This game will always have a spot on my heart. I created 5 characters just to farm a level 35 blue set and go to abyss farming mobs for days. Then buy the 30 pvp set using AP then go rifting killing asmodians. Miss those old days. Elyos for life. I still remember those half second lags when an asmo is around lurking.

For me its just nostalgia bias, I have childhood friends who always played WoW and they feel the same way about WoW as me about Aion tbh. I think it's a mix of nostalgia, age and corporatization of gaming over the years. All the shit that came after Aion like Tera, BnS, Black Desert had free aim combat which is just bad game design for MMO in my opinion. After that came the mobile gaming boom which leaked it's disgusting marketing tactics over to MMO and since then everything is p2w so it's hopeless. Best options are FFXIV and WoW classic but it's just very demotivating that I have to learn decades of content because I'm late. I really envy people who grew up with FFXIV and still play to this day, they are basically living the life that I wanted to originally haha

After 11 years of playing Aion in all regions including Korea, NA and EU I can confirm that you have done a very good review of this game and that you have describe on accurate way situation regarding Aion on start of 2023. Its important to say that Aion Retail servers (Aion Live) do not represent Aion any more nowadays in 2023 because Aion Classic was released in Korea with a huge success and Aion Classic EU release is coming in March of 2023, so that version of Aion is actually real Aion now in 2023 which should be reviewed. Aion Classic is amazing game comparing to Aion Live because P2W is not that much hard core, game is more simple and gameplay itself feels slower but better overall so that should be main focus for anyone who is revisiting or trying to play Aion for first time in 2023. Aion Classic in NA was released about one year ago and have failed badly, but not because of game, only because of lack of marketing before release and bugs. Aion Classic in Korea have currently nine servers up and servers are full with Aion on position number 9 on overall ranking list of games in Korea, which is a huge success but again, not because of Aion Live servers which are dead, but because of Aion Classic servers. Overall this was actually very good review since you are not playing Aion every day, but you have manage anyway to notice most important things, so good work! Thank you for review!

You know, I watched this video yesterday, slept and decided to come back to tell you all my journey with this game. This game holds a VERY special part of my heart, not only that but the PVP hands down rivaled any other MMORPG on the market today (even better then WOW).
I started this game when it first released and played for several years, I actually met someone THROUGH this game, and was with them for the better portion of a decade. Not only that, but I remember those humble beginnings as stated by LazyPeon, starting as a complete newbie and not knowing a thing, and by the end of my time having literal several sets of officer armor (that you could only obtain by being top ranked in PVP) that could combat for any situation - a magic resist set, a attack/crit set, etc, etc. all grinded to the top.
Additionally, I played as an Asmodian, funny enough the developer PLAYED EYLOS and FAVORED EYLOS. Alot of people didn't know that at the time, but if you compared the skills between one class during this game's heyday and looked at each faction's classes: asmo vs. elyos, elyos's was clearly better, even if only by a small fraction.
I remember playing as an Asmodian templar, literally the SLOWEST leveling class, but I can tell you folks, patience does pay out, because I slapped at the end game. I remember taking a horde after horde of elyos out by myself; I remember one time having only 3 of my clan mates with me and being able to take out an ENTIRE ELYOS guild of 200+ with just the 3 of us. I reached the pinnacle of gameplay with templar and it showed because people feared me when they saw my name because I was so good at being able to swap from sword + shield, throwing out my abilities and then swapping to my great sword to break the enemy on the ground after I power bomb'd them (yes templar has a power bomb and it is epic) also being adept at switching armor sets based on the types of pvp I'd have as well!
I do hope some developer re-creates something like this game, because nothing has ever matched this gem ever and if you were in the pinnacle of when this game was fantastic it was glorious, I feel bad for those who missed out on that time because it was just brilliant in every sense of the word
Anyway, I could rant on and on, but that's my tell, hope you all enjoyed it :)

I was near one of the starting areas and, well this was a while back so I can't remember if it was a duel or being attacked by an Asmodian, but the fight took to the air.
I was playing a Spirit Master and they were some melee type.
Once high enough, I rooted them in the air and dived back down.
Their wings expired before the root did and they fell to their death.
And that was how I was my first PvP in Aion XD

My favorite memory was in a library of all places. The first major city had a library and I loved that the library had actual books to read.
The one that stood out to me was a story of an asmodian and elyos. The naive elyos thought she and the asmodian could be the best of friends but the asmodian kept tricking the elyos into killing herself.
Things like "That beast over there is friendly, go say hi." "This lip rouge would look great on you!" The lip rouge was poison.
I believe the last trick was telling the elyos that the sun was something important or friendly. When the elyos died she didn't revive at the obelisk this time because she had flown too far.
I want to say the asmodian felt a pang of guilt but I can't remember.

