Tom's true goal is to somehow get Victoria Coren-Mitchell on as "revenge" for only connect.

This was perhaps the most dramatic final round I have seen in a long time.

I Hope this is going to be a Show on BBC
I don't know if White Light offered the stage for free for the filming of this or how the deal was made. but however it was, they got one hell of a sales pitch out of the deal.
Except what % of viewers have the need and financial resources to hire them?
This entire series was awesome, I'd love to see more stuff done with this tech!
I've enjoyed those. Thank you.
I love knowing that I was subscribed to only one person in each round before this so I had someone to root for and that they're all here in the finals.
So three episodes, then a champion of champions. If the pattern continued, episode 13 would be very, very, interesting.
The champion of champion of champions.
The Rockstar/Take Two thing really surprised me, since in 2018 GTAV alone was announced as the most profitable entertainment product of all time.
I've got another strategy if this ever returns: bluff bluffing on correct answers. When you 100% know it just either pretend you don't or bluff badly
A right answer should give you a bar.
Please make more of this
Alec: The guesser
Ellen: The challenger
Vanessa: The trickster
I can see Tom Scott hosting a show like Jeopardy!
Oh come onnnn Vanessa looking down at her phone, reading off Google 😤
I’m disappointed no one said Minnesota, mining, and manufacturing (3M). Probably would’ve tripped up their opponent seeing the full name like that too.
They would've gotten it wrong. 3M legally changed their name to just "3M Company" in 2002. Like BAE, BP, CERN, TLC, and ADT, their official names are now just letters that don't officially or legally stand for anything.
@@ZanHecht Another commenter mentioned they shouldn't allow Google as an answer because now it's owned by Alphabet. If they're OK with Google they're probably OK with Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, too.
Suggestion: the successful challenger gains the bar of signal lost by the challenged. This would make the show longer - which is no bad thing. Most such shows on TV last for 30 minutes, including commercials...
Vanessa looking on the phone for the last question
Cointreau comes from where I am standing and where I was born, Angers, in France. Tom you should come here, it's a nice city :)
That Dim sum question was diabolical. I'm Chinese and I didnt even think of Dim Sum until they talked about it. Then I was like duhhh 点心, but I wouldn't literally translate that as touch heart, if you split up the characters they translate as dot heart, and together they are so ubiquitious as snacks that I would have never translated it as touch heart. But a quick google search refutes my thoughts so...
Triple sec and Cointreau are not really separate liqueurs. Cointreau is a brand of triple sec. Triple sec is much older than Cointreau, and the original brand name was "Curaçao Blanco Triple Sec."
That was cool hearing her mention Blizzard and Rockstar, sadly it’s not surprising they aren’t on the list
You better make another season! :(
It's brilliant idea for a board game or multiplayer internet quiz! I want to see this as boardgame to play with friends. Is really nobody thought of implementing bluffing into quiz game or I just didn't heard of it?

Rockstar are known for their confrlicting nature but this conflict just came out of nowhere.
Wait, why did Vanessa start with two bars after the break?
In every episode during the final round they have to start at 2 bars
Glad to see robby rotten making a full recovery
Tom kept saying that the winner will have defeated 8 people, but isn't it only 4?
MAKE 5 BARS OF SIGNALS
In the second half, how did Vanessa get an extra bar?
Watch the previous episodes. Everyone starts off at 2 bars for the last challenge.
The final always begin with two bars each, whatever number of bars they had at the end of round 1.
Was wondering the same thing
@@shirou9790 Oh, okay

Ok.... Im a bit shocked that noone noticed the fact that Vanessa said dianxin for the chinese food question since that was the chinese name for dimsum.... Alec just barely dodged that bullet.

Congrats Vanessa! Yours has been an under-rated channel for years! I loved the Sleeping With Friends series! Fantastic work on your channel!
"Weirdness of my gaze"
No, the gaze was the best part.
Really well done in all. I almost wish they had 4 or 5 lives so they stick around a little longer or make comebacks. Also having a fourth contestant would be interesting, because it would allow for another "round" with a different ruleset. That might make the show too long unless Tom Scott channels his inner Alex Trebek to move along the episode. Hoping for a season 2 in general sometime!!
I think 3 contestants is fine, but I’ve also previously thought that 4 bars would make it less random, less arbitrary.
You can “die” *real* fast in this game, and it’s *very* dependent on whether you get good or bad question categories. Giving everyone 1 extra bar would even out the randomness by a lot.
Probably for the special TechDif version.
I'm craving for TechDif now, can't tell why XD
One more life please!!!
Ooh, and having four players means we'd see _16_ RUclipsrs per season instead of nine!

Cool subtitles! They are colour coded with the frame of each contestant!
This is actually a great idea for the audio impaired because it shows who is taking if they are off screen!
@@seancallaghan54 I believe Tom mentioned that it's the BBC's style of subtitles in the comments under an earlier episode.
And yet, RUclips are removing the ability to do this. What a brilliant idea!
simonasvideo you made hundreds of people turn on subtitles to see this, including me!
But doesn't that make it harder to differentiate different people talking for people who are audio-impaired and some sort of color blind?
For the record, there's one game company on the list: Nintendo.

Alec's challenge on the Vasco de Gama question was wrong-headed.
If the answer was wrong and neither player challenged, Alec has a 50/50 of making it to the next round.
If the answer was wrong and Alec challenged, the gain is not worth the risk of it being right.
Agreed. It's a waiting and bluffing game where you have to bluff even if you're not the one who's being asked questions. If you're skilled enough, you could even trick the other person to challenge a correct answer and lose points.
Not enough game theory has been used this series

Question about the technology:
What do the players see on their end of the call? It was mentioned in a previous episode that this could be rendered in real time - are they seeing the same shot we are, with Tom onstage talking to them, or is there a way to hide a camera in the LED wall so that you can more or less make direct eye contact?
Probably the same view we see. Direct eye contact would only work with Tom and not with the other players.
Correct - they see the stream live from the stages main camera.

