem with Shimano 105 shifter some years ago. Now the spring of my Tiagra RS405 is broken. Parts with low quality, unfortunately.
I replaced my 105 twice within 5 months due to the same problem you described in this video. I would not use this 105 again.
Great video man! I have similar problem with my hydraulic 105 right one. A little different than yours, with some C-clips and things. But I am not sure I want to try, it feels like I will end up with the same conclusion. But on the other hand, nothing too lose except precious time.

@@RJTheBikeGuy Thanks, but I noticed it was really simple. It was the return spring for the big lever. Big lever didn't return well and thus blocked the small lever from working. I put the return spring back in location and now it's like new again :)

I have the Tiagra 4600 which looks to have trickled down from the 105, almost identical to this and it has the "annoying Shimano rattle/buzz"....This happened on my "el cheapo" Tourney STI and was simply a case of removing the front parts and there's a (god knows what it does) loose washer in there that needed a dollop of grease and it cured that- it's the same(but different!) bit where you took that 8mm nut off the front with it's retaining clip? But now I know this can't be the cause as it's a nut and tight so will keep trying.... Tactical grease and maybe some foam inside the guts....

Exact same part broken on my Tiagra shifter (4500) which I recently disassembled. So annoying that the whole thing isn't usable because of one little thingy..
I have the same 105 shifter (ST-5600) but have a problem with the right one. The rear derailleur cable snapped off at the head inside the shifter. Either the old head is still in there and I can't see it or it fell out on its own. It's pretty straight forward inserting the new cable from the right side (when on the bike) and the head comes to a positive stop inside the mechanism. I routed the cable to the rear but when trying to adjust the derailleur, I'm only getting about 3 clicks instead of about 9. I'm guessing the old head is still in there or else something is broken inside. I'm reluctant to take it apart just yet. Any one have an up close photo of the right shifter showing the "guts" where the cable is inserted?
I have this problem, but the other way; I can't shift up. No clicking going up, although if I hit it whilst holding it in, it'll work.
Hi I have Shimano Sora and the front shifter doesn't ship down properly. There are 3 front gears but when I'm on the lowest front gear and shift down, there is a TAK sound but nothing happens! The shifter sounds like it has four gears but it doesn't! Why is this happening? Thanks
Interesting yes. A lot of parts to make those things work. How can you tell that part is a low quality metal?
Just how the break looked. It looked like it was made of pot metal. It might be a better quality metal.
This is the nearest to a how-to video so far, for this era unit which is like my Dura Ace ST-7800. I am only going to remove the lever and covers to spray clean, lube w/ plastic safe stuff. I'm curious as to whether one can simply cut or pull off the electronics that will never be used, or if that flat cable strip actually provides some extra mechanical purpose like retaining the area the broken piece was in?

Hi, have you got an idea what the purpose is of the white flat cable in the shifter? I also found this in a Shimano Sora and thought it was a plastic string that was stuck in it. I have the exact same shifter (an 7speed in stead of 8 speed) with the string removed and it works perfectly.
+semarq It's an electronic cable. There is a space on the side of the shifter where a cable can be plugged in to go to a Shimano flightdeck computer.

I don't know the problem you are having, but parts are not commonly available for these old shifters. Maybe on ebay.
S Word, the right shifters generally shift with less movement than the left shifters.
Like the RJ and Pablo, my ST-7803 Dura Ace left shifter had an identical failure. Same pawl was broken in the same place. From may take, I'd say this is a general design / manufacturing failure. i.e. Shimano engineers not sizing the part correctly for the intended use / load or the metal being poor quality. Unfortunately, in this case, while I'm the original owner, I'm well past warrantee. It's a real shame. Not being able to replace this part (one that apparently regularly fails) now forces me to toss the whole shifter - a very expensive one at that. I expected much more life from components that are billed as high end. Note, this also answers Pablo's question whether the problem could be avoided on a more expensive shifter. This was top of the line. Evidence shows it's an issue across the products. Shimano, a class act would be to step up, acknowledge the issue, and help people replace these components (and/or provide the parts for those of us not afraid to make the fix). As many have stated, the complexity of these devices has gotten out of hand. The friction shifters on my older 40 year old touring bike still work great. Heavy sigh. I should also add - great video RJ! Gave me the confidence to open the shifter up to see if it was repairable. Your whole line of videos is top notch and super helpful. If you found a source for the part please let me know.

Have you verified it's broken? This specific shifter is very prone to breaking. Most are not nearly so. Often cleaning a lubing will fix them: ruclips.net/video/tFmqV4klzaY/видео.html

Just had my St-5600 do the same thing yesterday. Too bad you can't rebuild. Did find a used left hand in Ebay however, so not to painful, just seems like a waste as mine was like new.
my left ST 5800 brake lever suddenly jammed, it can't be pulled at all.. but the shifer paddle still works fine.. tried washing the inner with WD40 but still won't budge.. any insights?
Sorry, not sure what the issue is. Could be something broke, or jammed or something else.