I remember playing Aion in beta and at launch and instantly falling in love with the soundtrack and the environment. The thing that took the joy out of the game for me was people making awful mutant looking characters and the abrupt change to PvP in a low level zone which was constantly being raided by high level enemies...making questing almost impossible. Every once and a while, I still revisit the soundtrack and wish the game wasn't such a disappointment.

So many great memories I have of old Aion. I met so many amazing people and to this day have never been in a static that flowed so well together. We all no lifed that game like crazy. I was in one of the few statics that could get an S rank and kill Tahabata. Had to my knowledge the first Tahabata spear on my server on my side. We also set a record for fastest instance clear for the server merge event. We managed to clear Tlabs in a couple of mins haha (farmed the keys the night before). The nostalgia I felt hearing that song again. I've been chasing that dragon ever since.

And those zones were camped 24/7 by Aion vets that knew how to make broken builds/OP group mechanics and take advantage of OG 'glitches' and such. At the SAME time, a bug was found and abused by a bunch of players resulting in HUGE amounts of Gold being piled up by a lot of ppl, breaking the Economy in the first week.

Hi Peon, glad to see you covering my favorite game!
Considering you're someone who has barely played the game and has only grasped some first impressions, I think u did a surprisingly good job with your analysis.
It is a common saying among Aion-players that retail Aion is not Aion anymore and for this exact reason more than 95% of the playerbase is nowadays playing either on classic servers or on private servers which simulate the oldschool game.
the only aspect I'd say you didn't get the chance to estimate properly was the combat system; while it might feel clunkier than some modern titles, it gets way better while you progress through the game and feels very smooth lategame in comparison to other "older" titles. The combat is actually one of the main factors that kept players playing this game up until nowadays.
    have a nice day

Started a Chanter, groked the buffer way to play this game, got invited to a massive amount of parties when playing, got PM'ed every time I logged in.
Felt it was way more fun to play as support, way better to get gear and interact with others through Ventrilo or TS, which also raised the bar for my verbal English skills.
While having tons of fun, also improved my english which is kinda great. I miss those times.

I've been saying this for years now. AION is the best MMO of all time. The only thing it needed was updated graphics and modernized combat system. No other mmo could compare itself to AION if it did thsoe things. The world felt real and alive compared to any MMO today. The music, the factions, the pvp, dungeons etc were all well made. Exploration was HUGE IN AION as you could take teleporters into the world of the enemy factions givign plaers that thrilling enemy territory feels. The ABYSS was insane a place where players could be doing questa dn at any given moment bump into each otehr part of diff afactions and they start to fight. EVEN the PVP music is top tier insane. They have music when you pvp someone.

I absolutely loved your narration here! I'll say this, from a player that started on closed Chinese Beta testing of this game and started playing during early release (September 2009 in the US) all the way to 2019, this game was everything to me all the way up to 2014, later the game became free to play, too many bad players and too much P2W that the game lost so many great players and the population plummeted. I will always love Aion for what it was initially and the rush you got from grinding in groups and hunting or being hunted by the opposing faction when rifts popped up on your map, the game had so much depth and also potential which was ruined by horrible game admins and just overall bad company moves. This game could still be a top tier game had they actually invested in marketing, good developers and also if they had just stuck to the lore. Anyway, thank you for making this highly entertaining and nostalgia triggering video.

Aion was my first MMO. I still have fond memories of it but to see it the way it is now is heartbreaking. I kept waiting for you to go to the Abyss and then remembered that they deleted that whole zone from the game a while back. It was the first full flying PVPVE area in the game. I really miss the old days of Aion. Also a tip for anyone wanting to play this game: When your character sits down you regain health and mana faster. If you play a caster class just sleep/bind the enemy and sit down for a couple of seconds to get mana back faster.

After looking around briefly, many players apparently weren't happy with various changes made to the game over time, so people kept leaving, especially once classic servers got opened up, until retail got to the state it's at today. Retail has a very limited player base, that would basically all be at end game, which would be why the game is trying to rush you through progression, and why he didn't really see anyone around.
The absurd thing about this to me is that if classic is still progressing, then that would almost certainly mean it will eventually get the same updates people didn't like in retail, in which case, why bother? Considering as how this is NCSoft we're talking about, even if they claim otherwise, I just can't see them trying to fix their considered mistakes, or make classic its own thing, like is being done with Old School Runescape from what I gather.
