Love it....Could watch this all day...No fast forwarding...lets all enjoy every bit....Am just amazed at the glide ratio of these modern hang gliders! around 6mins in it was just cool watching you glide over the road so close! The odd thing was, when you were looking around a few times, it actually reminded me of a few videos I've seen when they attach cameras to eagles backs, it just reminded me of how the eagle does basically the same thing, flying (gliding) like a bird..amazing feeling...i envy you! Low, lower, lowest. No risk no fun. At minimum 2 areas are without any risk management. A little downwash and you would hang in the trees. But I am only one of the first 250 hang gliding pilots in Germany. Last flight I did with 66 years. I wish you all this wonderful years, but fly with a brain. Air can have surprising conditions, and a low level flight over long distance increase your risk not linear with distance. But.. up to you. And great to see. Very nice clip. Good luck!
retired pilot ( UP Gemini 164).. I have to agree with your comments.." to low over forest" hit sink and well you know.. ended well though.. great vid :0)
Friend, this video is extraordinary ! You had a lot of courage going through such low valleys. You seemed to know the way well. The condition looked excellent, you performed amazingly. I was excited about your flight, congratulations !
Man I miss living in that part of the world. I was stationed in Stuttgart ‘89 - ‘93. Spent all my off time between Stuttgart south: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and northern Italy. IMHO the most strikingly beautiful part of planet Earth. Nowhere else comes close.
@@cloudstreets1396 shame , if you bothered to ascertain re the parameters regarding the subjective comparison before your piggish comment , perhaps then you would of understood better as to what I was categorising the ATOS to .
Beautiful geography, beautiful weather, awesome flight. Only thing ‘scary’ is that apparently, you went through a pass in the mountain range and onto the Lee side of the mountains for the final glide. I don’t see any tree movement so apparently, winds were light and/or variable this day. Fantastic video- thank you ♠️
Absolutely amazing footage from a former Hanglider pilot , Seed Wings .I don't understand where you found all that lift well done . Wish I could have seen the glider you were flying .
No doubt you're an excellent pilot with an excellent wing. Still, nobody can predict conditions 100% and that is the danger. All that had to happen during this final was you encountering a bit more sink and you would have had to land out. We've all had flights where we were fortunate things went well but could easily have gone less than well. You fessing up to your hairline decissions here and admitting next time will be different speaks oceans about your maturity.
This must be called swift flying..Ground effect phenomena in suitable fluid weather conditin with an almost perfect gliding wing and good pilot input.wow..
After some slope landing experience I feel more relaxed watching such a glides but I felt nervous anyway :) Greeting from Ukraine. Hope you like the pod ;)
Hey there, yes I do like the pod very much. Only during slow flying it's a little long and therefor far out in the front. A mount with the pivot point behind and above the speedbar might be an option? But aside from that it's a very nice pod - thanks.
I always enjoy watching a pilot fly well and make bold but well-reasoned flight decisions. Thank you for posting the flight. I’m curious if that was the goal for the flight and whether all those other Rigid wings made the same XC flight. Beautiful countryside by the way.
@@HangmanMo , honestly I could have sworn that you had an engine attached to your wing. I don’t know if it was normal video speed after the fast forwards. Whatever you did with the video, I must say that your handling of this flight is boss level. You make me want to fly too. The scenery is amazing; your flight control beyond amazing! Well done, sir!
WOW I use to fly back in the 70's and 80's before we moved on to ultralights, these gliders today are like rocket-ships compared to the gliders back then, they look like they have an engine on them. What is the L over D on that wing it has to be 30 to 1 or more.
As I wrote in my description, I think I should've landed. There is definitive a moment where I wouldn't have reached anything but trees, if I had hit some bad sink. As for the sweater - you're probably right. But when it's completely blown up from the airflow, it's not too bad I guess.
No VG on an ATOS which is a rigid wing with a fixed sweep angle. The pilot is using the cord to adjust the wing flaps (the black portion of the trailing edge behind the red stripe).
I see constant adjustments of the flap/tail trim cord. Are you positioning them according to desired glide ratio, sink rate, or trim speed? Very entertaining video by the way!
