Great video! Spider plants are sensitive to fluoride and chlorine present in most tap water. You should let your tap water sit for 24 hours to allow these elements to evaporate before watering your spider plant. since i have started this practice my plant is much greener, growing like crazy, have probably 30 or more pups and no more brown tips!
Made such a difference in my plants Also spider plants like to be in a crowded pot. the more crowded, the more pups they produce. My plant makes so many babies, we call them tribbles, after the star trek series. The babies have actually sent out shoots , so the plant has three different levels! Crazy!
Hmmm? Well just make sure you are not overwatering. I put an alarm on my phone for house plant watering days. And by a waer meter. I was so surprised when I got one and discovered I had several plants that I was actually over watering. Try the dechlorinated water for at least 3 watering cycles. You might also try a product called super thrive, which is like a vitamin booster. It is different from a plant fertilizer which you don't want to give a sick plant. Good luck Alejandro!
I put my 30 year old spider plant outside ever summer, this year the growth has tripled, it is huge, I was going through it removing the dead leaves and a damn bird has built a nest in it and laid 3 eggs.. hope it doesn't damage my plant.. this has never happened
Ha ! Ha ! Ha!! I take it your Chlorophytum was hanging up in a partly shaded position at the time? Ideal real estate for little Birds planning to raise a family. And they couldn't have been spooked either despite their newly choosen home being very prone to regularly getting flooded out. Just a tiny tip: You don't have to remove leaves if they are still green. Of course they contribute to the plants energy production. What you may cut though if you want are the leaves that are slowly becoming yellow. Transport-damaged leaves still continue to photosynthesize , they just don't look so pleasing to the eye. It's like you're chopping off your thumb because it looks weird. It still fulfills its purpose. I hope you get my point. 😅
Depending on why it’s discolored it may be helpful for the plant to remove the leaves simmalarly to how we cut off fingers because they have a dangerous infection except with plants they can grow a new one easily
Great vid! Thanks for being accurate, brief, and thorough. YES...its possible to be brief AND thorough although few have that skill. Grabbed my first baby from a plant at my fav restaurant. I've always thought of spider plants and hanging baskets as being almost synonymous with each other. But last year I decided to plant one of my older and bigger spider plants in a about three and a half to four foot tall concrete garden planter. Not only is the display of her babies hanging down the side of the planter striking and dramatic it has also made propagating a cinch. Just set a pot of moistened soil on the ground under where the pups are hanging then when they establish just cut them off from the mother
During the winter months, I put my spider plants under a 35W grow light and turn it on for at least 16 hours of the day. The light stays about a foot above the plants. You can grow a single pup to a full 2-3' round within 6 months. In 4 months time, a pup can grow from a 3" pot to an 8" pot easily. They also enjoy tightly packed soil when you do transplant. When I water mine, I use a spigot so I can get past the leaves. I keep the humidity for the growing area in the winter to at least 22-38%. The temps are good between 68-93, just be sure to water more on the hotter days. The best option to water them is using RO (Reverse Osmosis). I usually give them a little plant food once a month.
I love this plant! Thanks so much for sharing. Evidently, a bird dropped a few plants on the lawn at our new house and I found them growing, where some old tree stumps were. Thank you for sharing this video. At work, I have both verigated and solid sharing the same pot for 10 years. I have given 100s of pups to my coworkers, and they seem to do well.
So helpful!!!! Thank you! My grandma gave me 2 spider plants today. I’m so excited!! Thanks to your wonderful video I will be able to properly care for my new blessings!🌱🌱😊😊
Once I take my pups off the mother plant, I put them in water to get the roots to grow a little longer and stronger. And then I add soil to the water a little bit more every two days. So it's actually sitting in a mud slurry. I found that this way actually eliminates the shock of spider plant usually goes into when it's transplanted straight into soil!!!
Thank you so much , I just realized my spider plants were root bound ! I transferred them to a bigger pot now . They were babies in a 4 inch pot and wow those roots are thick and there’s a lot ! Thanks again ! 🌿💚
Awesome video bro. Glad i found this channel. Spider plants and pothos are my go to plants. Easy care, both can be wacked down like grass and will come back. They're good for purifying air. You can continuously propagate more plants, like you said. My spider plant is 10 years old from a pup on my mom's plant, who knows how old it is.
