great video I will show it to the mechanic who will be replacing my steering rack. After the comments, I checked the order and whew, it's with SSL. I hope everything goes easily.
Well, I try to. It's proving to be difficult when relying on parts from reputable companies that turn out to be rubbish.. But I still think c5's are worth persevering with, they're lovely cars
I bought a so called refurbished steering rack from the same company as you and mine was absolute crap as well, no way was it a genuine recondition job, once fitted it felt worse and more worn out than the one that was removed, definitely avoid at all costs, total waste of time and money.
It dies seem to be a recurring theme with them.. Annoyingly ssl now sell racks on exchange you can fit yourself, although I still think longterm a better engineered solution is the answer, but certainly I'll never give the other lot a penny of my money again
You don't have to completely remove the subframe, it'll drop enough without disconnecting it completely to remove the rack. Assuming the studs that locate the rack haven't corroded into the subframe.
Well, if I say they are based in Wakefield, and the company name is a big cat largely found in africa and zoos, that should avoid being sued.. The only company that has a consistently excellent reputation for x7 racks is SSL also in Wakefield. They now offer racks on an exchange basis rather having to take the car to them too which is excellent.
I'm not remotely convinced the seals on the rack are lds compliant. But given the state of it.. I'm not surprised. Had little choice, my workshop is in the arse end of nowhere, and walking 40 miles home wasn't appealing. Thus far the company involved hasn't responded to the increasingly irate shitograms I've sent much less answered the phone.
Already working on it. Dad's going to machine the pinion shaft, I've got an old mate who does metal spraying who is going to chrome plate it back to size, and I'm looking at machining the pipe ports for a standard fitting I can flare on site. The rack I bought won't be staying in the car.
Bugger. What a pain in the arse.
Well played Chris with your patience and fortitude.
Fuelled entirely by hatred and anger by the end!
Hopefully a home built rack will be better than this. Actually, anything will be better than this

You'll be fine with an ssl rack, they have a well deserved excellent reputation
Thanks for the video, good teaching, mee too wouldn't have another car, ill just improve it just the same as you do.

Can i remove the subframe to remove steering rack please

You're much calmer talking here than when you got home dear....
This was rather earlier in the day of course love!
Hey, can you mention which company it was that "refurbished" this unit? Just so we can steer clear of them :/

@@adventuresinrust1644 nice one thanks for the tip 👍
@arochy93 no probs. If you're near Wakefield it's worth taking the car to ssl to be fair, they do all the misery for you, and they're very good at it
I would have sent it back, power steering fluid destroys the LDS seals!
