Oh Theo. There is so much that can be said about this. First and foremost, the Olympics are supposed to unite, not divide. Secondly, some cultural sensitivity would have been good. Finally, calling people close-minded shows close-mindedness.

People that are spewing false outrage are close minded. First of all, there was no mocking of the last supper. It was the feast of Dionysus. Some people are constantly looking for something to be offended by. In many cases it's because of their own ignorance. This is one of those times.

I haven’t seen the entire opening because I was working. It’s incredible to me how many Americans (I’m American) are disgusted. Mainly they think the Triumph of Dionysus was making a joke of The Last Supper. Greek God=Greek =Olympics- Dionysus celebration…. A lack of open mindedness. And that the woman with her head 11:10 in her hands. I don’t think they tried to understand the meaning or symbolism. Marie Antoinette at Conciergerie where she was jailed during the Revolution -lived it. The horsewoman in Silver on horseback was fascinating. The light show at The Eiffel Tower was fantastic! I was captivated by the flame being handed off en route to where it would finally end up in a cauldron. Where would it be? Notre Dame? The Louvre? Place de la Concorde? Would they go to Hotel de Ville? Amazingly, suspended by a balloon!!! France-always evocative. Art depicting life. Life depicting art. I wish I had been there! I will be there in 85 days for my sixth visit.

I have mixed feeling about the ceremony. It was so masterful and breathtaking at points that I lack the words to explain my feelings. You almost want to cry and cheer at the wonder. But for me it was too ambitious. For that reason it was just felt very fast and loud with a lot of the intent getting lost in the sauce, as we say in the states. I understand it a little better after hearing your opinion. I support diversity and celebrating unity. I mean, of course. It was just too much all over the place. It could have been streamlined and have a more coherent flow from on segment to the next. They definitely could have saved a lot of money. That light show I will never forget, though. I have never seen anything so beautiful! The gold balloon taking off, wow. I have no words. I would have given anything to see that in person. This was a spectacle to behold. Lucky you for being there!

Just to let you know, some of us Americans assume Bacchus/Dionysius when we see a purple/blue guy. I don’t understand how people saw the Last Supper. Plus, that’s just a painting. They don’t teach classical art nor mythology in many schools in America, anymore. I’m old, so this was in school for me. And, I went to catholic schools! 🤷🏽‍♀️

The very best Olympic ceremony ever! It was extremely brave to do, and a presentation that only one can dream of as someone did and made it come true. It was very artistic showing many forms of art that only Paris knows how! It didn’t leave anyone out, it was bursting with multiculturalism and people performing of various backgrounds which is what Paris is today. It felt like the whole world was really celebrating coming together and asking for more peace especially in John Lennon’s song, Imagine. That was a world prayer and a message to the idiots currently destroying it. Lennon would have been very proud of that moment. I enjoyed the use of technology and the moving of the Olympic flame through the metro and the rest of Paris, that was so precious. I never watched an Olympic ceremony constantly crying, it was so emotional, filled with lots of respect for the old and the unforgotten, as well as the new. I loved seeing people watch the Olympics from their balconies and windows, when does that happen? It felt so much more real and authentic than just a performance in an arena! Paris raised the bars and changed what Olympic Games can be. Expectations are high on other countries to do the same! Thank you to my Celine for leaving us with nothing but hope and strength for our tomorrow! I’ll never forget these Olympics and the message of love and peace that they were spreading to the rest of the world! Merci beaucoup! ❤

I am 72 and have seen many Opening Ceremonies. In 1996 I was fortunate enough to perform in the Opening Ceremony of the Atlanta Games. (Celine Dion sang that night as well. It was the first time most Americans heard her.) 2024 Paris was by far the most moving and impressive I have ever seen. I cried for most of the four hours. Paris is my favorite city on earth. Through this ceremony they managed to highlight so much of the incredible culture France has created for the world. BTW the metal band was playing on the Palais de la Cité. I think it's called the Conciergerie now. Ste. Chapelle is there.

I watched the entire show on television from the USA. I’ve been learning French for 8 months so I’m getting to know Paris via RUclips. I thought it was a beautiful, artistic event. It kept surprising me. I am a Bible reader, a Born Again Christian and some of it was hedonistic, so to speak. But it was art not a Bible lesson. I don’t expect everything such as movies or entertainment to believe like I believe.
Many Christians here in the USA thought it was mocking God, or the Last Supper (which is described in the Bible but it is not a painting by daVinci) and it’s okay to not watch 100% of any given piece of art if you find it offensive. The man painted in blue was not on television here. That part of the presentation appeared to me to be emulating a cat walk fashion show…I didn’t like that part but it was only a part of the entire event. Paris is known for fashion. I personally don’t care for fashion, it’s that simple.
I loved the Eiffel Tower light show. I loved the Hot Air Balloon part, very beautiful.
I think Paris did an incredible performance and as a Christian I didn’t expect it to line up with the Bible or my faith but that’s to be expected. The Bible says we are in the world, not of the world. The world, those who don’t believe like a Christian does, is all around us. We ought to censor ourselves from what is impure or unholy, that’s for sure, but we will have a very hard time trying to get everyone to do things like we want them to when they don’t hold to our beliefs. It’s just life.

