ok...this has become one of my favorite anime movies, if not my favorite anime movie. i would protect nishimiya and ishida with my life.
aside from the extremely sad depiction of bullying and the beautiful animation, i thought it did a great job at showing what social anxiety and depression is like. it felt almost cathartic to watch this movie and see the characters, especially ishida, come to self-acceptance at the end - i really feel for him and can relate to those feelings of anxiety taking over throughout the movie.
i've gotten so many comments from people saying how this movie is pure sadness, and that it is soul-crushing. while i agree there are sad moments (the bullying, suicide attempt, etc.) i honestly felt that after finishing this movie, it was more uplifting than anything. the ending filled me with hope - that things will be okay no matter what hardships come at me. there is a light at the end of the tunnel. and i'm so happy it ended that way. thank you for suggesting this to me, everyone!
(also i am sorry (but not really) for the amount of times i say "REALLY?????" in this reaction LMAO that bullying made me furious than anything 😭)

Kawai (the blonde girl) was a passive bully. She'd do things like the singing part, where she started to breath and open her mouth, (which she knew Shoko was watching her) to make Shoko think she was singing, thus getting her in trouble and laughed at. She's also completely only concerned about herself and how she "comes off" to everyone else. With Ueno she at least has the guts to admit that she's terrible. Kawai pretends to be the innocent perfect flower until the end.

One of the most frustratingly realistic parts of the bullying scenes is that there's a lot of subtext there that Shoya already liked Shoko back then but was basically lashing out because he was immature and the peer pressure.
You even see him looking at his hands and thinking about when the sign language teacher comes in until Ueno starts complaining.

To answer the question, yes Kawai was part of it even if a little bit besides not doing anything at 3:26 if you pay attention Kawai actually pretends to start singing to mess with Shoko and you see Shoko look at her. She acts the hero by saying follow me and then plays the Victim to get sympathy
Because of her playing victim some people have described her worse then Ueno
Kawai's victim BS is more shown in the Manga but it's still present in the movie.

What I love so much about the story, is how realistic it involves in the word CHANGE, some people change for the better, some change for the worst, some don't ever change and some has you wondering did they change or not? an example is naoka's character we can't really say she's changed or not, just like in real life

It's about accepting yourself for who you are, regardless of many, many of your faults about yourself that deep down you know all too well, and to be able to live guilt-free regardless and keep going strong, it's immensely powerful message and it's only fair to emphasize it as such and to separate it as opposed to just 'love' which may potentially even go into the box of 'cheesy teen romance' or what not. I'm impressed you stayed fairly composed. I cried again just watching it here. The main moment for me is Nishimiya's apology to Ishida's mother at the hospital. The painful thing is that Nishimiya already believed she was the one ruining everything socially, but the feeling would presumably grow 100 times stronger realising she couldn't even end her own life without almost causing Ishida to lose his (reinforcing the belief that SHE'S the troublemaker). The deep remorse she shows when apologising hits so hard - you wanna just hug her and let her know none of it was her fault. And yeah, the bullying does make the blood boil. I think it highlights the long-lasting affects that bullying and ostracization can have on people, and the role of forgiveness.

    • @EitherProductions
      @EitherProductions 2 года назад +7

To me, it seems that the more one experienced bullying as a kid or feels the guilt of having been a bully, the harder this movie hits. This was one of only two movies to ever make me openly weep (most sad movies/scenes barely affect me), largely because I strongly identified with Ishida's shutting off from others and Nishimiya's habit of blaming herself for everything and hating herself, which happened to me in middle school due to bullying. My mom barely had a reaction because she never went through that kind of stuff and wondered why it's my favorite movie. Everyone has different emotional triggers.

    • @RoaringTide
      @RoaringTide 2 года назад +3

@@EitherProductions Absolutely. I imagine that a person who has any kind of connection to bullying would be unlikely to watch this movie without having some sort of reaction. For myself, I was fortunate in that I made friends quite easily growing up, and I was never really subject to any bullying. I still cry at sad media with little resistance though. I guess raw empathy takes over, and I don't have any unhealthy reservations about crying as a dude or anything like that.

