Yes. I had an empty plant saucer that had filled up with rain and I had just trimmed a couple of spider babies off the mother plant. I didn't have soil to plant them at the time, so I just set them in the saucer. Man, within two days those things were growing roots like crazy. So this is how I do all my spider plant propagating now. Great vids! I always love your experiments. Thank you and I hope wife and baby are doing well. 😊🌱🌿
You should try rooting in just water but with a see through container and with a dark one. I've heard a non see through container is better because roots prefer to grow in the dark and not get sunlight.
On the gulf coast we can put these in a reasonably sheltered spot outside and never worry about them again. My nearly 80 year old Mother plants them by grabbing ahold of something, kicking backwards with her heel to make a small depression, dropping them into the hole and pushing the soil back over with her toes. I'm not sure these plants know the meaning of "transplant shock" - the only ones I've ever seen die were ones cats dug up and chewed to pieces. I keep some(both green and variegated) in a pot with a small group of bonsai nandina along with 3 types of liriope as it gives an easy jungle look , and I've long since run out of friends that willingly take spiderlets, so now I guerrilla garden them into neighbor's yards lol.
Another great video :D My spider plants started to flower and have spiderlettes!! I have been waiting to harvest their seeds and experiment growing them like in your other video! They really just want to take over the world with how fast the spiderlettes grow O:< !
One week! Now that's a vigorous plant! Good experiment and good to know how the different methods will work depending on what are wanting to do with your propagations. Thank you!
Hey there. Great information. I’ve never tried propagation in soil before with the spiderlets. This seems to be the method of choice. I can’t wait to try. Thanks.
This is super helpful, thank you! I got a pretty small sized spidey from IKEA last year and mostly didn't bother her. I learned they liked to be root bound, so I just let her be. One year later, there's SO many babies/spiderettes!! How excited I was! I want to try water propagating (since the largest baby just fell off...well...after my cat kept pawing at it lol, but its roots are all intact and strong). Does the type of water mater? I usually use tap water for everything (I'm in Toronto, Canada) and never have issues, but I'm definitely curious. Thanks!! :)
I really liked your video. I needed to know this info before replanting all the babies off my plant. Thank you!! I've never had a green thumb, but I'm sure through your easy videos my plants may have a future lol. You have a new subscriber!🪴💚
Thank you so much for this video. I've just got some flowers on my spider plant and am hoping to grow both with seeds and the spiderletts. You make it look so easy and explain everything so well. Thanks :)
I found a spider plant on my walk today, plucked one of the spider-lets and plumped it in a pot. I then decided to do research and found your video, luckily the method I went with is technically correct
This plant adapts really well to dry/wet environment. My plants that grow in water make extensive thin roots, the ones in terracotta pots and coco coir/husks grow thick tuberous roots and can go a long time without water.
I had a big spider plant with tuberous roots and I tried to put it in water and it killed it 😭 they went all mushy and it just rotted my whole plant , the babies I started in water don't have those big fat roots and they are growing nicely in water ! So cool how they adapt to different environments
Thank you so much for this video!... i've been waiting ages to start making spider plant cuttings for some family and friends because i didn't have any rooting powder which i thought would be essential but after seeing the size of those taproots from the water method in this video im going to start them immediatly!!!! :D
Hey how tall are your lemon trees so far? I remembered your last year video over starting them just around the same time as I did and I have two that are 3 feet tall. They were accidentally planted together and grew up looking like one plant, but after repotting this May, found out it was two separate trees. I love how fuller it makes the pot seem.
They are doing quite poor, once i moved they didnt do well in the basement and it took me a while to get stuff setup, I have one tree but it is barely holding on to life
Aww that's a shame, but hey at least you got to try that out using store lemon seeds, may have been the best lemons or the worst, but it just costed a lemon
Cool video, I think I should get plants that produce babies. I'm losing plants and those would at least keep me in plants. I never thought of spider plant. Thank for the idea. Are there any other producers ?
Also, They can take filtered sunlight, no problem. If you have trees in your yard and get dappled sunlight, the spider plants will be happy as a clam. My neighbor gets a few hours of direct sunlight on her porch, and her spider plants (from my mother plant) do well. Beware low light places for your spider plant because the soil takes longer to dry out versus bright indirect sunlight. And wet soil for too long leads to root rot.
What temperature and light environment are your ‘just water’ plants being kept at during propagation? I’ve read mixed reviews both I. Warm environment and Direct light, and also heat to keep in a cool dark area. Awesome video thanks in advance.
no that will cause a lot of rot really quickly, ive tried stuff like this in the past, and the organics cause a lot of issues. maybe like pure perlite or leca or sphagnum
@@TechplantChannel I was wondering because I tried to propagate an African Violet leaf. It grew nice roots but it died the day after I put it in african violet soil.
I always propagate my spider plants shoots immediately in soil and always had 💯 success. So i don't risk the reporting shock from the water to the soil. I think the soil method is the best and the easiest.
@@TechplantChannel when the small shoots haven't yet formed the root bulbs, just put them in water for 24 or 48 hours (the contact with water will activate root cells formation) and then immediately put them in the soil, and the substrate must always be moist for at least the first 2 or 3 weeks.
Spider plants are the ultimate life form. Like I could point out that pothos is a poor test subject for propagation experiments due to a number of reasons, the other plan I could think of that grows that fast would be this one, which is even worse because it's hard to fail at propagating them, and once you have a rooted plant, it's even harder to kill. Literally the only thing that seems to really stress a spider plant is really low light, like in a windowless bathroom with the door open.
I will get 2 curly spider babies today after loooong search for it and super excited not to kill them . do you suggest that I just put them in soil (I always do a succesfull soil propagations) or start with water propagation first ?
Any ideas on why mine isn't giving me any baby spiders? i've divided it several times because it was growing so well, some in good soil, and the one in water (about a year) is very happy, but none of the them are flowering.
I'm probigating some babies from a mother that I seen not doing well, I guess where I got them from, they don't get much light, I've changed that they're doing well
You do NOT want to keep the soil damp! Slider plants flourish with benign neglect. Water it about once every 3 weeks. The soil needs to be dried out in between watering. My mom always had spider plants, and she forgot to water them often, and they did great. The reason they can go a month in between watering is because of the tuberous roots that hold moisture and nutrients in the roots. Baby spider plants need to sit in water a while to develop the root system so they can go longer in between watering once potted.
Hahaha man the spiderplants 😂😂 i killed one i potted it up too big, almost killed the next one i got but i managed to save it!! Cant wait til i get spiderletts😃
No, but maybe some fertilizer might make it sprout some or a smaller pot where it thinks it needs to spread elsewhere. Many plants reproduce when stressed
THANK YOU!!!!! You are the only one that ACTUALLY shows and talks about cutting!!!!
Probably the best video I've ever seen on propagating anything.
I love when we get to see different methods. Nice video, Matt!
Thank you thank you!

