Really well done in all. I almost wish they had 4 or 5 lives so they stick around a little longer or make comebacks. Also having a fourth contestant would be interesting, because it would allow for another "round" with a different ruleset. That might make the show too long unless Tom Scott channels his inner Alex Trebek to move along the episode. Hoping for a season 2 in general sometime!!
I think 3 contestants is fine, but I’ve also previously thought that 4 bars would make it less random, less arbitrary. You can “die” *real* fast in this game, and it’s *very* dependent on whether you get good or bad question categories. Giving everyone 1 extra bar would even out the randomness by a lot.
Those ads are excellent, because not only do they promote products/companies, but they are educational as well. But to be honest, I wouldn't expect anything less from Tom. ;)
Alec's challenge on the Vasco de Gama question was wrong-headed. If the answer was wrong and neither player challenged, Alec has a 50/50 of making it to the next round. If the answer was wrong and Alec challenged, the gain is not worth the risk of it being right.

"Which Chinese food translates literally from Cantonese as 'touch-heart'" Okay, so in Chinese, it's actually 点心, with [点] meaning 'dot', and [心] obviously meaning 'heart'. Even looks like one. In Cantonese it'd be pronounced 'dim sum'. In Chinese, it'd be dian(3) xin(1). You can Google Translate the pronunciation if you'd like. However, when you ask a Chinese-speaker what [点] means, we wouldn't think it means 'touch'. See, the thing is that Chinese words sometimes carry a more complicated meaning with them that can't be translated exactly one-to-one. In Chinese, we usually provide tenses (past/present/future) with extra words rather than changing individual word forms (下雨了/正在下雨/将会下雨 instead of rained/raining/will rain). With some extra words (and thus context), [点] would mean 'to touch gently to form a dot'. Or it could also mean 'to dip', or 'to create a small divot'. Thus, we can see that the word has some intent to it in that a small _something_ is formed, which again ties back to how just the word [点] means 'dot'. It doesn't _just_ mean 'touch'. This is more an explanation of the nature of translation rather than a criticism--how the intrinsically different natures of languages can cause problems in understanding. What I _would_ like to point out is that Tom didn't need to say "translates literally from Cantonese" because the script for [点心] is the same in both languages anyway.
This is something that I love about language in general, but it's so nice to see the history of words inside of the characters that form them especially in languages that use the Chinese writing system

Kudos for not revealing the winners of the previous rounds in the thumbnail! And the format in general was hillarious, thank you for the entertainment!
Tom, this episode is better than previous ones because now it directly goes to the quiz rather than walks the participants through how to play, one by one.
Okay, this was a very fun show! I liked it a lot! But in the future, when you do things like the category where people are supposed to list them, may I suggest putting the category on screen somewhere as a graphical overlay? Because my (diagnosed) ADHD brain has a hard time paying full attention, so I kinda zone out during the chit-chat section and then I come back when the tension gets back on. And suddenly they're listing things from a category I completely missed, so I have to rewind and try to figure out what the category was and I think putting a graphic on screen would really help me keeping track of what's going on.
An interesting accessability feature. Maybe it should be implemented indeed... I wish there will be a season 2! And even more for that matter. There are many youtubers to choose from.
I have the exact same problem here! Sometimes I had to rewind three times - the last time because I forgot to listen to what they were saying bacause I was reading this comment 😅
I'd like to see another season of this show. But Tom Scott's game shows are so great, I'd watch more seasons of any and all of them. (Technical difficulties too.)
As a Cantonese speaker, I hate that ABCs put the false information of dim sum = touch heart out there, I mean, yes, if you take the two words apart, it can mean touch and heart respectively, but dim sum itself is ONE word that means snack in chinese, and the whole "touch heart" thing is bogus
Honestly i dont think its that big a deal, esl people are fine, people dont fully understand cantonese are fine. Its for fun and people dont always understand other languages
I think [and I am well aware that I'm merely a learner of Mandarin, not even Cantonese - and certainly not a native of either] that it is sort of implicit in the question that it isn't the actual used meaning of the words, just their technically correct meanings when separated. If you asked: "Which city is [literally] known in Mandarin as Eastern Capital?" then it's clear it is splitting the words apart, and not actually worried that Tokyo (as it's Japanese/English name) does not really have any connection to the 'literal meaning' [now, could you argue the same with Beijing and Nanjing? That's slightly different because they're both used in both languages to mean the same thing but dim sum has taken on the status of a Proper Noun in English but dim and sum are not English nouns]
Hi Tom , I liked this show hope to see season 2 soon and as for Vanessa, congratulations I am following u since past 2 years and was really happy that u r the grand champion cheers :)
Tom, to make it more fair, and to get rid of those uncomfortable "who is going to challenge" decisions, I propose that when one player is challenging, other shall make an explicit decision if they support that challenge or not. If they do not support a rightful challenge, they should loose a point.
This would definitely be more fair and make for healthier competition and much less "winner's guilt". On the other hand, in a show built around skill at bluffing, the opportunity to bluff your other opponent into taking on the risk for you seems relevant. Not that anyone on this show was steely enough to do so. Or were they...!
Can't believe how good of a showman you are. Those years of technical difficulties have really paid off. (side note there, I just realized that being disconnected is in fact a "technical difficulty")

