Prime Minister Marape announces progress in Wafi-Golpu Mine negotiations

- On Friday, August 2, 2024, Prime Minister Hon. James Marape announced that the State Negotiating Team (SNT) is in active discussions with Wafi-Golpu mine developers, Newmont and Harmony, aiming to finalise the Mine Development Contract (MDC). This crucial step is in preparation for the swift issuance of the Special Mining Lease (SML).
The announcement was made during a meeting in Lae with Wafi-Golpu landowners, Morobe Governor Hon. Luther Wenge, Deputy Prime Minister and Lae MP Hon. John Rosso, and other key stakeholders. SNT Chairman Mr. Dairi Vele and MRA Managing Director Mr. Jerry Garry provided detailed updates on the mine's progress, while Governor Wenge, Prime Minister Marape, landowner representative Mr. John Nema, and Deputy Prime Minister Rosso also delivered remarks.
Governor Wenge and the landowners expressed a strong desire for the SML to be issued promptly and for the mine to commence operations. In response, Prime Minister Marape requested that a representative from the Morobe Provincial Government be included in the SNT for the final negotiations with Newmont and Harmony.
