I don't know how many times I've explained to people why it's not necessarily a good idea to wait to throw down winterizer until after the first hard frost. It's what they've been taught and they don't want to hear anything else. It's a shame really but thanks for spreading better practices.
Hey Richard I appreciate the words, bro.! That's what it's all about. Being the best stewards we can be while using sound agronomic practices. 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
Im really enjoying your channel. One of the few (if only) ones that dont start all advice with just throwing tons of product ($$$$) on a lawn.
I'm well past that phase. It's easy to follow the hype when you haven't done independent research or studied for yourself. Take it easy on them, and hopefully, one day, they'll come around. Thanks for the feedback and support ✌️🏾💪🏾🌱
Turf, as always such valuable content. Most appreciate all of your tips
Thanks, Bro! I appreciate that 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
I don't normally comment on videos..but ...Good work...cheers....very informative...learnt a few tips..that's coming from an old time seasoned gardener...👍💯😎
Thanks, good sir! I appreciate the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed it 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
Lots of research out there on this topic.
Fall Fertilization Timing Effects on Nitrate Leaching and Turfgrass Color and
Growth: "Applying fall fertilizer improved turf color and increased shoot density, chlorophyll concentration, reflectance index, and clipping yield in our cool-season turf lawn. However, no differences in color, clipping yield, chlorophyll concentration, shoot density, or root mass were found among the 15 October, 15 November, or 15 December treatments. In contrast to this, however, the data from this study suggest a potential negative impact to water quality by applying fertilizer late in the fall. Both NO32N concentrations and mass losses in percolate water increased with later application dates. These findings suggest that the current recommendation of applying N in mid- to late November in southern New England may not be compatible with water quality goals. Water quality concerns would dictate an early or low-rate fall application if soluble N fertilizer is used, or no fall N application. Because NO32N concentrations and mass losses were elevated in the fall and winter in this study, consideration of temperature, moisture, and existing available soil N is of particular concern when making fall fertilizer recommendations. More research addressing the interactions of the effects of timing, source, and rate is necessary before optimal application recommendations for fall fertilizer can be made with confidence. Concerns about the timing of fall-applied fertilizer are especially relevant in northern climates where cold weather and high precipitation in the fall and winter limit potential plant uptake and increase the likelihood of considerable N leaching losses."
Rethinking Fall Fertilization - University of Nebraska - Lincoln:
"Nitrogen in the soil solution is transported to the roots via plant transpiration through a process called mass flow. The higher the transpiration rate, the more nitrogen gets to the roots. Low evapotranspiration during late fall limits mass flow and reduces access to nitrogen. As a result, nitrogen from late fall fertilization either sits in the soil until the grass resumes growth in the spring or it is lost through processes such as leaching (especially in sand-based soils during high precipitation winters). This work has since been replicated and confirmed by researchers at the University of Minnesota and Penn State University."
Bam! Say it louder for the people in the back! Thanks for watching 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
I liked, "Not a fan of "hoping for the best" when I'm not even doing [the right thing]". Good advice for living life.
I like your style Rob. Good honest credible info goes a long way. Much respect to you. 👍👊🏼
Thanks Bro 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
Good info. Man! So do I dig up the dead weeds or just leave them there over the winter?
Thanks, Man! Glad you enjoyed it. It's not necessary to pull them out, but if it's an eyesore, I would wait twice as long as the label says to ensure the best results.
I over seeded but most of it is good, but I still waiting for some seedings to pop up. I'm in the transition zone of NC, I seeded with GCI Cool Blue which is 85% ttff and 15% kbg, my question is should I throw down my fall fertizer now even though I'm waiting for more grass to pop up?
If its time for an application absolutely go for it!
👏

That's what it's all about, brotha! Having a fire lawn while still being good stewards of the environment 💪🏾🌱
Another great video Turf have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. How is Baby Turf doing?
He's doing great! Thanks for the love offering ❤️❤️❤️
Great advice. I don’t have a lawn right now myself, but I can advise family members who do. 💚💚💚 Take care. 🤟🏽 AuntieEllen
I hear that! I appreciate you ❤️🌱
Lol
🤘🏻 😊
well said! apply products at the correct timing to yield the best result with the least amount of environmental impact! I actually stopped applying fertilizer about 3 weeks before my first frost because the grass just doesn't show any signs that it needs any more fertilizer and it would just push unnecessary growth and mowing.
Exactly bro! And yes, some circumstances call for an earlier application for sure 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
Thank you Shots fired 😂
Not shots. Just getting the agronomy out there bro 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
Great info Turf! I enjoy watching your videos so much. I just aerated and overseeded 22 days ago. I have good germination for the most part but there are a few small areas that still have baby grass sprouting out. My existing turf needs mowing, but I'm wondering if I should hold off a little longer so I don't rip up any of the seedlings. We got two inches of rain last night so I think that's why I'm seeing all the new seedlings coming up. I anxiously await your advice on the mowing.
Thanks man. I appreciate the feedback. Congratulations on your successful overseed 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 As for your first mow let your soil dry out a bit and go for it. Get on and get off it. No need for it to be a perfect mow and easy on your turns. ✌️🏾🌱
@@TurfTherapy Thanks for the reply! I'm reading you loud and clear. Maybe a couple days will let it dry out and the little graylings grow a little taller. Thanks so much for the advice.
Beautiful to go up against some legends in the game
Spot on Turf thanks for the info. Haines over the top sometimes
For sure, bro! Yeah, he means well just was off base with this one. ✌️🏾🌱
When you jumped in at the beginning I was like, "Oh, oh!" Then you broke it down. I'm on my way out now to check the moisture in my soil. Peace!
Solid video bro! 💪🏽 I thought I was going to see another cameo by lil turf, maybe next time 😃#weworkin #teampolo
Maybe next time bruh 😆 Thanks for sliding through 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
Really a different game with cool season grass. Different rules for our warm season grass. No real dormancy in central FL but growth does slow down so we can still fertilize with high K though don’t think it’s absolutely necessary.
Yeah, contextually, this is a cool-season channel, and he was referring to cool-season lawns. I also agree that the high K is not necessary for warm seasons. Thanks for watching 💪🏾🌱
@@TurfTherapy Allyn gives good advice for warm season lawns and has helped many to have great lawns, but the advice for cool season here seems odd.
I watched a couple of your videos and I used to live up north. Looks like I was unknowingly doing some things right lol. I miss my cool season lawns. Doesn’t require nearly as much work as st. Augustine grass to make it pop.
Excellent Content Rob 💪🏾💯
I really like you videos, very educational Thanks for the tips

