  • The follow-up to the game you probably don't remember is finally here and, even though it won't bring back non-existent memories, it will build new ones where you get to shoot stuff in a mech and also spend an unprecedented amount of time looking at a map. Those are qualities that normally don't go together, but now they do.

I wasn't aware Gunhead was a 1989 Japanese movie about battling a humanity destroying super computer in mechs. So... I'm gonna have to watch that now.
Game is on the giant humanity destroying supercomputer called STEAM: store.steampowered.com/app/704000/GUNHEAD/
    and PS5 apparently: store.playstation.com/en-us/concept/10008395

The fact that it "isn't the toughest roguelike on the block" is a selling point for me 😅

Some of these roguelikes can be a real pain. I think a lot of developers have adapted to that by putting in a bunch of meta progression so you can feel better about failing a thousand times. This one doesn't really have that, but thankfully doesn't really need it.

Good to see that after 6 years the game didn't turn out half baked. It seems like they kept a lot of what made cryptark unique, especially in the strategy element. I'm sad to see the economy go because I loved the loop of nearly getting yourself killed over a juicy mission and then splurging on the mission after

It is a bit of a miss, but I see the path they wanted to take. Without ammo refills in the map, you spend a lot more time juggling weapons that have fairly distinct applications. So there's always this feeling of needing to save your best weapons like Breath of the Wild because you don't know if or when you'll find more of them. You also have to add that factor into your planning so now weapons and power ups become a reason to take a detour to a room rather than just destroying a system.

That explains why the previous game was free recently!

I was going to mention that, but I didn't want to get anyone excited for something that's already over. You'd think they'd do it at the time of Gunhead's launch rather than three weeks before, but I'm no marketing genius, so maybe there's a reason.