This project from the OP is probably done, but for anyone considering this - just note the front shifter can actually get jammed in that 3rd "invisible" chain ring if you shift into it by accident (on a 2 ring system). I have a Tiagra LH shifter that I would accidentally shift into 3rd gear - tried to tune it out with the limiting screws, but never could entirely prevent that last shift. Things got a whole lot worse when, during the tuning and shifting in and out of this "3rd gear", the shifter finally jammed and wouldn't shift out of this invisible gear. I suspect I broke the shifter as my front gear is now permanently stuck on the smaller chain ring. This has been documented elsewhere too.... :(

It's not small to weld... if one is a licenced TIG welder (like me). With a footswitch and low amperage it will be fairly easy.

Nope. I am pretty sure you can't get the part. They are toast. I won't buy these particulat shifters anymore.
I have a broken 105 10-speed left shifter and I would like to “gut” it and remove the shifter and just use it as a brake lever for my 1x10 system. Anyone know how to do this? This video is a great start, but would like to take it further. Apparently this is easy on a SRAM shifter. Thanks in advance.

I don't sell parts. 5600 shifters are 10 speed, not 9 speed. And the the left shifter is junk. Avoid them. The clamp are probably the same as other similar shifters.

@@sleeks9939 As pointed out in this video, the 5600 left shifter is prone to breaking. I personally won't buy 5600s anyone. The left shifter will be broken, or will break. I used some 5600s for a 1x10 bike where I didn't care that the left shifter wouldn't shift.
I was able to fix this on my shifter.

These things are like a clockwork, if it breaks you arent going to fix it yourself without machining some really small and specific part. And they are all being made with plastic and cheap thin aloy metals that wont resist anything
i paused this a 48 seconds in and my guess it the little spring that releases the pawls is broken. That was the problem with mine.
I dissasembled mine and you´re wright.
Did you made a sping or fit one close enough?
If parts in these break. The shifter is generally toast.

these things have a built in shelf life they are meant to break so you have to buy a new one.

I came to this video from a thread of issues with the Shimano 4700 left shifter... So either it will be yet another faulty shifter to return, or it needs TONS of tension. Either way, they suck. And because I had bought a new cassette and rear derailleur, i found out I also needed the new shifters, as the 4700 set uses a different pull ratio that the previous ones!!! So rdiculous. I guess SRAM will get my business from now on.
The shifters need to match the cassette. So if you have a 10 speed cassette, you need 10 speed shifters. 9 speed cassette, 9 speed shifters. Generally, you will need a Shimano SIS derailleur that will reach all the cogs. So it doesn't need to specifically match the other stuff. Usually close is good.
Man you reply fast LOL. It didn't start planned out this way, but now I have the whole group set. So compatibility is not supposed to be an issue. From what I've read, either the shifter came faulty and needs to be changed (hello quality) or it needs all the tricks in the book to make sure the cable tension is very high, as that precious little baby needs it... Why is it so complicated with Shimano? From all accounts, SRAM is taking over more and more of their business because of such issues
Actually I find Shimano pretty straight forward. Some of the newer shifters are poorly designed, like this 5600.
I got this shimano 105, I changed the cable, and now when I shift down it goes for 3 or 4 gears, I click to shit lever it clicks once, but when I release it, it clicks again and drops 3 gears at once.

Shimano has done no one a favor by creating such over-engineered, vulnerable, and often absurdly expensive contraptions. If you ever studied science you were probably introduced to the "Law of Parsimony" which states that the best explanation for any phenomenon is the simplest one. I think there's a parallel to bicycling components: the simplest mechanisms for getting a job done are ALWAYS to be preferred to more complex ones. A complicated, vulnerable, failure-prone method of shifting gears may make Shimano happy, but that method is certainly not in the best interest of bicyclists!

I have seen this issue a lot on the left st-5600 shifter. It looks like it was a design flaw with a part prone to failure.

Hi RJ awesome video! I've recently picked up a bike with a set of ultegra 6600 shifters. The left was not working at all and the right was half working (didn't always catch when shifting). I tried flushing them and this worked fine for the left shifter but in cleaning and flushing the right I found that it now catches nicely but does not click (aka complete the shift). The right shifter will only shift if i put cable tension, kind of the opposite of what you see in this video. Have you seen this before? Since the rear derailleur kind of keeps it under tension, it will "work" but it would be nice to have it running perfectly. Thank you for your help!

Yes, the front shifter was broken. Without getting into too many details, it seems a piece was not being raised high enough to disengage the gear. I ended up fixing these with a washer that I cut up and bent to shape and jb welded it on. It has worked wonderfully for the past 9 months or so!
We all want as many details, there seems to be 3 unique problems and my 5600 set are both having different left and right issues

105 is 3rd tier gruppo. This is unacceptable. Seems all of the new stuff is engineering plastic (garbage). Good video however

It was used to plug a special cockpit computer that would also monitor what gears you are in as well as speed, etc.

They suck and are overpriced.. I'm using bar end shifters with solid single speed trp rrl levers these days on my touring bikes not only they look good they last forever and no servicing costs single speed levers are a lot cheaper. I'm using rohloff but would be happy with bar end shifters if running 10 or 9 speed 11 sucks when touring on longevity
This specific model sucks. Most of them are better.
