Winter Camping in a hot tent with woodstove/diesel heater | Snow and Freezing Temps (our first time)

- We got ourselves a fishing shelter that we have converted into a hot tent. This is our very first time winter camping ever, and our first time setting up this tent. It got pretty cold -14 Celsius and very snowy. We also got a WinnerWell wood stove so we were able to cook and have a nice warm tent and fired up our brand new diesel heater. Dang! That was a serious set-up! I've only ever winter-camped alone, with what I could carry in on my back. The hot tent with real meals looked amazing, and you both obviously enjoyed yourselves. And that's really the point, isn't it?
The black stuff on the stove window is just soot, btw. You can clean it off easily. It will also cook off when the stove gets hot enough.

How did your diesel heater work? My son and I had the same ecperience last year with a similar set up and he would like to add a deisel heater to the mix.
Nice video, thank you, was surprised your woodstove wasn’t enough to heat your tent. I have a 16’ dia. X 10’ tall tent, I use a woodstove about the same size and it’s awesome but I put about an 1 1/2” dirt inside covering the bottom. Wood burns slower more even with a greater heat output. You can also use fire brick that comes in various thicknesses. You will truly feel the difference and enjoy it much more.
We agree the woodstove made it very hot in there, too hot at times. We just didn’t want to get up to put wood in the fire when sleeping so we swapped out to the diesel heater. We are looking into bio blocks which apparently last up to 6 hours in a woodstove. Is that the fire brick you are talking about? Thanks for watching :)
@@herethereadventures fire brick is actual brick lining on the inside of a stove - it protects the metal from heat, stores heat and radiates it for a longer time once the fire is low

That clicking noise is the fuel pump…the more premium models will rubber mount them and use a quieter fuel pump so that clicking won’t drive use crazy, can do some research and swap out with new pump and better install depending on how it’s installed, it sounds like it’s bolted right to the case so the sound resonates like tapping a hammer on it…also if one was to purchase a diesel heater it’s just a small low volume low psi pump so In colder weather -20 and colder strongly suggest adding an anti gel to your diesel for better fuel quality and easier on the pump

HEy everyone has to start somewhere. Nothing wrong with that! You will get this all figured out just keep at it! Looks like you had fun anyway! Keep it up! I do suggest that you look into different bags though. Your "sleep system" looks like it needs some attention. I feel like you will learn NOT to drag most of your earthly possessions with you too. But you will learn that pretty quickly! Have fun and do more of it! You will get the hanf of it!

This was our very first time winter camping in a tent so it was an adventure for sure hahahah. Our diy truck camper made things much easier and organized lol. Lol not going to lie, it was a lot of work. We are thinking of new ways now to make winter camping much easier. We only have 7 months to figure it out lol

I have two of those heaters so I now put the diesel heater inside and run the thermostat and exhaust outside
The second thing that exhaust fits right into the port for your power cord you don’t need to run it on the ground like that. I also have a monster lodge.
That’s very interesting! We will definitely have to try that! You aren’t worried the exhaust is too hot to go through the canvas? Also did you have to disconnect the muffler and reconnect to get it through the port hole? Or does it already fit? Thanks!
That is a cracking set up you have. You would need a big trailer to haul all that equipment. A bit much for just 1 night, but for more than 1 its first class.🙏

Lol!!! You are absolutely correct we are not experienced with any of our stuff lol. It was our first time using that tent, wood stove and diesel heater. That gizmo is our stove pipe oven and it’s very cool!

Great setup ! .. I have had a diesel heater for 2 years... instead of pulling your combustion air from the outside.. pull it from the inside. With the air temperature higher than freezing the heater will not have to work as hard and you will get better temps inside. After some experiments I moved the heater inside the tent... that way you can use the remote when you bring it lol. Still excellent job !
Lol!!!! When we do bring the remote we will definitely try that! That was actually the first and last time we have used the heater, but we will be using it a lot this coming winter for some winter camping. We really enjoyed ourselves with the woodstove and snow, and are looking forward to this winter. We are actually are out camping right now as we type this. Thanks for the tip, we will be trying that as soon as the colder weather hits :)
I was going to say the same thing. I have my exhaust outside but the unit inside. I can keep the fuel feed low and still have plenty of heat.

I just happened to stumble upon your video. It's great. Living here in Michigan where it does get cold, this past December I bought a 6 x 12 tent just like yours from another company. This will be my new deer hunting tent/cabin. And, I already have the diesel heater too. Up here people use them for ice fishing in freezing weather, why not use it for a portable hunting cabin? Thanks for sharing.

I search for new "camping adventures" a lot. There are plenty to pick from, as many have jumped on the band wagon. I found yours, and was attracted to the Novice, but pleasing, vibe. You have the basics of a potentially great experience! It's hard to quantify... but the feeling of "real, experimental fun" is a winner. Awesome setup basically a studio apartment in the middle of the forest. I would love to do this but I would be concerned about wild animals and would have to bring protection, a 12 gauge with slugs and my 9mm and some bear spray. I’m probably overthinking it but I’d rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
We are hoping the bears are hibernating where we are and the next worst thing is coyotes. We hear you tho, would rather not need the stuff than to not have it at all, but when In doubt just sleep with one eye open lmao

Also, that was the definition of a meal. It's a good thing I ate earlier.

I like your video but man the meat turned gray that's like terminal for me let me tell you a secret get two cast iron pants put them on the fire get them so hot they don't smoke then get your meat seasoned of course throw it in one of the pans get the secondary pan and put it on top of it so you have two pans facing up 3 minutes like that you got the best steak you ever had in your life sir I know what I'm talking about I'm from Texas

Well done! That's almost like a home away from home.. When i think of a tent i think of a place to put a sleeping bag and that's it... Not many places in Australia to do some snow camping.

