    Here's when it was -40: 32:58
    And an example of the ice flooding after drilling a hole: ruclips.net/video/vmwKSM3ayhk/видео.html
    Get a lot of questions and some are quick to accuse me of lying about the temperature (no, I never have). Temps are regularly in the -30s here and I camp year-round...it's not a green screen, it's a wood stove. If the title says -30, that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course.
    I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping:
    1) If it's so cold, why can't you see your breath? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    2) If it's so cold, why is there slush on the lake? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    3) Why aren't you melting snow for water? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    4) What is the temp inside the tent? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    5) Why winter camp at all? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    6) Why aren't you wearing snowshoes? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    7) How do you poop when it's that cold? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    8) Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide from the stove? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    9) Aren't you afraid of animals attacking you? Where's your gun? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html8
    10) How you you power your devices? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    11) Why don't you use a floor? ruclips.net/video/a_nrGUte8dM/видео.html
    Hope it helps clear some things up.

    Good trip. Those holes in the snow you found on your walk around the lake are overnight ruffed grouse roosts/beds. They bury themselves in soft snow for its insulating properties. They usually defecate before leaving their beds. That's what you found. The impressions in the snow near the holes are made by their wings at take off.

I was in a very difficult place in my life at the time. I think the most difficult in my life. Watching you exploring the wilderness in the way you do is inspiring. You approach it with such humility, and respect while showing good humour and positivity in the face of the nastiest bugs, weather, and portages the North has to offer. It gave me hope in a hopeless time in my life. It got me out there; into the wilderness again! Following in your footsteps sometimes. Sometimes finding my own way. Thank you Jon. Thank you so much. Now I am starting to post my own videos. Learning along the way. Loving it!! I still watch everything you post. I love watching you and Erin too. You're a great pair!!

    Hey Jon, another great video my friend, it's nice that you had some fish action in the tent. Those holes you saw in the snow are most likely from Grouse that come off their roost and burrow under the snow in real cold weather. The temps you had would do it for sure. I have seen this many times over the years. I even had them bust out of the snow when I walked past them, that will get the heart started . lol Another great video, take care and stay safe Brother. The still image at 6:42 is so beautiful, homey and calm. Speaking of what smells more appetising than cooking onions, id say garlic frying is a close second. Your video is a combination of some of the most pleasing things, like staying warm and cosy indoors while watching out a window where outside is raining or snowing, the cracking of wood in a campfire, the sound of hot water pouring into cocoa powder… it feels so reassuring. It’s very kind and considerate of u to handle the fish captured so gently l, and ensure it stayed in the water instead of lifting it up. ❤

    I watched a young man start reeling in a walleye when a huge pike grabbed it, the kid hauled in what he thought was 2 fish but that pike had another freshly swallowed walleye inside it when they cleaned it. He could barely contain himself... Who am I kidding, he didn't contain anything, he was doing the victory dance all night much to the chagrin of both his dad and my husband. Was a good outing.

      Also, what does the temperature stay at inside the tent in those temps?

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  Год назад +1

      Thanks Bryce! The inside temp ranges widely depending on how I use the dampers (on the door and flue) but it's doable to get it to 40C when it's -30C outside. But if it's -30 overnight and I'm trying to maximize the burn duration, I'll close the dampers most of the way to slow the burn. It's also much colder on the ground than in the top half of the tent, so it could easily be below freezing still in that scenario which is why I still need a good sleep system (I only run the stove all night at -20C or colder). Generally if I'm awake the indoor temp is probably 10-12C and if sleeping a bit below freezing

    Thanks for answering all those questions. Always wonder about powering my lights and radio. My first winter camp was a learning experience. I now sleep with my hearing aids, phone and solar radio. Since I am entering the 4th quarter of my life I believe I am going for a longer winter camp either the end of this year or the beginning of next. You and others have really educated me. So nice to be one with nature. Thanks again.

    Grouse sleep under the snow because it's a good insulator. In the morning they fly off leaving a hole in the snow, with poop at the bottom. You may have noticed the tracks and marks, where the wings hit the snow.

    As an Australian who has only once been subjected to -30c in Ottawa, more power to you. -40c is nuts.

    Is it possible for the stove to melt through the ice? Maybe if you were there for an extended amount of time? I really enjoy most of your content, you're very calculated and prepared while also appreciating the beauty of your surroundings.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  Год назад +1

      I don't think so...the water it melts acts as a buffer for the heat and then it can't melt the ice. But I had some splits under and through the legs to help it float and stay level. Thanks Aaron :)
