Unity was way ahead of its time and lots of "fans" got pissed because their decade old machines couldn't handle it. My machine was totally fine until AC4 but struggled a lot in Unity but the graphical improvement was off the chart so it was totally understandable for me. My options were play on low settings with good fps or high settings with bad fps and of course I went to the high settings, I don't want to miss all those beautiful details. But some people, mostly the whinies, just trashed the game everywhere hence, giving it a bad reputation. Notice how Syndicate's visual looks a bit inferior compared to Unity. They had to downgrade a bit just to satisfy the fans. And after that, the franchise got bombarded with "repetitive" notion and they changed it with origins. Now they're saying the same thing with Valhalla and people now wants to revert back to the old style.
Personally for me, AC Unity was the pinnacle of the franchise. It has the best graphics, best AC mechanic, it has a creed, awesome multiplayer, best fight animations, best parkour. It hits the perfect spot for what is to be called the true
      Assassin's Creed.

Remember the times when Assassin's Creed was about Assassins and their Views about the Unholy Views of Templars and they really look like Assassins and not some goofball with a spear and shield attacking everyone.
Well Some in comment section will say that it is a Creed so anyone can be a part of it, but the main concept of AC was to Fight against the Dark with Light while living in the shadows not showing in broad daylight with an Huge Axe and killing people with it

In Odyssey, it clearly stated the Kassandra/Alexios are just mercenaries not assassin. They don't have the hidden blade instead a broken spear from leonidas. They didn't even get to interact with the hidden ones because odyssey was set 400 years before Origins before the formation of hidden ones/assassin nor the templars. The story revolves around the safety of the "Staff of Hermes" and how Kassandra/Alexios took care of the staff for 2000 years.

Learning more utility on the rope dart makes me want to replay the story again so I can utilize that tool alot more. It just has some very flashy moves and can be quite the asset when dealing with more counter savvy enemies.

I love every AC up to syndicate. Because you FEEL like an assassin. And that should be the target of AC games if you ask me. The period of the Renaissance with Ezio was just beautiful as well as Altair during the 3rd crusade set the "vibe" that an assassins creed game should have.
Assassins creed 3, 4 and Rogue changed the combat system by removing the rpg elements that previous games had. The combat, although a bit unrealistic and easy, made you feel like you were a total badass. Also included the best ship combat we had seen in games up until then.
Assassin's creed Unity and Syndicate refined the once clunky parkour, or free running as it is referred to, and made it feel so smooth. Also kill animations were revamped which was very cool to see, and they added the "crouch to enter stealth mode" which was huge cause now you felt like you were actually sneaking into areas. We also saw some RPG elements returning to move away from the "press one button to win" gameplay that many people criticized in previous games.
Here's my problem. Assassins creed faceplanted since then. Once I played origins i was shocked with the step backwards the game had taken. They completely got rid of all the countless kill animations added a heavy RPG system which felt bad and they fucked up by adding the most clunky free run system ever seen in the franchise. After playing through all of the game I was left very disappointed. I couldn't even double assassinate!
I haven't played odyssey but it looks the same as origins and even worse. No hood or hidden blade, basically throwing away everything left from the AC identity. And I fear that Valhalla is going to be like that as well.
Didn't really talk about the story in the games cause most of them were mediocre. If I had to choose the best stories I'd say AC2 and AC Black Flag but that's just my opinion.

origins is the game that makes me feel like an assassin the most imo
sneaking around a bandit outpost assassinating bandits with my hidden blade
and bow feels fucking amazing and the ai feel a lot more real cause they actually move around and have needs and do shit instead of just guarding an entrance 24/7
also causing a fire to cause a diversion or using a torch and sleep dart to put a bunch of enemies to sleep is sick
also in that game you cant 1v1 a whole garrison with ease which makes it a tad bit more fun for me

I can’t place which combat style as the first on my list, but I can definitely place the worst... in my opinion, I think syndicate has the most unsatisfying combat in the series, it’s all very cartoony and the animation feels laggy and unpolished, like if you have to do a double, triple, or quadruple kill they all have to be in “stunned” mode and you have to walk around to line them up juuuuust right to trigger. It’s weird.

Honestly, my favorite game in term of combat is AC4. Black Flag was my first Assassin's Creed game and the combat just hit the right feel between fluid and fast. Plus the fact it required focus on the enemies nearby because of guns and bombs, plus parrying and then using one of your pistols to finish the bloke was awesome.