Oh so dandelions are much like bears because they store food over the winter (carbohydrates and such) and hibernate. 👀
Great tips on winterizing our lawns!
Loved the video! 😉
Yup. Just like the lawn. Thanks, Fam ❤️👀
When do you mow after seeding?
It depends but typically, for lawns maintained at average heights, I mow at around 3-5 weeks.
The info you didn’t know you needed. Good job Turf!
Just trying to do my part out here Vince! Thanks for the support brother 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
I hope you good people reading this understand what is being said in this video. "NO BASHING", Turf is just providing GOOD Data Driven INFORMATION for you to use in your lawn. The King of the Bluegrass has spoken.

If you want fertilizer for spring, apply it in the spring. Letting it "winter" is how you fertilize your storm sewer.
Facts 💯✌️🏾🌱
Ive done the fall seeding a few times and had an amazing result for the holiday season... but this fall it ain’t workin
Sometimes that's just how it goes. After luck next year ill have tips for the spring 😎✌️🏾🌱

I have no idea about winterizing haha
😆 Bruh. Missed you this year!
@@TurfTherapy yeah didn't make it. Busy busy. I'll hit you up late to chat
Great video brother. Always learning from you! You disappeared at gie and I didn't get to give you a hug goodbye😪
Thanks man I really appreciate it! And yeah next time I'll have to get both hugs upfront 🤣😂✌️🏾🌱
One thing i learned that most people dont know is how big a single grass plant actually is. I have a 4x4 planter on my desk with one rye plant in it, Its filled the whole area plus some. I estimate the 5 month old plant has 75 blades. That young sapling this year will be a lot bigger next summer.
Absolutely! You have to give room for these plants to fill in and mature. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience bro ✌️🏾🌱
Solid resource here Rob, nice to see more youtubers use the word "nitrification'. I cutoff urea once soil temps drop below 50, ammonium sulphate is much better for colder temps and natural sources of N can be put down super late for breakdown over winter by all those fungal decomposes that nobody ever talks about. Lots more could be added to all of your points but then again I talk too much all the time. Good job presenting this for edu sake!
If you watch closely, I cut the first topic short by about 3 minutes for the sake of the viewer and information overload 😂😆 Thanks Bro 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
@@TurfTherapy lol, that's always my problem, I don't trim enough 🤣 btw, good to see you doing more lawn stuff as of late. I love the gardening content too but your lawn stuff is always a happy find on my home screen.👊
Yeah probably won't be doing much more garden content moving forward. Maybe 3/4 videos a year, max tbh.
@@TurfTherapy ohh man! I figured you put in enough work on the garden stuff to have developed a bit of an audience there for that. It'll be good though to have an another agronomistic (is that a word?) mind on the tubes going forward though 😃
Great video and now happy subscriber.
Thank you and welcome to the team ✌️🏾🌱
Man I am elated that we crossed paths. I know what Allan was saying didn’t make any sense. Sounded good but completely wrong. Thanks again!!!
No problem brother! Al is good people just way off base with this one. Thanks for watching man 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
I dormant seed and I dormant fertilize...it's worked amazing for me
Never said dormant seeding didn't work. And great job with being irresponsible with fertilizer 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
@@TurfTherapy 😬 are you ok? Thanks for the highly professional reply.

No, thank you!
Where have I seen that spray technique before 👀
😎💪🏾🌱
You have intrinsic credibility. Thank you for another great video.
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated ✌️🏾🌱
Great video Turf. I do two applications each fall. Once in September and Once in October. Great point as well on the dormant seeding. I have considered it but I haven't really seen anybody with great results from it and also seed is expensive right now to throw away.
Exactly Joe! Seed ain't cheap better your odds this spring 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
You love that show Joey
Joey
I too am not a fan of dormant seeding. Biggest waste of seed I can think of
I think I would instead try pre-germinating in the spring for sure. Thanks for watching 💪🏾✌️🏾🌱
@@TurfTherapy .. yep...I am a fan of pre germinating, spring or fall, spot or larger. Saves time, water and $

Nice,
I don’t suppose you could also mention Celsius as well when you quote temperatures?
Nice channel,I Just subscribed.
That is why here on Long Island we can't apply any N down after 11/1 and until 4/1 the following season. 👍💚🦸
Right on! Maryland has similar dates as well ✌️🏾🌱
So when would you apply the last application in Maryland for TTTF? Haloween?
Nov 16 - Feb 28 is Maryland No Fert time. So if the weather calls for it, yes, Halloween would be ideal.