If we're talking about trash tier friends, Kawai is at the bottom, below Ueno. That's because Ueno is fully aware of everything, but also decides to change, even though her stubborn and passionate personality makes it difficult.
Ueno is a awkward girl who is both passionate and stubborn. You can see that there are signs that she likes Ishida, and will go along with anything he does; when he was nice to Shoko, so was she, as he started to bully her, so did she.
RE: The Day at the Park - She was hoping to reconcile Ishida with Shimada, because she felt responsible for being the first person the trash teacher picked to reveal Ishida's bullying, and how that opened the floodgate for everyone to scapegoat and destroy Ishida. Shimada also feels a lot of shame and doesn't feel worthy of any reconciliation; out of consideration for Ishida (and himself, of course) he doesn't dare approach Ishida, even though it's obvious Ueno is still in touch with him and has talked to him about reconciling with Ishida. Ueno projects her own self-hate onto Shoko, because she was the catalyst of Ishida's eventual ostracization and bullying.
Kawai, on the other hand, was always a by-stander, had never told people to stop the bullying and is always the "good person" every Japanese person thinks of themselves. Keep out of trouble, stay out of people's business, but abscond all responsibility. Kawaii is the only character that DOESN'T evolve and change. She is the scathing commentary on Japanese culture and its tolerance for many dysfunctional things, such as women's rights, and bullying. using tears to deflect criticism, causing trouble by revealing Ishida's past to his new friends. To absolve her guilt, she thinks of buying her way out with the cranes. It ios the easy way out, as opposed to Ueno, who even begins to learn sign language.
The whole movie is all about how bullying is a communal crime and how everyone can be victims of it, even as the bully, or bystander.

I still cry every time I watch it, I really relate to this movie. I'd take Ueno any day rather than Kawai. Ueno is real. She likes Ishida and she felt bad for turning against him when things went south during their elementary days, this can be seen in the Ferris wheel scene although she tried to put the blame on Nishimiya. She was also trying to help Nishimiya at first but she turned on her too because it was kind of getting hard for her. She was getting protective over Ishida especially on the bridge. She wants him to reconcile with his old friends and she also is jealous of Nishimiya. Later on, she acknowledges her mistakes. she stayed true to herself and she was willing to learn sign language. Unlike Kawai who did bully Nishimiya and acts like the victim every time a problem comes. She laughed at Nishimiya, she tricked her into sining early then act all good by trying to "correct" her when she was the reason Nishimiya sang early in the first place. Kawai didn't even apologize for what she did, instead she acts like she did nothing. Man I hate people like her. Ueno I can deal with but Kawai is just a different type of bs. The classroom scene where she singled out Ishida really ticked me off like she didn't bully Nishimiya too.

This movie helped me realize that I can move forward and that the friends I do have truly do care about me. I was at my lowest when watching it, but it helped me know that I wasn’t alone and that I can forgive myself. This is by far my favorite movie of all time just because it’s the only movie that truly changed my life completely. Everytime I see that ending I just lose it and bawl my eyes out. If any of you believe that you aren’t deserving of love, please know that you are loved by someone and that you can change or have changed for the better. Because y'know, there's ones where they say if you're gay and trans you're gonna burn, or the priests m0lest children and instead of y'know, kicking them out or ARRESTING THEM, they just send them to new churches to harm more children. Let's not forget the priest who said "it's okay to m0lest little boys, just not girls". You gotta at LEAST warn people of these horrid things before you recommend it as a "safe space". Church can be literally one of the most dangerous places for some people, and kids obviously.

I was bullied too, at the end of elementary school, but I finally realized that either I would face such situations, or I would be an eternal coward, even thinking about suicide. At the end of my last school year one of the boys who was harassing me came to make fun of me, I retorted making him feel ashamed, his own peers laughed at him, he came up and we got into the fight. There the bullying ended, because in any similar situation, losing or winning the fight, I would do the same, and the boys saw it in my eyes. Some even tried to be my friends after the occasion. If you don't confront your fears, there will be no rest. I hope you get over yours.

People do get better. This movie hits due to my history with being on the receiving end of torment from bullies from 6th grade to high school from kids and teachers. It takes a long time to forgive. It's important to reach it for people to heal. But along the way, as many of the participants got older, they matured and tried to atone. One even telling me they had a substance abuse problem, and they took their anger in the world out on me. I forgave him the moment he asked for it. This is just an amazing reminder that as long as we draw breath, we can be better for ourselves, and those around us.

As someone thats been bullied heavily in Middle School and now at 27 still getting over a lot of that, this film was incredible at depicting depression, anxiety and actually showing what that can do to a person. This movie is absolutely among my top 3 animated films. Might even bein in my top 5 movies of all time. Such a heartbreaking, sad and triumphant story. The ending never fails to send chills down my spine. The boi actually did it.

