  • This is how I replace the prop saver on the motor shaft of these 400mm planes. Let me know if you have another way. Main thing to note is that the shaft has a flat on it, and the prop saver must line up in order to go on fully. Otherwise it sticks out too much and looks unsightly. Still flies though. Be careful when doing this as you may pull the mechanism out of the foam fuselage.
    I use pointy pliars myself and find extracting from the front always works the easiest. Still support the motor all the way or it might rip out of the foam. Then you have gluing to do.
    If you have a model other than the Mustang, Trojan or Corsair you should have a hatch underneath to enable you to get to the motor and hold it with your finger or thumb for support.
    Do this at your own risk.

    To remove old saver without damaging aircraft just snip the plastic away in little bites with nail clippers or small snips, your not gonna need it.
    Also the shaft should only protrude a little bit on the new one, if you push it on too far, the propellers break rather than pop off.
    ( There is a 3d print for a 2 blade prop on thingyverse but it has a course pitch, if you go to full speed, it can trigger the telemetry to switch to safe speed and make the transmitter beep )

    Hi there. Me again. Useful subject this. Anyone owning a mini warbird for long enough will definitely have to replace one of these.
    This part relies on its elasticity to function which relaxes over time so I'd also try storing your mini warbirds with the prop's removed to get the absolute maximum time between replacements. 😉👍
    For removal, I start by using flat long nosed pliers, similar to you, but place one prong behind the plastic part and place the other on the end of the metal spindle. That way, when closing the prongs of the pliers, it pushes against the pin instead of pulling against the glue gearbox mounting.
    I push replacement part back on as you describe, whilst trying to support from back of motor, to reduce stress on the glued gearbox mounting.
    Hope this is helpful!? Andy

    Might be an idea to heat up the replacement saver a little, like by putting it in (not too) hot water so the plastic expands a little and less force is needed to push it on the axle? To avoid putting too much stress on the motor axle and mount when pushing it on

    • @Calvertfilm

      Maybe if some people need to but I've found they go on fine as long as they are lined up with that flat side. Cheers for your suggestion though.

    I had the same problem with my Volantex Trainstar. It's much easier to just glue the prop on. The prop saver is a prop loser. 😁

    Thanks for advice on the shaft flat orientation. Looks as if the stresses threaten to break the gear mount, or the shaft retainer. Do you think warming the metal shaft with a temp. controlled solder iron tip, or temp controlled hot air nozzle would help before applying pressure (before removal and before pressing on the replacement)? The melting point of polypropylene is about 300F and nylon is 500F, so maybe about 200F on the shaft. What do you think?

    • @Calvertfilm
      @Calvertfilm  Год назад

      I must admit I have no idea about that. You could give it a go and let us all know. But generally most people manage to remove these ok normally.

    • @robertheim352
      @robertheim352 Год назад

      @@Calvertfilm I set my smallest nozzle at 200C and aimed at the shaft for minute of air. It slid off easily. A little heat also helped to place it and seat it. I think bringing the plastic up in temp was the magic (not the shaft). Orienting the flats is difficult. My old prop saver had a small crack in it, props came off while in flight. Good idea of yours to stress test at full throttle!

    My blade fits lose from factory doesn't fall off just a little wobbly is that normal with these cheaper planes or should I return it and get another

    • @Calvertfilm
      @Calvertfilm  10 месяцев назад

      They should be held quite firmly. Just run it up full power and see if it holds. If not try another prop. If still no good then the prop saver (the bit that goes on the motor shaft) may need replacing, then it might be worth returning it or changing the prop saver over if you can - it is a bit tricky. I have a video on here about that operation.

    Any tips on these for when you have a hard landing and how the angle of the motor is slightly off?

    • @Calvertfilm
      @Calvertfilm  Месяц назад

      I just gently persuade it back into position. If that fails and it's still loose, it may need the fuselage opening up using a craft knife, and then the motor put back into position again and use a little UHU style glue to hold it and re-glue the fuselage.

    Hi sir! In my Eachine RC BF-109, the small metal rod which the propeller saver is attached to collapses at the slightest contact. Is there a solution for this?

    • @Calvertfilm

      Not that I know of. Perhaps someone else knows? It should be fixed solid to the motor. Maybe you need a new motor?

    Hi.. Does anyone know what propellers can be used instead of the original ones? I increased the weight of the aircraft to about 78 grams by adding an FPV camera. but the flood motor pulls only about 66 grams. do you think it would be possible to increase the thrust only by using a larger, more suitable propeller. Thank you and sorry for my bad english 😉

    • @Calvertfilm
      @Calvertfilm  10 месяцев назад

      I haven't tried changing the prop. Maybe someone else has. XJet added FPV to his plane, so not sure if he changed the prop. Some people have replaced the motor with a brushless too.

    • @Ambobeat
      @Ambobeat 10 месяцев назад

      @@Calvertfilm a small FPV camera or a small hdd camera with a microSD card and a second battery, about 10 grams in total - 400mm mustang will handle it just fine. I will try to add a small servo and a Wireless Head Tracker receiver for turning the camera, which is another 7 grams more, and I need the plane to have a bit more thrust. I know about brushless engine modifications, but I'm not good enough to do it. Today I managed to break the nose on the 560mm Xk A280 Rc P51 - so I'm a complete beginner. I watched your videos until lunch and got the urge to fly, and since the small mustang is currently being disassembled, I tried to fly with a bigger one - my fault. So I will try to find a slightly larger propeller, maybe 14-15 cm, with an inner hole of about 3.5 mm. Thank you for your reply. I can see enthusiasm and childish playfulness in your eyes - many people miss that. Even my wife does not understand when I fly in the park with a plane like a small child 😉

Ho usato quello in dotazione con la scatola ma non aggancia l'elica. Puoi mettere i link del tuo prop saver. Grazie ancora