But now it's all depressing, so I take my camera and move to France together with my girls, as soon as we can. Western Norway is still most beautiful in Europe, but with the new gigantic wind power plant in the middle of the Sognefjorden Fjord, Europe's longest fjord, it will be nothing but depressing there too. And we ruin our nature because Germany wants our hydropower as balance power. So I hate Germany! That's why we move to France!

I feel it was a poor representation of France & French culture. Instead of focusing on athletics & the athletics spirit of competition & sportsmanship, they choose to show the world a non-family friendly circus that was often just gross and wildly inappropriate and offensive. There were some wonderful performances like Céline Dion, but unfortunately the vulgar aspects kept it from being as magnificent as it could have been. I loved the idea of being outside & the athletes coming down the Seine by boat & the spectacular light show & flame lighting. It would have been the best in history if not for the vulgar aspects & that is a shame because there were amazing elements but the veering into disrespect & gross vulgarity will not be forgotten. There’s a time & a place for everything & disrespectful displays should not have been included in a ceremony to celebrate worldwide sportsmanship and excellence!

Thanks for explaining things from a French point of view. Australian commentary didn’t sensor but also didn’t explain who the main famous people were. I think it was fabulous to showcase the whole city - no country will ever top that because no city in the world has that much good architecture/ monuments. Arc Du Triomphe didn’t even feature or montmatre! A lot of far Right wing Christians were upset by the Lords Supper depiction but actually, there’s nothing more outrageous than crucifying the Son of God so I think the French depiction was pretty tame in comparison

I find its weird to put a drag show in a sports event , but for pride parade event then
    go for it
Its a shame that the weirdo DEI police Thomas Jolly should be picked to handle the ceremony concept
Athens and Beijing Olympics is good example about how to utilize every cultural potency in qualitative way about being grandeur without being gaudy
I'm not against the idea of grandeur ceremony but its about execute the idea in artistic and classy way
Not to be turned into all about hedonistic party that covering the message of social sensitivity , friendship and respect which Olympics should be

Some moments were very Olympic worthy, so 👏 👏for that. However as far as I recall I personally connected more to the London opening ceremony despite not being English (...and being French x)). James Bond, Mr Bean, etc, there were many references a LOT of people in the whole wide world could identify with or knew well. We could have done sth that reminded everyone why they like France too, but no, we in too many parts decided to stick to the cliché that we are rebels getting ready for the next revolution. I think different generations have different expectations and this show matched only a selective part of the target audience expectations. I have mixed feelings. I might rewatch the opening in a couple of years once my expectations will have been long forgotten & I might have a more positive opinion then. Summary : I assume we don't all agree on what the goal of such a ceremony is & that the organisers weren't necessarily aiming to satisfy a wide target audience/ were aiming to make a statement. I mean, why not, it's a choice. Just not what everyone expects so I'm not surprised to hear many mixed feelings.
Edit : to add some nuance to my comment, my personal favorite moments weren't necessarily the most popular moments either. Some moments DID get me starry-eyed. But even some nice themes were unfortunately also poorly executed for an Olympic opening ceremony. Thanks for the magical moments.

I adore your videos, except this one. Censoring something you don't like is terrible I agree with you on that; however making fun of what people hold sacred is terrible too. you might not agree with something but making fun of it is not democratic on the contrary it is absolutist. It is dictating that mocking religion is being open minded, it is very third republic you know. Saying this is what is right, we have decided for you nd if you don't like it you are a bigot. I don't agree with that, it is the very thesis of democracy and multiculturalism

I didn't watch the ceremony, I must admit, but my take from your video is this:
Good: Paris pulled out all the stops
Good: It took a multi-dimentional view of French culture.
Bad: Mocking the last supper is offensive. You don't have to adhere to a faith to understand that isn't really a tolerant thing to do. I don't mind the Drag/LGBT aspect, it's the aspect of making fun of a solemn thing.
All in all, It looks like the planners to be did an amazing job and showcased the City of Light in a spectacular way. Thank you for your take on the opening ceremony and I can't wait for tomorrow's video!

THEO BONJOUR ! - I watched the ENTIRE FIVE [5] HOURS here in Miami. I thought it was FABULOUS, even with the controversy over the Last Supper vs Greek Bacchanal. My absolute two favorites were the Women on the tall POLES with those colors and Celine Dion singing Chanson d'Amour. But I really loved the Horse on the Seine, and the acrobat over the Roofs of Paris - he was amazing! Many people did not understand some things because they were SPECIFIC to France! Dommage