The X on the faces is something that hits close to me, when you are hated/bullied/betrayed by so many you dont put effort into remembering faces and this applies to people you never met because you think they will just hurt you too, your memory becomes a blur as to what they looked like. You really only remember the faces of people who you enjoyed being with or people who were kind, anyone else repels you because you assume the worst and your fear takes over. Great visual representation of that feeling in this movie.

I gotta be honest. I never hated Ishida the entire movie, even in the beginning. As someone who most would likely consider an asshole, I see things from a perspective I think many people wouldn't. It didn't seem like he originally going to be mean to her, and only started bullying once the class started turning on her. Plus, once I saw the first time he bullied her, I instantly understood why he was going to jump off the bridge. I just don't have it in me to hate someone who I know is so destroyed by guilt over their actions that they resort to that. Peer pressure ruined his life, and got thrown to the wolves by his so called friends who were doing the same. There is no room in my heart for hatred towards such a person. Pity perhaps, but not hatred.

I think Ueno is one of the most interesting characters in the movie. She is a perfect contra mirror to Kawai, and most people don't like her on their first watch. But the more you rewatch the movie, you realice that she never lies. She is absolutely, brutaly, honest. That's for example why she doesn't judge Shoja alone for the past, and instead says they are all equaly to blame. She was also the first one to try "open up" to Shoko by helping her out with notes in class, which in return lead to her own grades suffering, which is probably why she judges Shoko so hard for never trying to open up herselfe (sticking to the note book instead of trying to practice talking, hidding behind smiles and "I'm sorrys" instead of showing how she really feels, etc.) Uenos brutal honesty is what makes her the exact oposite of Kawai, who is all about lies and trying to seem inosent. Kawai even lies to herselfe by claiming she was completely inosent back than, completely denying that she laughed along, watched and covered for the others. The oposite of Ueno, who does put a lot of blame on Shoko for beeing the catalist/starting point, but also realices that she herselfe is to blame as well for everything ending up the way it did. Kawai deflects blame and acountability, while Ueno accepts it and thinks they are all to blame.
I think someone could probably write an entire character study about Kawai and Ueno beeing oposites! xD
Hell, even their color paletes are basically oposites! Kawai has light hair and eyes, while Ueno has dark hair and eyes!

This movie is one of my favorites. I watched it for the first time last year with my little sister. I’m almost done with college, and she was in 8th grade, but bc I was off at college most of the time and she lived with our mother (our parents are divorced) I hadn’t seen her much in a few years. We had been super close before our parents separated, as best of friends as 2 kids 10 years apart in age could be. Watching this with her, and seeing her watch it, and talk about it, and about how she was going through some of the same feelings really destroyed me, and made me feel like a failure of an older brother, but it also helped me reconnect with her in a way I didn’t think was possible anymore. It makes you realize the small moments, like sitting and watching a random anime movie with your sister, are really the big moments. I think this movie not only saved my sister, but it helped save me in ways I never would have expected. Truly a work of art.

My favorite moment is definitely the ending. It's already so difficult letting go of everything that you've made yourself believe in for the longest time but to pair it with everything else that Ishida experienced. This was truly such a heartwarming scene and just the way they did it really. I cried like a baby during that scene! Plus the parallels between Shoko and Shoya is so profound, down to the very minute actions, they have something in common. Great reaction like always, Alana!

Hurting others, experiencing shame and regret for it, and learning to live with and forgive your own mistakes is something all people experience as they grow into adulthood. We see bits of ourselves in most or all the characters which really increases the audiences empathy for them.

I now realized that ishida only started bullying once when people started to target Shoko. I think he was interested in her that’s why he was confused and interested by sign language and was shocked when she revealed that she’s deaf. He also realized she was trying to say something but he was weirded out. I feel like he only started bullying her because he knew people made fun of shoko and if he tries be friends with her he would get made fun of so he decided to bully more and more ad everyone would laugh at him. He also realized Shimada left because she was getting made fun of do to being friends with shoko making him even more worry about being nice to her. I think it started with ueno saying that they had another sho he was kinda scared that people would start to make fun of him just cause the association. He was always the scape goat. He would do it in public while the others did it in private. He was the poster boy, the scapegoat in case they found out that’s why they never stopped him cause he was doing what they wanted to do but knew the repercussions. I don’t know how I keep finding new stuff about this movie despite watching it 5 times

God I really can’t watch this without crying, even a reaction video. Especially the scene where Shoko is asking for forgiveness, but also the scenes leading up to the fireworks.
Seeing Ishida laughing too hard at a movie, constantly suggesting plans, always smiling and stuff…it doesn’t explicitly say it, but I’m pretty sure I know that feeling well.
If anyone you know is struggling with mental health, and they suddenly start being really cheerful and upbeat out of nowhere, then keep a close eye on them. It might be a sign that they’re planning to do something. That feeling of resolve, of finally deciding to take action can be intoxicating and powerful. If you see that, do Not let this person out of your sight if you can avoid it. Ask them tough questions, and get them help.