You have such a lovable passion for what you do! Every single plant question I have, I bring straight to your channel. Thank you for sharing your light and knowledge with the world! ☺️💚
VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE ! Last year I grew spiders from seeds. They took over 2 weeks to germinate and were 3" high before the tray got dumped. I'm hoping my next batch will not 'go to the dogs' ! Thanks so much for the information on the different varieties and variegation sunlight requirements ! The seedling 'pups' were a nice, solid shade of green and puzzling me !
This is great advice. I remember my mom growing these in the 80s. I have two and one I've had for about 20 years. I can't kill these things! Lol!! I don't repot unless they're ready to bust open the pot and I water from the bottom.
Thanks for the grate tips! I recently inherited a reverse variation spider plant from my father in law. It was my husband’s plant when he was a boy over a decade ago and boy does it need pruning! At about 3 foot wide it takes up a lot of real estate in our very small living room. I love it though and have already propagated three babies for friends and family.
I stand corrected! I just counted EIGHT spider plants! I would honestly like the whole thing to be smaller. Could I break up this group and replant them into 2 or 3 different pots? Would it hurt or help the plants?
I love in the South East of England. Spiders are quite hardy and I've plant them in my garden. Several came back from last year this year. I suppose we did not have that much frost. There has been one growing from a crack in my paving for years. I usually keep a few indoors and start new plants from the babies during the winter ready for going out in the spring. They brighten up shady spots.
I've got spider plants on my garden and I was wondering why they were propagating so quickly! Turns out that it's on a space with lots of sunlight so it makes sense that I've got so many baby spider plants. Will keep all of this in mind to have better plants. Thank you so much for this video!!!
Yayyy! This makes me feel so much better 😂 I thought I did something wrong with the spider plant I inherited from my mom when she moved years ago. She kept it just barely alive but it was a fighter and I’m sure it’s glad it didn’t give up as now it’s doing quite well (southwest light and self-watering pot that I’ve gotten accustomed to knowing its “water weight”) and has lots of tendrils and babies. But when I repotted it about a month ago I almost had a heart attack 🤣 I’ve never had one so I’ve never seen roots like that even when I first repotted it upon inheritance. I did just pot a baby that had started showing its own collection of healthy lil roots so fingers crossed!
Brilliant info. I just purchased a similar plant and hadn’t a clue how to care for it. Thank you. Brilliant, brilliant, straight to the point info! No faffing about and wasting time. I will be following you. I am based in the UK. Keep uploading! Do you know anything about caring for avocado plants grown from seed?
Thank you, Epic Gardener! Your videos are so helpful eland easy to understand for a new gardener. From one didactic to another, you are an awesome teacher. I feel like you give your audience a lot of positive reinforcement, and your manner of teaching is both kind and honest. I watch dozens of your videos, but I’m finally commenting to thank you. So thank you for being you and for sharing your horticultural knowledge with all of us. 🙏🏽 🌱
Hi - love your videos so much! I know it's two years since you made this, but I do have a question: I have a couple of awesome spider plants and they throw pups all the time. Last time I propagated (I do water propagation until the roots grow a bit, then plant into soil), I made something like 12 plants, gave many of those away, and out of those, only one survived! Is there a good length of time you would recommend to wait and make sure the plants are "good to go"? Also, one hot tip to share: the healthiest of my spiders lives in a hanging basket with a plastic liner, so when the water runs out, it's kind of caught there between waterings, and the plant loves it. This is the one that constantly makes pups. TIA!
Thank you! Very thorough presentation. Mine is giving off pups and I love your tips about watering. I noticed it sliding the water off, too, as it got bigger. I'll make sure I'm giving her a good drink from now on. Thanks, again!
My family had a huge spider plant and an even bigger pile of babies growing off of it! It was so crazy we couldn’t keep it in the house anymore! We’ve decided to let the spider plant “calm down” outside on the porch during winter. I stole some of its babies and their roots have grown so fast even though they’re just in a bowl of water!
