I read that the statement was misunderstood; they did not state that women were harder to animate, but actually said they had an idea for a female co-lead that they scrapped due to time constraints and such. Not entirely sure if this was true, though. I can't remember where I heard it.

For those of you wondering, it was stated by Ubisoft that Arno was raised by a Templar, so this could be his guardians daughter or that he could be like Haytham and then becomes an Assassin at the end of the game.

From what I know Arno was raised by his father, an assassin, for the first eight years of his life then a Templar killed his father and adopted Arno and that girl was the Templar's biological daughter so Arno and that girl were raised together. (her name is Elise)
but then another Templar betrayed Arno's adoptive Templar. so Arno joined the assassins in the early game and started looking for his adoptive fathers murderer (with Justice and answers being his motivation) however Elise is also hunting the Templar murderer for vengeance (sort of like Ezio but she is a Templar and has a vagina)
2 other things, Arno's adoptive father is the Templar Grand master and when that other Templar murdered him (Arno's adoptive father) he became the Templar Grand Master