  • @reignmans

Here comes a wall of text (you could call it a thesis lmao). Tread carefully. Its about Ueno and for anyone hating her with a fiery passion.
I understand that many of you may hate Ueno and that is fine but it seems most have forgotten In grade school the first person to reach out to Nishimiya when she arrives was Ueno, this is made abundantly clear where she asks for Nishimiya’s notebook while everyone else was still shocked that she was deaf.
During lessons, Nishimiya would ask what the teacher says because the Teacher never changed the way he taught to account for her disability, so Ueno took it upon herself to explain to Nishimiya what he was saying causing her to miss parts of the lessons as well. As time goes on, the Nishimiya situation is constantly complained about amongst her peers because sacrifices have to be made in order to compensate for her and integrate her into their school life, Ueno attempts to get this through to Nishimiya in her notebook when they are practicing choir (by saying just mouth the words) but they lose the choir competition as a result because it just doesn’t sound as good anymore, and Nishimiya can only apologize.
PLEASE don’t forget these are kids, they lack the maturity and reasoning of someone of our age, so instead of seeing Nishimiya as someone who needs additional help, they see her as a burden that’s costing them everything. The last straw for Ueno was being told that she’d have to learn sign language to better communicate with Nishimiya, where she states it’s easier for her to write to her, and the assistant teacher says “well it’s easier for Nishimiya to do ASL”, not accounting for how Ueno feels and instead, again, accommodating for Nishimiya’s deficiency (and it’s made evident this what the impression the author wanted to give off when they show the reading scene where Ueno is told to stop reading, yet Nishimiya who can’t correctly pronounce the words, is allowed to continue).
AS A KID this stings because nobody is taking to account HOW YOU feel. Ueno explains this feeling to her on the Ferris Wheel and she says she doesn’t want to be friends and can’t bring herself to forgive her, which is understandable because to Ueno, Nishimiya only burdens those she interacts with, which isn’t exactly true (from our omniscient eyes) but isn’t exactly false either (from what she’s seen). Ueno tells her it’s okay to hate her because Ueno hates her too and they can act as if they tolerate each other for the group (for Ishida’s sake obviously, more obvious in the manga) but Nishimiya says “I don’t hate you, I hate myself ” this statement causes Ueno to erupt because she feels she’s not listening to her and she’s not trying to understand her even to this day, all Nishimiya can do is “apologize” ...this moment was Ueno trying to compromise for Ishida in her own way without exactly lying to herself about how she feels about Nishimiya, but Nishimiya, In Ueno’s eyes, rejects this.
We, the Audience, know Nishimiya harbors no ill will against her. Ueno loves Ishida, this has been obvious since they were kids, and it’s still the case when they’ve grown up, she regrets not standing up for him when everyone else used him as a scapegoat. She is doing everything in her power to get him to forgive her and accept her just as Ishida is doing the SAME for Nishimiya. To Ueno, Nishimiya coming to the school ruined everything, the friendship with Ishida and the chemistry within the classroom as a whole. In her eyes, she’s only seen Nishimiya as being a burden and when Ishida almost loses his life to save Nishimiya, she is justifiably upset. You seriously cannot tell me she had no right to be when the guy she cares for and loves nearly kills himself in order to save the girl who she sees as being only a burden for him, in her eyes this reinforces her belief. She confronts her at the hospital and attacks her, letting out all her frustrations and anger on Nishimiya and also her mom when she shows to defend her. The only person who can understand how Ueno feels in this scene is Nishimiya’s sister. THIS is why Nishimiya’s sister doesn’t stop Ueno, and does anyone give her shit for it? No.
I really don’t see how anyone says her arc is bad because if you pay any attention to the supporting characters, you may not like it, but you can understand where she’s coming from. She doesn’t have to have a redeeming character arc for her character arc to be successful. because a character doesn’t react the way you think you would doesn’t make them inherently bad characters. She says back then she couldn’t understand her as a person but she was doing the BEST SHE COULD, but Nishimiya couldn’t understand her either, and so she(Ueno) intentionally started to badmouth her in order to give the hint to stay away, but Nishimiya doesn’t take up on it. (Again I feel the Manga explains this better and shows the bullying wasn’t as immediate as the movie let’s on) She never denies her part of her bullying after they grow up, in fact she takes responsibility for it as opposed to back when they were kids, this is growth from her as a kid because she let Ishida take the fall alone. I think that it’s entirely the teachers/adults fault for forcing the kids into a situation they were not prepared for, they weren’t equipped with knowledge and maturity they have now.
Everyone has their own way of projecting emotions and their frustrations, I’m not saying she was in the right for attacking Nishimiya because she wasn’t, Nishimiya did not mean for Ishida to be hurt, BUT I’m saying I can understand where Ueno is coming from having almost lost someone she truly cares for and loves. The same way people say Uenos “development was weak” can be said for Nishimiya. She’s still apologetic and despite everyone’s attempts to make her see the good in the world and in herself she still tries to kill herself, is that fair to state? Of course not, because we can understand her and where she’s coming from, we know depression and self-loathing can’t be remedied with something from a first aid kit. It takes time and it takes self reflection and even that, sometimes isn’t enough. Is her anger misplaced, in our eyes maybe, but in her eyes no, it’s all about perspective.
I don’t think it’s fair to say Ueno’s reaction was unjustified either, because at this point, Ishida hasn’t woken up yet and is in a coma, she’s again grieving in the sense you would for loss, and emotions are at an all time high for everyone. Her perspective is “you did this to him and he’s dead and you aren’t”. She doesn’t know if he’s waking up or not, she just knows Nishimiya was there and Nishimiya was trying to kill herself and Ishida stopped her, and now he’s badly hurt. This enforces her stance that Nishimiya only brings misery. I think we can all agree with the sentiment of “actions have consequences” Nishimiya actions resulted in Ishida being hurt. Did she mean for it happen? Of course not. But it did, and Ueno (who’s already shown to be violent) is projecting her anger on who she sees is the source. I do advise reading the manga because the Manga protrays this soo much better and gives soo much more details in this scene. In conclusion, I really appreciate the take on Ueno’s character and she gets soo much hate for being human.