Thanks for making this video. I now understand why my spider plant died. Now I bought 2 new ones. Im going to do the things you've said and hopefully my new spidies will flourish. 😊
These plants almost grow wild where I live in Australia. Indoors or outdoors. Just give them enough light and water. I discovered this watering trick when I had to be away from home for a few a few weeks and could not water them, so I took a risk and left my spider plant in a saucer full of water, knowing one should never do this to most plants. Much to my surprise, when I returned my spider plant looked better than when I had left it. I concluded it must love this, since it was thriving so well. But I have seen them thrive even baking in fierce Aussie summer sun, lushing all over place producing heaps of baby spider plants. But, I noticed they do mot do as well in colder regions like Melbourne unless in a warm sunny indoor environment.
Thanks for this. I just repotted a spider plant, and you gave great info that I didn't know! In reference to cat's getting high off of it. This explains a great deal. On the upper shelf it goes!
So glad I found you! I was worried about my spider plant. It was doing well, but then after the smoke from forest fires for a week, blocking out the sun and even leaking into our house, it started to yellow and brown at the tips, some leaves really limp and yellow. I watered it with fertilizer thinking it would get it through, but then it yellowed and browned. :( I hope it pulls through!
I love these plants. Can't kill them. I live in the UK and I stuck my biggest one, the mama plant outside as it got a bit smelly after overwatering it which caused rot. It lasted amazingly long through the winter before wilting away and I was sure it was done for. Nope! It grew back in the spring bigger than ever and it's currently flowering with five offshoots like there is no tomorrow. With its kids and grandkids indoors I'm going to run out of space for these plants soon, welp.
I have the reverse variegated one, put it on top of my fridge, a week later most of the leaf turned to brown (probably because of the heat from the back of the fridge 🤷🏻♂️). I was so close to toss it away, but my friend told me to prune all of the brown leaves (ended up with only 5 healthy leaves), moved it from the top of the fridge, watered it with dehumidifier water, and it is thriving now. I’m glad that I didn’t throw it away
I bought one week ago it was doing good in balcony as soon I bring it into my sitting room under tube light , it started dying, im taking it back to where it was hope it will survive. watering tip is great thanks.
Hey Kevin came back to your video because I have to repot my Spider plant and dreading it because it's huge with four babies lol!! But thank you for all your tips!!🙏🏼🙏🏼
Since watching this video I've been eating my own spider plant! WOW, at first I thought it was the cat? But I don't own a cat!! That's when I found out I was just hallucinating 😜 my 2 spider ferns and myself have been together now for 7 years. Going green and going strong! ❤️💞❤️
I went to transplant my spider plant and when I saw the roots and the tubers I immediately thought something was wrong lol. Thank you for clarifying what the tubers are because they freaked me out lmao
I rooted two pups in water. Then I transferred to small pitchers with no drainage holes- I did put small pebbles at bottom. The pitchers are ceramic so I couldn’t put drainage holes in them. Is this an instance where the rocks will be benefit- should I use sponge instead?
They grow outside in Southern California. I put cloth over in frost, but otherwise they live in very large pots and are watered with the hose, no special water. Some of mine are 20 years old. Easy plants :)
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the Spider Plant. I just got my very first Spider plant and it is so pretty and has a lot of blooms on it . I will be checking in with you for any advice if an issue should occur. Thank you
I grew up with my mom having spider plants ....wrll the other day at the grocery store i bought a baby plant . I thought it looked like a spider plant but the scientific name on the tag had me second guessing it and today i looked it upand indeed its a spider plant....just a little one but growing new leaves like crazy underneath.... They look like ribbons actually when the leaves are small. I was happy to learn its a spider plant as i have been wanting one myself for awhile and i say its a young plant but for $4.99 (USD) is a great price considering the new growth on it like i said plus the older leaves are pretty long themselves. Im happy also due to the fact i do better with houseplants that are more strong and harder to kill. Idk what it is but for some reason i tend to have plants die on me so i have been sticking to succulents and i have some golden pothus and regular pothus plants and now my new spider. I propogated a bunch of succulent leaves and gave many away for gifts and i have a bunch still and the main momma plant is still going strong. She lost most her leaves from my cat trying to jump in the window (it was my fault she did that as i left the blind up for a few minutes to long) that was the barrier for the two cats i have from jumping up there 😂... What a mess though lol. I am waiting for my mail package to arrive i ordered multiple grow lights for my indoor plants for the winter. I live in Maine and so its a need plus the plants grow better and faster as well as producing babies ❤😊 i cant wait. I ordered one large lamp light and then a bunch of small little usb type ones for my plants and babies that are throughout the house. easy for me to move plus they bend and stretch due to what they are made of and they are pretty putple lights ❤ i just love plants.......they make me happy. Im glad to be able to grow my collection again since we moved to a more permanent place to live ❤ plus plants are great for the air and they rake toxins out of the air we breathe plus they just look beautiful and fun to care for and "groom" them as i call it. My large golden pothus has some long limbs on her that i tack up around my wall and looks amazing i cant wait till she gets even larger with more shoots ❤
Much better advise than other videos. BIG QUESTION. I am struggling with my two spider getting all kinds of brown and yellow leaves. I do not use tap water. Maybe more light?
