- My name is Tyler Veglia. I served 12 years active duty in the Navy as a Nuclear Machinist's Mate in the submarine community. I went up through the enlisted ranks and joined the Navy Reserves as a Chief Petty Officer. I have since applied for and been accepted into the Engineering Duty Officer community as a direct commission officer. Follow me on my journey through Officer Development School in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island as I give you the day-by-day taskings. This will be a five video series with a bonus "tips and tricks" video at the end. Enjoy!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post these videos, I will definitely be following your journey. I hEAD to ODS this month on the 28th! Hope your experience there goes well and I was five weeks flyby :-)
Thanks for giving the daily updates
Watched all your videos. Thanks for taking the time to put this info out. My ODS class starts Aug 28.
Thank you for the insight!
Waiting for NAVPERS to sign off on my gain before going to my NOSC. Hoping to go to ODS by this Oct.
Would you be willing to do a video about the RC EDO position? I am a civilian interested in applying for the direct commission and would love to hear about the process and work environment. Thank you
I had some quick questions:
1) For the swim test I have heard that the 5 min prone float can be either face up or face down. Were you allowed the choice or was it strictly face down?
2) I was tyring to find which taxis had base access. Do you happen to remember which ones had access when you went to ODS?
3) Was there class PT on the weekends was PT typically weekday only?
1. Either
2. I drove so I’m not sure
3. No organized PT on weekends. You’ll have liberty and your radius will be determined by how well you all have your shit together
So for the Type 3s, you wore black boots I assume when you said you shined it, right?
This is very informative and helpful to be prepared prior ODS. Thank you for this video.
Yep, black boots. If you haven’t watched them already, I have more videos including tips and tricks.
Thank you so much for the videos! Are they still doing the silver dollar tradition at ODS? Thanks!
Not that I recall. Since we are commissioned prior to ODS I gave a silver dollar to my first salute at the ceremony and then I gave a silver dollar to my first “random” passerby salute.
Thank you so much for this video. i wanted to ask about the uniform purchase. do we purchase everything from out of pocket for almost $2000 and just get reimbursed for $400 only.
Check out my ODS - Tips and Tricks video. I go over all of the options around the 13:10 mark. If you still have questions afterwords, reach out!
This is awesome. Question: Are you required to wear the boot brands that they sell at ODS?
Check out my tips and tricks video which discusses boots. Short answer is no but they need to be approved for wear in Navy uniforms.
Do you need to go through a MEPS-like process again in ODS or is it just medical paperwork, filling out forms and the like? For instance, do they test your hearing and vision at ODS?
Just paperwork. Don’t recall hearing or vision. You’ll go to dental though.
If I arrive the day before class starts will I have access to meals? Can I go to the thrifts shop or NEX?
There is a NEX on base as well as local delivery options that can bring food to King Hall. You should be fine. There’s also a little coffee shop and bowling alley but their hours might be weird.
Hey! Thank you for your video. How old are you when you joined if you don't mind me asking?
Active duty? 20. I turned 21 in boot camp. I’m 35 now.
What entails medical clearance other than blood/urine analysis?
I believe it has to do with your weigh-ins and the health questionnaire you fill out. I don't think labs or urinalysis have anything to do with being cleared for PT.
What did you take to ODS? Civi’s? Computer? I have a crap ton of uniforms and it’s gonna be hard to fit in a suitcase.
There’s a list of items to bring on the ODS webpage. I wore civilian clothes to check in. Bring your laptop, cell phone, smart watch, etc. You will be expected to wear PT uniform, NWUs, Khakis, and summer whites (summer) or dress blues (winter). I have still successfully managed to dodge buying choker whites. If you have other specific questions lmk.
@@MrSubmariner771 Got it. And PFA is done on the first Friday correct?
@@jordanvenegas2281 not first day because they need to medically clear everyone before they can PT you. First week though. That Thursday or Friday.
@@jordanvenegas2281 I read “first day” not “first Friday”. You are correct though. First week-ish.
@@MrSubmariner771 thanks. One last question, sorry, but when I went to navy boot years ago, we used to hide our undershirts and socks so we don’t get dinged as much when it came time for rack inspection. Should I minimize when I take when it comes to socks, skivvies, and undershirts? I keep thinking ODS is going to be a lot like navy enlisted boot.
Hello Sir.. I just want to ask if you were allowed to use your cellphone during the entire 5 weeks that you were on training?.. thanks
Yes you keep your cell phone and laptop locked in your personal locker. You can use them in the evening. You cannot bring your phone to lectures, meals, etc. If you are waiting on an important call you can work with your class officer to get permission to bring it with you on a case-by-case basis. Have fun!
@@MrSubmariner771 Thank you.. All info in your channel are informative.. More power!!
Just stay off your phones.
How does the swim qualification work?
I talk about it a bit in one of my videos but if you have a specific question let me know.
As far as navy knowledge, are you expected to know all of it ? Some of it is difficult to remember without a reference or being in the environment. Are you penalized for not knowing certain info?
Is this for New Service members ? Everyone was taught all this in Boot Camp , learned how to March, left face etc.... I can see new Sailors but people that have already been to training need to be re-trained . ??? Seems like a waste of man power?
There’s certainly a debate on this topic and it gets addressed in ODS. All direct commission officers will attend ODS regardless of prior service.
@@MrSubmariner771 so it doesnt matter if you are currently serving ? If you packet gets selected you are sent to training with new service members to retrain ? Just making sure I am understanding this properly
@@Bronco407 if you are prior enlisted, yes. I have heard of waivers being approved for officers and warrants who were previously commissioned.
How was the swim qual. ? Same as boot camp ?
@@bobbrofloski yep same thing with the exception of the 5-minute float. I recall in boot camp that we had to have our faces in the water. At ODS you are allowed to float on your back in you want.
You’re on your phone at ODS? 🤦♂️