Thanks for sharing and for the kind words! Once they get a little taste of water they really go crazy with roots lol

A lot of vining plants let you take cuttings very easy i cant think of others like the spider plant tho. I will do some research
Wandering Jews are very easy to propagate :) one of my favorites

Under grow lights and about 70 degrees

i hope my curly spiderplant puts out babies soon so I can propagate them😊 thanks for the vid!
My Bonnie Spider Plant put out one baby the entire year. I'm hoping it puts out more but I'm getting very discouraged.
Good luck!!
you can try a diluted fertilizer, it might need some nutrients, otherwise increase the light
Great video! Another one I think even I can handle!😂
I can hook you up
I had to just root my spiderplants looked like a pie it was so rootboundfresh soil mix. Peralite worm castings growing like crazy
Question, how long should the roots be before putting in soil?
I think you undervalue fibrous root growth when deciding which method is best. the bark + sphag moss was by far the most effective
What do you mean by fibrous? like fuzzy? or strong?
Just got some from a neighbor! Hoping they work out!

Maybe the pot is too big? I noticed once it get sorta root bound it wants to spread via seed and the plantlets
Hummm ... I noticed the plant in the aroid mix has already developed tubers on the roots ... that's a good sign, right?
Cheers for the info. Have a like 👍
It's winter here. Is it OK to transfer the plant from rooting in water to the soil now?
do you have artificial lights? those would help, just dont overwater it if you arent getting a lot of light

I wonder if they could stay permanently rooted in water? Might try growing out of my aquarium
I think they probably could especially in an aquarium