I, for one, agree about Ueno's character development being handled fluidly. Her character (personality/attitude) is one of the most "human" in the entirety of the show.
For Ishida, the reason for his actions in highschool was driven by guilt, mostly (of course there's also for the sake of the plot to progress). Ueno's was the same but more natural in a sense. She admits to herself and openly shows to the people surrounding them that she does harbor some unpleasant feelings towards her and that is fine. That's how reality for them came to be, a series of misundertandings and unfortunate events, I guess. Maybe I am also biased towards Ueno as a character is because I have seen first-hand people trying to mend relationships like that. Instead of being a totally different character when they meet each other again, like how Ishida was this very humble and kind persona once he meets with Nishimiya again, Ueno was not that different, albeit still a bully, but slowly transitioned to that of person more tolerant (and eventually being actual friends).
The hate towards her from the us audience is understandable because we've seen things unfold from a "god's perspective" but as you've said, everything is about perspective. Kawai on the other hand was a more horrid character that was relatively unchanged until the end which I think deserves more hate. I read the manga years ago but even the teacher was just bad which could've been highlighted as well but we get what we're given and that's alright.
      Here's a W for that take, comrade.

True , many kids have this nature but they lose it while growing up, she just goes over and beyond. Atleast with Ueno she doesn't hide the fact that she is terrible and is honest with it, but Kawaii , she will backstabb any person the moment she feels her image is in danger

that last scene when all the masks fall, and he feels that he can finally be free from the burden he has been carrying all his life, all the regrets even tho they still live with him, he finally gave himself a second chance, a second chance to live, to be accepted, be loved and to be happy. its such a strong scene, in many many ways, the music made it even better, i can't watch this without getting emotional, its a mix of so many feelings together.
i've watched a reaction by a therapist, where he says: depression doesnt go away, it doesnt lift for some people, but there is a capacity to feel, there is a capacity to experience joy, the cure for many things is connection, and we may think that no one wants to connect with me, but we just need to find the right people.
i think this sums up everything ishida felts during the movie, thats why the last scene hits so hard, the weight of that burden, of all the feelings, of all that depression, was too heavy, and to feel at least for that momment, lighter, to feel that he was able to connect with people that loves him again...was a beautiful composition, probably one of the most beautiful scenes from all animes that i've watch (and i watched more then a thousand animes in general).