Do your massive set of stones not reduce the glide ratio? Jeez man, I was on edge watching that! I’ll stick to the ridge soaring with the landing field in close range 😮💨
If he slipped over to the leeward side his life could have been "interesting" What's the l/d on that? Ridge soaring is incredibly exhilarating, but I've only flown conventional gilders.
If you've flown conventional gliders this is no comparison when it comes to glide ratio. It depends very much on the fuselage (my body) and how the pilot is positioned against the wind (angle of attack, slip, ...). In the end, truth is something between 1/14 - 1/18. The glide here was very good because of the line and the conditions, not the l/d. But it's so much fun 🙂.
What kind of a tailwind did you have? Your ground speed was phenomenal and glide ratio easily 1 to 30 if not more. Was it really Lee side because it seemed tail wind all the way and for landing you turned 180 to face the wind :)
The first 2 minutes of this video the wind comes from the left, facing the ridge I'm riding. It's a mixture of soaring and thermal updraft, therefor my glide ratio is very good. After that I transition to the other side of this ridge. This is, where my glide ratio gets below normal. At 07:10 you can see, that I'm entering another valley. The wind situation here is different and the wind is mainly from the right side of the valley. On final though, the wind is very light but straight from the right in the direction of flight. You can find the track here: de.dhv-xc.de/flight/1556182
@@HangmanMo I saw the time markers and read the description too. Only felt or seemed like real good tail wind that you were covering so much distance and hardly any turbulence either.
I started on a Perfex (single surface floater) and flew that quite some time. After that I went through some different Ikarus gliders which I was lucky to borrow from a friend of mine. Mostly I flew the Spirit- in that time. I did this for 1 or 2 seasons and started to fly the Aeros Combat. I crashed my Combat (aerobatics) after approx. 5 years and started flying this A-I-R Atos VR. I'm quite happy with that for now, even though I'm thinking about getting a newer (used) one.
Your instruments certainly indicated that it was passing with good finesse, but yes, it was scary and not safe at all with no way to really escape for a very long time!!! I also did the same thing and worse as it was a competition..... But although I can't validate it, sometimes it's a matter of "balls sizes" 🤣😱🤯, when it passes you can always put it on youtube, but anyway, it's so easy to say (rightfully) you shouldn't have done it.
What was scary about that !! People trying to attract views with pathetically inaccurate video titles. Thumbs down from me in the hope it upsets the sad authors RUclips algorithms. Obviously that is what the precocious prat cares about otherwise why lie !!!!
He’s not lying. This is a helpful and useful video that shows the possible consequences of giving into “gotta make the LZ”-itis. The one section above the pass where he’s just a few feet above a road and close-in tall trees shows poor judgment. One little pocket of sink right there and he has no chance to make a safe landing. He was lucky and he knows it. A good glider pilot never risks putting him/herself in a situation where they need to have everything work out perfectly or they’ll have a dangerous sudden landing or crash. The corollary problem with an event like this is when a pilot learns (erroneously) that close calls will always work out in their favor. Always give yourself margin in the air for that day when the unpredictable bites you in the butt.
@@skypix777 As a retired flexwing and rigid wing pilot of 32 year standing I agree totally with your review. Competition encourages pilots to take on higher risks than we would entertain when free flying for fun. My heart was in my mouth a few times whilst watching this video but the gods favoured the pilot on this day, assisted by the glide ratio of his Atos. I have witnessed one competition pilot fly into the lee of a mountain and got pushed right into the ground in less than a minute, he did not survive. I wish you all many safe landings.
Unfortunately you have little context to compare this video to when you say it is not scary. Perhaps you compare it to wingsuit flying or paraglider malfunctions, but in the context of continuing a hang glider flight into regions where safe landings may be compromised, the scary part is that the pilot has to rely on slim margins to avoid the trees ... or worse. It is an excellent video and appropriately named for those pilots who understand the sport and the situation.

Excellent video. I'll still stick to my bag wing due to ease and mobility, but love to see the performance of a rigid wing.
Does "bag wing" mean paraglider? Not a pilot. Yes,I googled it,but came up empty.
Amazing glide ratio
Absolutely beautiful landing well done nice flight
the glide ratio on that ATOS is insane , great vid and great flight
20:1 is not insane. That’s pretty horrible actually. A Schweizer 2:33 has a 23:1 glide and that thing is a complete pig.
