OK, so I hooked up Sony HU to my CR-V, it is all in all very similar to this (and 8th gen civic). John did a perfect tutorial, I'll just add a few things if someone finds helpful in the future: - First of all, take a look at these 2 connectors at 21:15, I'll refer to them bellow. Smaller gray one is a Honda 20 pin -B Connector, which contains AUX input, steering wheel controls and amp power. Green one is a Honda 5 pin - D connector which contains 3 wires for the subwoofer, under the passenger seat. - Your Honda (and many other vehicles) DO NOT require separate interface for steering wheel controls (in this case ASWC-1), so don't throw your money yet before checking do you really need to. This is important because Sony Head unit (and many other popular ones) CAN differentiate different steering wheel buttons. Honda steering wheel controls are actually 2 wires in the B connector - pink one for the SWC input, and brown one for the SWC ground. Splice some AUX cable and hook the ends to these two wires and voila. Note: AUX Cable will have 3 wires (2 input + 1 ground), Hondas use only Input 1 so one wire will be taped. - Blue/white wire from the harness is for the amplifier / subwoofer power, and connects to the Red wire on a B Connector - 3 Wires in the green D connector are - Subwoofer +, Sub -, and Sub Shield. Solder these to a RCA chinch and into the SUB OUT on your stereo. (these with the blue/white wire above give you out to the factory sub)
I just replaced my civic2013 stock headunit with a sony ax-5000. i bought an interface (axxess) and was not able to program it correctly with my new radio. More trial and error and research got me to try to build a copy of a sony rc-sr1 plug for my sony head unit. and true it works without an interface just by using the aux plug. I build a resistor network with switches to simulate the volume controls, channel, including the bluetooth handsfree buttons. All worked with the sony headunit just by connecting directly the resistor network to the head unit using the aux plug. The problem with the civic2013, was that the SWC in & SWC gnd in the harness (as per identified by PAC and axxess as term 3 & 13) is not an analog signal. THe handsfree buttons (call pickup, call end and voice) were analog signals - i was able to confirm it by pressing the buttons and i got resistance values for each HF buttons (cables found in bluetooth unit). However, for the SWC signals for the volume controls etc, i could not get a resistance readings by pressing the volume buttons etc. I suspect these are digital signals. Axxess interface and PAC interface has these two signals separate - analog for the HFbuttons and Data for the volume/channel etc. So for now, my head unit with apple car play works fine - i can receive calls, activate siri using the hands free buttons. However, my volume controls not yet working on the steering wheel buttons. Will check back on another weekend - the plan is to go directly to the steering wheel button terminals and run two wires directly to headunit - and program the buttons through the sony button config settings.
When wiring the SWC control wires from the aftermartket head unit to the B Connector, how would it get power when it is not being used (not plugged in)?

At around 25:48, you mention that you were unable to get the track back and track forward buttons to work. I installed a similar Sony headunit on my civic, with the same steering wheel control adapter and was able to find somewhat of a solution. For whatever reason if you assign the track forward and backwards buttons to the left and right steering wheel control buttons, they do work, but instead of pressing them like you would a normal button ~(.5 seconds) if you press and hold the button for slightly longer (1-1.5 sec), the track forward and track back functions will work. I’m installing my ax1000 tomorrow and I don’t listen to radio so no need for the antenna adapter (I’ll be removing the headunit and going back to stock if I ever sell the car. I’ve seen you say the SWC adapter isn’t necessary as these headunits have programable SWC built in. Does this mean I don’t need to hook up a SWC adapter at all?
There are actually two ways to change the time on the imid, the way you showed as well as pushing on I believe the right “stick” next to the tach. It brings up a little page and you twist the little stick to the left and right to adjust the clock. It’s the same one you use to adjust the dash brightness in the car. Anyways, I plan on using your video to kinda figure out how to get those steering wheel controls working, I have a different radio but I have the same ASWC box, I also have a separate harness for the canbus (very hard to find and acquire and cost $40-50 but worth it) so I don’t have to cut any wires on the one canbus. I originally installed my radio and never did the ASWC.
@@macboi7601 the steering wheel controls? not 100% sure, maybe 99.9% sure it'll work, mine is the LX and came with the basic radio. fundamentally the cars are the same wether it's a navi equipped model or basic, the harnesses should still all be the same behind the radio. as for how I got mine to work, it was some very very hard harness to find because I had to convince a company that made these funky android headunits to send me a "replacement" harness and I had to send them like 50 bucks manually over paypal. i remember it took months to show up lol. I did that to have a nice clean install for the AWSC without cutting any factory wires. Still working strong to this day.

