For what it has already cost me to be one, I would never have wanted to be a human being.
That I am one is horrifying to me.

Human nature doesn't change. That's the scary part. We're not as far removed from our brutal past as we would like to think, and I have to wonder what's actually stopping the modern, developed countries that went away from that lifestyle in the first place from reverting back to it seemingly overnight.

There's a hell of a lot that's beyond our individual and collective control. That is to say, having the power to do good at a given moment is a luxury.

      @@torchlight3173
Again, it's about a luxury, I think. The power to not do evil would be a luxury. Why? Because there's a great deal that's beyond our control that makes it impossible for us not to do evil at least some of the time.

I can imagine that in order for someone to "do good" at a particular moment, he would be required to make a personal sacrifice so great that he would not be willing to make that sacrifice. The requirement itself would represent what was beyond his control, if it's one not subject to being changed.

You're not so obtuse as to believe that everything is a choice, are you?
Anyway, and perhaps I've been sloppy about it, I'm not trying to argue about what's good versus what's evil.
Instead, I'm merely making the point that there's a hell of a lot that's beyond the control of all human beings. Thus, there's a hell of a lot that human beings _DON'T_ have a choice about.
For example, not all human beings have a choice about suicide. Neither do all human beings have a choice about suffering.
And all of that is purely circumstantial.
That is to say, natural forces that are beyond our (individual and collective) control: they will have determined all our circumstances: they will have had the final say as to what was and was not possible for all of us.