I love spider plants! I couldn't help but notice that you recommended misting the plant to raise humidity, but in your "4 myths about houseplants" you said that misting to raise humidity actually does nothing. Would love any clarification on this! As always, great video.
Love your videos! I've had my spider plant for some time and been reporting and trying to find a good steady location in my house for her to survive. Will she survive underneath a light where I keep my wine glasses but directly under that light?
I have a spider plant that just... grows. I literally forget to water it for weeks at a time in summer and it just keeps growing and putting out flowers and babies, it's insane. It's definition of "set it and forget it".
Sounds crazy but I like to water with old brewed coffee from my husbands work in my spider plants. I do it probably once or twice a month. My small spider plantlings have gone from 2” babies to 5” & strong little plants in just a short while. Also when I water my big momma this way she sprouts babies. Make sure it’s cold and has sat awhile 😉
It is probably not the smartest move because caffeine is a natural plant suppressant. It suppressed growth and root formation to give the coffee plant the edge
I’m guessing it may be the additives (such as fluoride) that evaporate in about 24 hours. Just my opinion with no experimentations on my part, I’m just suggesting that perhaps the coffee has nothing to do with it... it’s just better water because the additives have evaporated off by the time you use it. 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t know, but I’d use the city water & let that sit for 24 hours. Best Regards & happy growing! 😁
Older vid but hey still worth to comment. I have several of these around the house. They're all in those glass bowls with iron standers, roots are bare (no soil) after 3-5cm of soil and they stand in water most of the time. For some reason these guys like it very much... Haven't got root rot on any of them but maybe i just have a special veriaty or because the are so used to being grown in water. I get pups every other month or so on each plant 😂
Cats loveeeeeee spider plants. They ALWAYS chow down on them. One of mine likes my parlor palm too 🤷🏻♀️ I try to stick to non toxic, so they’re ok but the plants aren’t always ok

I think Kevin there was solely beautifying the spider plant and cutting the spider plant for aesthetics and they relatively grow quicker.
Very true, although this is also a matter of preference too.

Wow, that means a lot. Thank you!
Growing from seed is awesome! Good luck with your 'crop' of spiders :)
They root well in a flowerbed and the babies make great gifts!
They’re great added to summer flower baskets, but won’t survive the winter, in Canada at least!
I can’t believe my cat has been getting high this whole time
Mine, too! All she needed was a lava lamp and some sitar music the way she was acting...smh.
Soooo basically I'm my cats dealer... 😂😂
@@BarbraStephens lol made me chuckle!
If cats get high off of spider ivy, can humans get high off of it and is it toxic
🤣🤣
I was given one and I just ignored it. Gave it a hose every now and then. It grew big! So I repotted it. I’ve since bought the curly version too.
This is great advice. I remember my mom growing these in the 80s. I have two and one I've had for about 20 years. I can't kill these things! Lol!! I don't repot unless they're ready to bust open the pot and I water from the bottom.
Spider plant saved and looking really happy. Thank you
Thanks!
Wow, lucky you! And yes you can definitely divide it
I love in the South East of England.
I'm so happy finding your vlog! You are so awesome explaining almost everything. Thank you for your plant vlogs
Thank you!
I love how you said "Thanks" when I saved and Subscribed to your channel. Thank you!
This is super comprehensive! Learnt more in one video than I did watching a ton of other videos! Thank you so much!
How about curling/folding of leaves? What could be the problem? Thanks!
My cats are screaming PAR TAY...whoo hooo....