@@macboi7601 My Si came with nav and I never figured out how to set the clock on the iMid without it. In my case when I disconnect my battery the clock defaults to 1400 hours (2:00 PM) so I just unhooked my battery, waited until that time and hooked it back up. Clock set.
@@macboi7601 I also have a 2012 EX with nav and that knob never worked for me so it's probably not wired or something on navigation models The only way is to disconnect and reconnect the battery or pull the fuse in the engine bay called BACKUP (10A I think) at 1:00 Maybe there is a way to reprogram the iMID to make it think it's a non nav model but I havent seen that anywhere
Great video, thank you! It seems like you didn't attach the reverse camera to the head unit but do you know where to find the reverse signal wire for tapping it? The Crutchfield docs I have said 44 pin harness green (B), pin 5, brown at the inside fuse box location but I'm not sure if I tapped the right wire b/c the head unit wouldn't start up until I disconnected that wire. I've seen some forums that mention tapping it from the harness going into the Imid but didn't want to take the top dash apart if I don't have to. Let me know if you (or any reader) have advice on this.
Ricardo Robinson yes you will need the dash kit for a Nav equipped civic. However your kit is only small plastic spacers to fill the gaps on either side of the new stereo. The stock Nav is bigger then a double DIN

Did this really improve the sound with the factory amps or did you replace those as well? I've read the stock amps have poorly set up crossovers so I'm curious as to the quality difference. I was thinking about doing a stock integration setup.

I am just reading about this matter and your approach is very interesting. I want to install the steering wheel controls on my 2010 Honda and didn't have any control originally and I am using a Sony XAV-AX100 head unit. Did you finish the installation? Is the aswc-1 necessary or is it possible to setup the buttons inside the head unit?

I saw in the comments below you managed to get the bluetooth buttons to work by connecting the grey wire on the ASWC1 to pin 15 on the Bluetooth module. Did you ever figure out how to get the forward and back buttons on the steering wheel to cycle through tracks?

@@carlosche11 what had happened was the wire was “initially” connected properly. But when putting things back together the wire got pulled and came undone. It took me a while to figure it out. That said, for the Bluetooth buttons on the Honda steering wheel. They are really not needed and become redundant. Well for me they did. When I programmed the ASWC1 I set “long press” on the source button as a way to answer and end calls and also to activate Siri. On the ASWC1 each button can be assigned dual function.
a civic ex with a double DIN stock stereo would be a good candidate for a radio upgrade. No need to buy a double din metra adapter which does'nt fit well and looks flimsy - this is what i have now (the honda orig middle double din adapter cost $150 alone).
Don't know if you finished your install but Metra sells an exact-fit replacement. I got mine along with the new head-unit itself direct from Crutchfield when I purchased my new unit last fall. I'm pretty sure they'd sell you the new Metra head-unit fascia alone.
He "wrapped" both the new Metra manufactured head-unit surround fascia and the OEM surround fascia on the left-hand side of the steering column with a bit of vinyl wrap. Check your local listings for shops that do vinyl wrap work in your area. They should have some small scrap pieces left over from other work that they'd be willing to let you have for a nominal charge. Alternatively, you can go to the major vinyl wrap manufacturer websites and order "samples" for about $5. They're usually sufficient to do minor work like this.
I am also wondering the same. The 9th gen SI has the premium Sound system and from what I hear is we are stuck with our radio unless we change out the whole system? Amp, wire harness, rear sub and speakers?
I only have one question - where did you get the bezel for the head unit so you can use the factory dash panel without having a giant void between the dash and head unit? I al having zero luck finding one.

