I'm the guitarist of Typhonian (over at Transcending Obscurity) and I always had a lot of Morbid Angel influences, but I never was able to capture the essence like that. Absolute kudos man, I'm beyond impressed. By the way: Would you be interested in contributing a guest solo one day? Would LOVE to hear your style on a future Typhonian record, we're all huge Morbid Angel fans haha

@@Imposibilitron Sad they don't do it anymore. Had some neck dive issues at first but I fixed it by moving the strap buttons. Other than that, very comfortable guitar!

Have you ever tried playing that second (final) solo of Brainstorm from Blessed are the Sick? I can't tell what the bloody Hell Trey is doing to produce that epic screech when he bends at 2:25 and I can't find a decent resolution video of him playing it. I would love to see you play that solo.
I have an idea of how to do it, that solo is a mix of whammy bar, harmonics and pick scratching on strings. Brainstorm is such an amazing song, I had planned to cover it with solos, but still haven't found the time to make it.

You can tell this is an old video cuz the edges of the underneath video are showing around the overlaid one. That means it was probably edited on a CRT where the image looked fine because the edges of the video were either covered by the moulding around the screen.
Illud isn't a perfect album by any means and the industrial songs don't get any play from me, but the death metal songs were great and Trey had possibly his best tone out of any album save for maybe formulas and gateways in my opinion.

I mean, everything sounds great to me, but actually average compared to what they've experimented before.

I was really lucky to catch them on the gates ways tour @ the LA 2 in london. Got my ticket stub signed as well. Come to think of it i saw em on illud tour as well. Both shows were great.

It's rather hard to describe Trey's work in terms of scales and modes, because his playing is very intuitive and spontaneous, without really thinking about what is actually played, but instead by feeling the energy or the vibes of the music. Something that he must have used is visualisation, where one visualises, internally, what sound one wants the amps to produce. It's also a reason why it's hard to get accurate tabs of his solos, something that I wouldn't want to do for many reasons, but I've focused on reproducing the energy more than the notes to cover these solos. As for MA playing live, no bands has ever beaten their intensity. I've seen them on many many tours, last time in 2014 because they've unfortunately been unable to come back to Europe since then, but always a special and I'd even say a mystical experience.
No. Actually each song that have the solos featured on this video have been done as whole covers before I did this compilation video of just the solos. Angel of Disease has so many solos that I wouldn't isolate them from the entire cover. And Invocation has great solos, but wasn't a song I wanted to cover in its entirety.

Yes this is actually a technique that Trey has imagined and used to record many solos on Formulas, Gateways and Heretic, the solo for Cleansed in Pestilence in particular. The fan adds a kind of dirty vibrato fx that can't be achieved by just using pedals. And as these solos are recorded with 2 amps in stereo, putting the fan in front of just one amp adds the fx on just one side. I’ve also used the fans on the tapping solo for « I »!

As much hate as illud got those song and solos were still structurally, put together very well.
I personally like Illud a lot and I think that the production on it is better than many records that got more praised.
