The story behind the unfinished murtis (idols) at the Puri Jagannath Temple is a fascinating legend that adds to the temple’s mystique.
According to the legend, King Indradyumna, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, wanted to build a grand temple for the deity. However, he was unsure how to design the idols. After meditating, he received guidance from Lord Vishnu in a dream to find a special log of neem wood at Bankamuhana. Despite finding the log, the king struggled to find a sculptor who could carve the idols, as all their tools broke.
One day, a mysterious artist named Ananta Maharana, who was actually Lord Vishwakarma in disguise, offered to carve the idols on the condition that no one should disturb him until he finished. The king agreed, but after several days, curiosity got the better of him, and he opened the door to the workshop. Inside, he found the unfinished idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, with incomplete limbs. The artist had vanished, leaving the idols as they were.
Lord Brahma then appeared to the king and reassured him that the idols were perfect as they were and that Lord Vishnu was pleased with them. Thus, the unfinished idols have remained in the temple, symbolizing the divine mystery and the king’s devotion.