What color was the wire on the footwell lighting that you tapped into? I have it but I never used the middle one so it's in the perfect spot. And also can you double up the steering wheel controls? I was thinking of making the volume buttons for volume and for answer/decline calls.
i bought my sony xav-ax5000 for my civic2013 at crutchfield. They bundled all what i needed for free with the radio except the steering wheel interface . Free - Metrac 40-HD11 antenna adapter, Metra 70-1729 receiver wiring harness, Metra 95-7882B dash kit, screw packs. I recommend to hold off buying the SWC interface unless somebody already figured out to have all buttons work - volume channel and Hands free buttons. I finish my install but was not able to successfully install the SWC. Only the HFree buttons works. the volume control no

zz12345aaa12345zz the blue antenna wire is to power the antenna to amplify the FM signal. It needs to be connected to a 12v source. The other harness has a 12v source that can be used. I connected all the blue wires together solely to not have a loose wire on the harness. Hope that makes sense

I have a 2013 Civic Si with the same setup as yours. I lost my factory keyless entry when the factory radio was removed. I confirmed this by switching between both radios. Any ideas?
@@DIYManiacJohnP 8) For vehicles with OE Bluetooth buttons, press and hold the Hang up or Pick up button on the steering wheel after the LED on the ASWC-1 goes solid. If the OE Bluetooth buttons are able to be used the LED will go out after 3 seconds. Your OE Bluetooth buttons are now programmed to your aftermarket radio. Note: The aftermarket radio must have Bluetooth capability and must be able to accept these commands.

Probably too late but tapping to one of the reverse lights (positive) and negative to chassis makes the trick

Adubs the non-premium Honda stereo system does not have external amps. All amplification comes through the head-unit
The SONY AX7000 will upgrade your sound. theres more power assigned to the audio outputs.

Yes i did. All steering wheel functions now work. It all came down to the programming of the ASWC1

@@carlosche11 the grey wire ended up be my own fault by not having it properly connected. It works as planned now!
@@DIYManiacJohnP Just so I can learn from you, how would I know if I have connected properly or not? You seem meticulous in your approach so if it can happen to you, I'm trying to avoid making the same mistake :)
@@carlosche11 what had happened was the wire was “initially” connected properly. But when putting things back together the wire got pulled and came undone. It took me a while to figure it out.
That said, for the Bluetooth buttons on the Honda steering wheel. They are really not needed and become redundant. Well for me they did. When I programmed the ASWC1 I set “long press” on the source button as a way to answer and end calls and also to activate Siri.
On the ASWC1 each button can be assigned dual function.

a civic ex with a double DIN stock stereo would be a good candidate for a radio upgrade. No need to buy a double din metra adapter which does'nt fit well and looks flimsy - this is what i have now (the honda orig middle double din adapter cost $150 alone).

Don't know if you finished your install but Metra sells an exact-fit replacement. I got mine along with the new head-unit itself direct from Crutchfield when I purchased my new unit last fall. I'm pretty sure they'd sell you the new Metra head-unit fascia alone.

He "wrapped" both the new Metra manufactured head-unit surround fascia and the OEM surround fascia on the left-hand side of the steering column with a bit of vinyl wrap. Check your local listings for shops that do vinyl wrap work in your area. They should have some small scrap pieces left over from other work that they'd be willing to let you have for a nominal charge. Alternatively, you can go to the major vinyl wrap manufacturer websites and order "samples" for about $5. They're usually sufficient to do minor work like this.

I am also wondering the same. The 9th gen SI has the premium Sound system and from what I hear is we are stuck with our radio unless we change out the whole system? Amp, wire harness, rear sub and speakers?

What color was the wire on the footwell lighting that you tapped into? I have it but I never used the middle one so it's in the perfect spot. And also can you double up the steering wheel controls? I was thinking of making the volume buttons for volume and for answer/decline calls.

The stereo was purchased directly through Sony Canada (website) the trim and wiring from a local AV store
i bought my sony xav-ax5000 for my civic2013 at crutchfield. They bundled all what i needed for free with the radio except the steering wheel interface . Free - Metrac 40-HD11 antenna adapter, Metra 70-1729 receiver wiring harness, Metra 95-7882B dash kit, screw packs.
I recommend to hold off buying the SWC interface unless somebody already figured out to have all buttons work - volume channel and Hands free buttons.

zz12345aaa12345zz technically not necessary. But it is a “nice to have” as you can dual program each button.

zz12345aaa12345zz the blue antenna wire is to power the antenna to amplify the FM signal. It needs to be connected to a 12v source. The other harness has a 12v source that can be used. I connected all the blue wires together solely to not have a loose wire on the harness. Hope that makes sense

I have a 2013 Civic Si with the same setup as yours. I lost my factory keyless entry when the factory radio was removed. I confirmed this by switching between both radios. Any ideas?
Brian Bettencourt I have no idea at all. There really should be now correlation between to two. Unless the SI is made differently

I have now been able to get the buttons to work. I did so by connecting the white and using the Axxess software to remap the buttons.