:P
😆😅😂🤣
Thank you, Epic Gardener! Your videos are so helpful eland easy to understand for a new gardener. From one didactic to another, you are an awesome teacher. I feel like you give your audience a lot of positive reinforcement, and your manner of teaching is both kind and honest. I watch dozens of your videos, but I’m finally commenting to thank you. So thank you for being you and for sharing your horticultural knowledge with all of us. 🙏🏽 🌱
I love my spider plant! they are approved by NASA i believe to be a air purifier.
that whole study was unfortunately debunked lol, i wish it was true tho...the air got purer with both an empty pot of dirt and a potted plant
You bet!
Mine is on the roof reiciving direct sunlight all day long and its just blooming and sending babys all over the place✨
Like ur videos. Helpful and informative for home gardeners like us. U explain every aspect well and in detail.
Give them each one!
First time viewing your channel, and I subscribed. Straight to the point, and very informative. Rare these days. Kudus!
I love the info you put out about plants and flowers! Keep up the good work and great vids
I rooted two pups in water. Then I transferred to small pitchers with no drainage holes- I did put small pebbles at bottom. The pitchers are ceramic so I couldn’t put drainage holes in them. Is this an instance where the rocks will be benefit- should I use sponge instead?
Thanks for all your wisdom in growing and transplanting a variety of plants.
I loved the way you guide us on how to take care of our Spider plants 🌱.
I had a spider plant a long time ago and I have mine outside and it loved it out there I've been looking for a spider plant for a long time
I bottom water my spider plants I have the all green one and the variegated one in one pot . It looks so cool !
Thanks....I have a HUGE spider plant. Thanks for the tips on keeping it healthy!
They grow outside in Southern California. I put cloth over in frost, but otherwise they live in very large pots and are watered with the hose, no special water. Some of mine are 20 years old. Easy plants :)
Thanks! Not as worried about repotting now that I've watched. :)
My fav is the Bonnie, love the curls!
Kevin, your videos are always great! I have a spider plant and used to find them to look dated, but I have grown to love it!
I had one spider plant that was so happy, and now I have them all over the house, but some are just not doing well. Thanks for the tips
I love that I'm watching this about 4 days after successfully killing mine
You say that as if it’s a good thing tho 😂
You made me laugh.
Good information. Spider plants have always been sort of a mystery to me! Thanks!
How long does it take for the spider plant to start throwing out babies?
Much better advise than other videos.
BIG QUESTION. I am struggling with my two spider getting all kinds of brown and yellow leaves. I do not use tap water. Maybe more light?
Thank you, I'm trying to revive my spider plant (I left it out whole winter)
The best thing I have found for mine (all 17 of them) is African violet soil, bottled water once a week and led grow lights.
I love spider plants! I couldn't help but notice that you recommended misting the plant to raise humidity, but in your "4 myths about houseplants" you said that misting to raise humidity actually does nothing. Would love any clarification on this! As always, great video.
Yeah, the updated recommendation is not to mist!
@@epicgardening I definitely apprecite your response. Thank you!
You didnt mention the curly spider plant. The most beautiful in my opinion!
Uggg I wish I watched this before I re-potted my spider plant😭
:(
@@epicgardening I am not able to get a good plants for me.
Would this plant be okay to keep in my bathroom? I’m looking for plants to have in that room because it gets good light.
Mine love coffee& water that sat overnight w the outer onion peels soaking in it! All natural is not only the cheapest but the best!
@@bmell1252 you're right, but they said the coffee was brewed and old so the caffeine is actually gone. Now its fertilizer 💕
Hello, Can You Help Please? I Have a Spider plant, It is Growing very well, But, I Think I Over-watered it in Tap water, On Watching Your Very Good Video, I Can Now See where I went wrong, is there anything I Can do to Get Rid of the Brown/Burnt Looking Tips?
Tia.
Answered all of my questions, so helpful! Thanks
Sorry sir, I know it could be a silly question, wich side of the cutting I have to put in the soil to propagate ? Thank you, very interesting
One of my favourite houseplants, genus Streptocarpus, really sounds like a disease! Beautiful flowering relative of the African Violet, likes similar care!
Do spider plants produce seeds? Or are they propagated naturally through runners?
I waited two years for pups. I finally put it in the right location, and had pups in less than a week.
Did you suggest spraying leaves with distilled water or plant solution to prevent darken tips?
Thank you so much for your video! I just pruned my two spider plants 🌱