Are these ⛺ waterproof and do they come with a floor?
This tent is not waterproof and does not come with a floor. It’s actually a insulated ice fishing tent. If you were to use it during rainy situations we would recommend putting a tarp over the roof as it would most definitely leak. Thanks for watching :)

Did you stake your tent down? In case of high winds
We didn’t that time, there wasn’t much wind we had to worry about and had lots of trees to block the wind. The tent also weighs over 70 lbs but we did see videos of people using it ice fishing and it just blows away, so we would def stake it down with the included ice stakes that screw into the frozen ground/ice. I don't understand this, I did this three different times with 3 different ladies. Every time after we got back they dumped me. Why, I don't know, as I let them do everything setup tent, cut the wood, start the fire and cook us meals. I had a fun time watching them and drinking my beers.

You can buy USB power packs and USB lights that last a long time. No need for that huge battery. You could have also heated that tent with the woodstove, you can put a lot of wood in it

What a set up! After all the work I hope your planning to stay at least a week! Do you experience a lot of condensation inside the tent?

When I was younger I used to winter camp in the George Washington National Forest just west of Harrisonburg VA near Reddish Knob. I camped on the snow with a sleeping bag. Back then there weren't so many conveniences available. I don't know if I heard of a 4 season tent back in those days. Putting a few warm rocks in the bag was needed on occasion.
Lol the times are changing, thank goodness! Maybe sometime we will try camping old school 😀 thanks for watching

Run the heater control into the tent
Great idea! We just got to get longer wires to run the control into the tent. The wires that came with are only 6 inches long. We do have a remote, but forgot it of course. It was our first time using it in the video.

We have the large size winnerwell stove. We do think that the medium size would work as well with that tent because the large made it very warm in there, we had to open the door of the tent a few times to cool it down…Thanks for watching!

I would probably have preferred to bring skis and a meal from a serious company that makes dried tour food rather than a whole oven!
I have been hiking in the mountains here in Scandinavia for over 40 years, but I have never baked a cake or hat with a hot oven, I have gone skiing in the winter or on my feet in the summer, up with the tent, food and then a really long and nice walk in the area. Then eat again and then sleep.
The great thing about camping is you can enjoy it in many different ways. We personally enjoy having our comforts with us, but can definitely see the simplicity of just back packing in to a spot which is something we would also like to try. Thanks for watching!

That’s true! I’m sure a lot of men would disagree with me (female half) but I do love my comforts in order to get me to go as I’m sure most women would agree hahahahha! But now that we have done it, I’m definitely open to the idea of trying it in a more basic way. We are currently working on a side by side to make it camper friendly by adding roof racks for storage for all my stuff lol! Also Scandinavia sounds awesome and we would love to visit there someday, it’s on our to do list 😊
@@herethereadventures Yes, we have different needs and many like comfort. I am an elderly woman who often goes alone in the mountains and can be gone for days. At the end of August, I'm going on a 5-7 day trip with our two dogs, they carry their own food and I have to carry on my back what I need for a little week. It's camping for me, far away from people and a life under the stars. My husband demands that the dogs walk with me as he is no longer able to walk with me due to MS.
In the winter I go skiing and can go for a week. I have several times had to dig myself into the snow when the storms come, it can be quite windy if I am high up in the mountains. That is what life is for me and I understand that it is too much for many people.
But when I'm lying in a warm sleeping bag in the tent I feel like the richest person in the world.
I will be 78 this autumn, the mountains are my source of energy.
I wish you many beautiful trips in the future and Scandinavia, especially Norway is incredibly beautiful.

Well we did forget the remote and instructions at home, but for the very first time using it, it worked out great. We kept it on a very low setting when we slept and it kept the tent reasonably warm. We will be taking it out more in future videos and will try and figure it out more lol. Thanks for watching :)

I want to start camping like this. How does one keep bear and other animals away from the food smell? Also why does the tent not have a floor.
Just bring a buddy with you and tie their shoes together, now you don’t have to out run the bear, just your buddy lol.
But not to worried about bears in the winter, we hope they are hibernating. Also the tent we used was a ice fishing tent, so it doesn’t come with a floor. But most hot tents we have seen do not come with floors also. Thanks for watching :)

That diesel hearer needs to be in the tent just run the exhaust to the outside the controls really need to be in the tent. Wood stove and that heater and there wearing jackets
We thought of that as an option but it takes more work and we we’re running out of time. We did have a co2 detector but didn’t want to think about it. Hard to sleep wondering if the co2 detector is even going to work if needed lol
Did the stove jack come with the tent or did you make it ? I have a similar Otter tent and it did not come with one
We made it. We just used the plastic window that came with it as a template. We bought a 6x4 welding blanket on amazon and cut it to fit. It is doubled up with the fabric and we used velcro to secure it to the spot where the window once was. Then we used the rest of the welding blanket as a heat shield behind the stove so it would burn through our tent. It worked great...the fabric is rated for 1000 degrees. Hope that helps :)

What do you mean by vent pipe? The tent has 2 vents built in that we left open. And we aren’t Bigfoot yet…luckily I have small feet (female half) hahahahahhaha

Hello. Your trip is amazing. I have to disassemble, assemble and maintain diesel Chinese heaters and as a result I have to state the fact that their electronics are not protected from moisture in any way. There is no moisture protection in the control panel, cable connections and control board, so it is best to "put" the device in some kind of box. Good luck 😉
