Depending on how you look at it. The ship was lucky on one side and unlucky on the other. Especially with the amount of hits and damage it took before it's final sinking.
Wow, if Kumano's damage control team was this good at keeping there ship afloat, they should have been transferred to one of the IJN's fleet carriers, like Shokaku, and they could have had a chance to save her from sinking during the Battle of the Philippines Sea. Had they succeeded, she would limp back to Japan for repairs, and maybe she could have joined Zuikaku in the last Japanese offensive aircraft carrier strike of WWII. If only...
It would be interesting to hear about the destroyer that blew up in the Chesapeake Bay. I wish I could remember its name. I think it was the Chesapeake Bay.
Photos of Kumano are rather difficult to come by in great quantity. Some substitutes are used and I labeled those photos in the video.
Thank you for doing what you can. 👍
Thanks for not doing the Dark Seas/Skies copout!
Understandable.
Admiral Halsey is said to have stated "If there was a Japanese ship he could feel sorry for at all, it would be the _Kumano."_
Very interesting. Kumano, unlike a number of other IJN cruisers, clearly had a good damage control team.
Beautiful ship, armed to the teeth, at first with 6 inch dp guns (15 guns) and after refit with 8 inch guns (10 guns)
Aaah. My all-time favorite sea story.
Unfailingly interesting and informative!

I'd count her as lucky simply for the relatively large number of survivors.
i'm just leaving squiggles for the algo-deities.
Solid, informative video. Strongly recommended...
