A TechConnections and Tom Scott crossover is something that I didn’t realize I wanted as much as I did until now, and now I demand more, because you two cover topics that are just similar enough that I’d love to see what random things you guys could find together...but also, I love this show, the concept and way it’s done is very cool, and I look forwards to seeing more!
Knowing that there must be some correlation between being incredibly articulate, having a well honed dry wit, and having a broad knowledge base my money was behind Alec from the outset. (I look forward to checking out Sally and Arun now as well).

I was rooting for Alec the whole show. His channel deserves more exposure, content is consistently top notch and he's humble enough to put a blooper reel at the end of every episode.
Tactically, chemical elements is one where you're either going to be reasonably confident or have no clue and just have to hope your opponents don't know much about them either, while with Disney films, most people have partial coverage, but hardly anyone will know everything. So if you're not confident about either, Disney's the one to take a punt on, while if you're knowledgeable about both, the elements are probably a better bet.
the question I have is who is going to buy a setup like that outside of TV productions and maybe RUclips (for there RUclips studio spaces). it is a bit overkill for your average user. the techniek is very interesting don't get me wrong but it might be a bit expensive to use for home use.
@@strangejune still the question would remain. for who would a setup like that be interesting. Even renting I don't think that the equipment and the people needed will go for cheap. I can see a big time TV network buy or rent a setup or even multiple if that is possible. For RUclips i think that the setup might be to much (if not sponsored like in this case).
@@sirBrouwer indie filmmakers for one (big studios ofc too, but that's covered not the point). sometimes if the greenscreen effect which is being made is too complex, the price of this setup might drop well below the required human work hours of editors. basically if you already have a professional team, swapping human hours with rented technology might very well be worth it

I think it's dishonest to call what was clearly a blind guess "a bluff"; unless the game strictly considers a 'bluff' as "I don't know the correct answer, but I'm not going to admit that."

"Technology Connections" is one of the latest channel discoveries of mine and I loved it. I don't know how on earth it was came to my feed but I was watched that "VHS vs Beta" topic and fell into his fun, explanatory and very informative narration. I'm surprised to see him here.
It happens that I know exactly where I got Technology Connections - it was the same place I got Doug DeMuro: I was thinking about buying a Chevy Bolt a couple years ago.
Technology Connections is definitely one of my favorite channels on the video. Practically every single video I watched of his has been interesting in some way and the presentation is always well done.

I REALLY like this format! It has all the good stuff: Knowledge, suspense, Tom Scott... yet it is short, without annoying interruptions (like music or something any other gameshow has)!

It's a nucleic base (part of DNA) -- and those are everywhere, so what's going on? Turns out that guanine crystals reflect light and the shimmer of fish scales is due to guanine crystals. These crystals are used in certain types of makeup, purely for the shimmering effect.

I REALLY like this format! It has all the good stuff: Knowledge, suspense, Tom Scott... yet it is short, without annoying interruptions (like music or something any other gameshow has)!

Tom: 6:21 guanine not a *part* of a fish. It's extracted from / contained in the scales, not another name *for* "fish scales". (And it should have a clear final n; I heard you say "guani", which isn't a thing.)
7:39 7:52 "aglio-" ≠ "algio-". Algio- / algo- are medical terms for 'pain' (from N.Latin algia, A.Greek algos); e.g. algophobia (fear of pain) or neuralgia (pain along a nerve). Aglio means garlic (in Italian; from Latin alium), so agliophobia would be a weird coinage for "fear of garlic". (Better: aliophobia.)
"Agliophobia" is a ghost word (like 'dord') that seems to have gotten into silly lists of phobias, but is nevertheless a clear error and not actually used. Not a fair question (unless you were prepared to accept 'fear of garlic').
PS You're a linguist. You should've known the Latin _alg-_ vs _a[g]l-_ and the danger of totally spurious entries in e.g. a list of phobias. :-P

It's a nucleic base (part of DNA) -- and those are everywhere, so what's going on? Turns out that guanine crystals reflect light and the shimmer of fish scales is due to guanine crystals. These crystals are used in certain types of makeup, purely for the shimmering effect.
Thank you for the aglio thing. "Spaghetti aglio e olio" is spaghetti with garlic and oil, a nice simple sauce. Tom should have lost a bar.
The guanine crystals are in the skin beneath the scales anyway, so not even in the scales themselves.
@@peterfireflylund Excellent follow-up. Would it be fair to say that guanine is the name for a "part of a human"? I don't think so. It's a really unfair question, as phrased. Which is a pity, because the underlying fact it's asking about is actually quite interesting.
A better phrasing might be eg: "In its crystalline form, the DNA component guanine is an important component of special makeup, and it's harvested from certain fish. (What part of the fish is it harvested from?) / (What's special about that makeup?) / (What fish is it harvested from?)"
Considering Alec is possibly one of my favourite youtubers past Tom, this makes me happy.