I actually think this movie has a perfect way to represent Depression and Anxiety. The "X"s on the face is such a great touch and the ending is such a perfect wrap up. Bottling your emotions always leads to an explosion eventually and it really hits the spot to see that release and him just crying it out.

Alana, I am always soothed by your compassion and gentle words, you really add to the content you are reacting to. I believe the hardest part of overcoming the effects of bullying is just forgiving yourself and overcoming the hatred towards others that you keep brewing inside. It makes it really hard to trust others, and harder still to trust your own judgements.

There's a reason I tried to avoid watch this movie again, and it's because it breaks me sooooo hard. There's a lot of things I can relate to some characters, the bullying and closing yourself to the rest of the world, the anxiety, there's a lot and it's really hard when you're young... That ending always makes me cry a lot...

I loved you reaction. Absolutely loved it. It's one of those anime films that stay with you for a few days. You start reflecting on how many people you might have scarred when you were at school, and what would you do to apologize. Or if you were the victim, would you have forgiven them?
As for your next adventure, I only have two words:
    Violet
    Evergarden

I don't know if you'll reading the manga but there are so many details that make you to understand some things, for example de fact that at the beginning Ishida's mom was injured when they went to apologize to Shoko's mom, the part of the Chizuru's dream when Shoko came after school crying and telling her she wants to die... Always rewatching the movie after knowing that, it crushed my heart

Perhaps it's because I've read the manga and the movie had less time to show Nishimiya's mother, but *I can't stress enough how underappreciated the scene of her bowing down to Ishida's mother is*.
Nishimiya's mom has basically two defining traits:
    - she hates and resents the kid who bullied her daughter with a passion and could seemingly never forgive him
    - she is emotionally distant from her deaf daughter (both daughters, really) and barely ever shows any emotions in general
The first time Ishida's mom went to apologize to Nishimiya's mom for her son being a bully, we see her coming back with her earring RIPPED OFF her ear, bleeding. That's an incredible way to show how much actually dwells beneath that stone-faced woman whose kid was abused. Even if she doesn't show that for one reason or another, she loves her daughter(s) with a PASSION and if you ever, EVER hurt her, you and your family are never gonna be forgiven…
And then she kneels, in public, to apologize to the same mother of that same bully because he got hurt saving Shouko's life. Maybe before this point you thought she was emotionally distant from Shouko because she really didn't care. Maybe you thought she was just pissed at a bully who admittedly ruined a bunch of expensive hearing aids. Maybe you thought she was only trying to save face whenever she acted in defense of Shouko, maybe you thought she was just a prideful, angry person who held a grudge.
That scene barges into the kitchen and goes on a rampage to make sure no other option remains on the table: Shouko's mom f*ckin' loves her. Always has, always will, whether she's capable of showing it properly or not. No pride, no grudge, no anger, even the most justified anger possible, will stop her from showing gratitude for her daughter's miraculously preserved life.
The fact that the only other moments that show her motherly love (even if, again, you could've interpreted them differently) do it through angry acts of violence only makes this one scene of absolute humility resonate so much more.

The moment you realize older Ueno is a plot device to vocalize the darkest inner thoughts of Shoya and Shoko.
Shoya and Ueno on his bike and after she takes out Shoko's hearing aid is Shoya remembering being her bully and how he used to act, questioning being her real friend.
At the park after seeing his old friend, of COURSE he has thought of how different things would have been if he never met Shoko.
Shoko on the Ferris wheel, she also feels she ruins things and hates that she can only seem to apologize for doing so.
And who beats up a suicidal girl for almost getting someone killed calling them selfish and worthless? She would already be doing that to herself. Ueno plays the role of her dark inner manifestation. Even for her mom. Brilliant.

It's completely normal, I think, that one gets much more emotional when talking about a story, than when watching it.
I can't even talk in any detail about 'Grave of the Fireflies', another anime masterpiece, without choking up completely. I watched it twice (I wanted to show it to someone) and boy was it much harder the second time. But it's a must-watch.
Two older series I would recommend are 'Aria' (all 3 seasons), a healing slice of life anime with outstanding music. And Tokyo Magnitude 8, the story of two siblings after an earthquake.

I think alot of stuff is missed with whatever sub this is the "i like you" - "the moon?" part is heartwrenching. in the sub I watch they kind of transcribe nishimiya to show it from the perspective of what a normal person of hearing hears, so it goes "i, lub, moo" which gets misconstrude.