I hope you make another season of this show. It has such an interesting idea of a trivia contest that I can't wait to see more !
Why aren't all ad-breaks like this?
also great show, can't wait for another season
I've always been suspicious as to why Vanessa constantly looks down, but I know that it's just my trust issues resurfacing.
Kudos for not revealing the winners of the previous rounds in the thumbnail! And the format in general was hillarious, thank you for the entertainment!
Thank You for this short series. It was wonderful and I appreciate you for making it.
"I do know what the word is in Mandarin."
"Do we *believe* that?"
🤣 They don't know this madman speaks Mandarin!
Tom, this episode is better than previous ones because now it directly goes to the quiz rather than walks the participants through how to play, one by one.
As a Portuguese fan of Technology Connections, I can't believe Alec lost because of Vasco da Gama...
What an absolutely wonderful format! Please keep making these!!
I would also suggest putting a link to the answer list in the description bc now I need to know if what I was thinking is right.
Yea I had to rewind for all three this episode
don't have ADHD but I also did zone out during those sections and then had to rewind(
I have the exact same problem here!
It's like if someone said "did you know the English word for firework literally means 'set your employer ablaze'?"
I thought that sounded a bit wrong as well! But I wasn't sure if I should say anything, since I only speak Mandarin and not Cantonese...
I thought that Tom said "Touch hard", but I might have misheard.
Thank you so much Tom and all the crew involved. This series was a lot fun to watch (also made me super anxious haha)!
Tom Scott’s distant set up has quite literally out-done every talk show’s cheap home set-up
Hi Tom , I liked this show hope to see season 2 soon and as for Vanessa, congratulations
I am following u since past 2 years and was really happy that u r the grand champion cheers :)
Ellen: 17:32
GTA Fans: we feel ya!
if were to have a chance of being right, shouldn't it have been parent company take 2 anyways?
Me, screaming Chevron: challenge! Blizzard: challenge! Rockstar: don't challenge!
I was surprised.
its nice to see some of my favorite youtubers from unrelated channels do things together..
I’ll be honest, I clicked because it looked like a Captain Disillusion silhouette
They look similar though
Greetings, children, I'm Tom Scott.
4 of my favourite "obscure" youtubers in one "obscure" video. Love it xx
I'd love to see The Technical Difficulties go for a round of this.
Tom and all the participants - thank you - great show, interesting tech demo, cool format for questions, and some new people to follow for content :)
Nah, ruins the game theory.
Can't believe how good of a showman you are. Those years of technical difficulties have really paid off. (side note there, I just realized that being disconnected is in fact a "technical difficulty")
Is it weird I’ve been subbed to ALL FOUR of these people for a long time?!
Yes, It is. Please stop
Amazing show, so well produced! The quality of the subtitles was particularly excellent, compared to (for example) shows on Netflix etc.
@Tom Scott Thanks for the show, that was really cool. I think there is a small typo in one of the link to Ellen's channels, there is one too many "e" in "outsidextra"
For those seeing this comment now, it's been fixed!
Another brilliant concept; and classic Tom Scott! Excellent use of technology and superb production!
"Is dumpling even a Cantonese word?"
Bruh. It's English.
Haven't you heard of Dump Ling?
I mean, ketchup comes from kê-chiap which means "fish brine" in the Amoy dialect.
This was so dense...
@@hammerth1421 Now, in Cantonese, it is pronounced "ke tsup", which means "tomato juice". I find that similarity in pronunciation for such different things quite a fantastic coincidence.
@@HatchetHaro On that one I would say Cantonese adapted Ketchup
This was an interesting plug section - tou can tell Tom's both interested in the technology, and grateful to the company for letting him play with their set.
Cool! RUclips subtitles can be coloured now!
RUclips is ending community subtitles, though :(
~ 6:01 If this had been Citation Needed, I would have expected one of the lads to come up with "Ya dim sum, you lose sum..." «groan»
it's outsidextra as the youtube channel for ellen. The link is broken/wrong
That said, don't stop doing those, they are great!
well done with the game show host dramatic pauses, Tom!
Season 2 when? This one was amazing.
One of the most enjoyable gameshow series I've watched. Brilliant
Hope it returns many times
Noooo Alec! Vanessa should've guessed, or they should've both gone down. May your connection be restored one day.
Game theory wise, neither should have challenged unless they were absolutely sure. Then they could make it up in the tiebreaker.
Love this show so much! Thanks Tom!
Tom, the second link for Ellen is invalid. Just wanted to let you know :)
For those who are curious:
Dim sum is written as 點心, where 點 means point and 心 means heart
Wait how did Vanessa go from one Bar, to two Bars in the final?
No matter what, Round 2 starts out fair.
This was a great show to watch! Really great work Tom and the people behind it making it work.
Hey Tom ! How did Venessa get 2 bars after the commercial ? It was supposed to be 1
In the second round, everyone starts with 2 bars.
It is reset.
Bars reset to 2 for the second round, so the survivors are on even footing. That's happened in the previous three episodes too.
Nice touch with the subtitles. I like the colour coded text as well the pronunciation of Adidas.