All the contestants have such a good awareness of their “surroundings”.
Was it always a rule that the contestants get points back, when they make it to the final round? Vanessa went into the final with 1 bar left, but after the break had 2. Perhaps I missed it in previous episodes.
i'm almost completely sure not, however that situation didn't occur in earlier episodes

The septenium one sas simple because im Mexico we call a president's term a sexenium, as they last 6 years instead of 4
Even just decennium
Huh, here in the US we don't really use specific terms for how long the serve. Whether it's the president's four years, the Senate's 6 we just call it their term.
I just went with the etymology. Septem = 7, annus = year, therefore septennium = 7 years. Millennium is 1000 years because mille = 1000

Okay, this was a very fun show! I liked it a lot!
But in the future, when you do things like the category where people are supposed to list them, may I suggest putting the category on screen somewhere as a graphical overlay? Because my (diagnosed) ADHD brain has a hard time paying full attention, so I kinda zone out during the chit-chat section and then I come back when the tension gets back on. And suddenly they're listing things from a category I completely missed, so I have to rewind and try to figure out what the category was and I think putting a graphic on screen would really help me keeping track of what's going on.
An interesting accessability feature. Maybe it should be implemented indeed...
I wish there will be a season 2! And even more for that matter. There are many youtubers to choose from.
I would also suggest putting a link to the answer list in the description bc now I need to know if what I was thinking is right.

"Which Chinese food translates literally from Cantonese as 'touch-heart'"
Okay, so in Chinese, it's actually 点心, with [点] meaning 'dot', and [心] obviously meaning 'heart'. Even looks like one. In Cantonese it'd be pronounced 'dim sum'. In Chinese, it'd be dian(3) xin(1). You can Google Translate the pronunciation if you'd like.
However, when you ask a Chinese-speaker what [点] means, we wouldn't think it means 'touch'. See, the thing is that Chinese words sometimes carry a more complicated meaning with them that can't be translated exactly one-to-one.
In Chinese, we usually provide tenses (past/present/future) with extra words rather than changing individual word forms (下雨了/正在下雨/将会下雨 instead of rained/raining/will rain). With some extra words (and thus context), [点] would mean 'to touch gently to form a dot'. Or it could also mean 'to dip', or 'to create a small divot'. Thus, we can see that the word has some intent to it in that a small _something_ is formed, which again ties back to how just the word [点] means 'dot'.
It doesn't _just_ mean 'touch'. This is more an explanation of the nature of translation rather than a criticism--how the intrinsically different natures of languages can cause problems in understanding. What I _would_ like to point out is that Tom didn't need to say "translates literally from Cantonese" because the script for [点心] is the same in both languages anyway.
This is something that I love about language in general, but it's so nice to see the history of words inside of the characters that form them especially in languages that use the Chinese writing system

It didn't make sense for Alec to challenge purely from the game theory PoV.
There were 4 situations, 1 of them improves his relative standing slightly (correct challenge), 1 of them would have been neutral (correct lack of challenge),1 of them led to a tiebreak or improved his position (incorrect lack of challenge), 1 of them led to a game over (incorrect challenge). It didn't make sense for him to challenge.
Also, this is probably why I'm never invited to game shows.
thought the same thing when that happened!
An incorrect lack of challenge causes him to lose also though
@@arbitraryending6489 I think Tom said that would go to a tie break because two people have to make it to the final
Lmao but good logic
The problem with what you've said is that you'd have to factor in how likely the answer was correct. For example, there are quite a few more than one major countries in the world at the time, so a random guess would be more likely be incorrect. If you figured that the other person was probably bluffing/unsure, there's a good chance you'll get a correct challenge, and you'd have to reweight your four scenarios.
Edit: Okay I never got to see the tiebreaker so didn't quite get how it would work (not familiar with this kind of stuff...). I'd say the scenarios are still not equal but I agree that not challenging is safer.

Portuguese here, doing the same thing.
As a Cantonese speaker, I hate that ABCs put the false information of dim sum = touch heart out there, I mean, yes, if you take the two words apart, it can mean touch and heart respectively, but dim sum itself is ONE word that means snack in chinese, and the whole "touch heart" thing is bogus
It's like if someone said "did you know the English word for firework literally means 'set your employer ablaze'?"
I thought that sounded a bit wrong as well! But I wasn't sure if I should say anything, since I only speak Mandarin and not Cantonese...
Honestly i dont think its that big a deal, esl people are fine, people dont fully understand cantonese are fine. Its for fun and people dont always understand other languages
I think [and I am well aware that I'm merely a learner of Mandarin, not even Cantonese - and certainly not a native of either] that it is sort of implicit in the question that it isn't the actual used meaning of the words, just their technically correct meanings when separated.
If you asked: "Which city is [literally] known in Mandarin as Eastern Capital?" then it's clear it is splitting the words apart, and not actually worried that Tokyo (as it's Japanese/English name) does not really have any connection to the 'literal meaning' [now, could you argue the same with Beijing and Nanjing? That's slightly different because they're both used in both languages to mean the same thing but dim sum has taken on the status of a Proper Noun in English but dim and sum are not English nouns]
I thought that Tom said "Touch hard", but I might have misheard.
"Follower numbers and talent don't have the strongest relationship." - Brilliant!
