    I love the cow cam. It gives people a chance to see, she's not mooing like mad, she's not thrashing about. She's just waiting patiently because she knows she will be out soon. ❤️ She may not realise you're helping but she will figure it out when she walks away. They must know on some level that they walked in really hurting and then walked out feeling much more comfortable.

      Dairy cows sort of get used to being messed about with as they are in and out of the milking parlour all day being milked. As the inquisitive cow showed they don't fear the crush or the trimmers because they know they are not in danger or going to get hurt. In fact, dairy cows produce so much milk it is relaxing for them to get milked and they get fed at the same time which they also enjoy so entering a steel walkway and then being restrained is just part of their life which, as odd as it may seem, has some quite positive psychological elements to it.
      Beef cattle though are quite the opposite as they are not frequently handled that way and prone to struggling violently in a crush and then often collapse onto the floor of the crush as their feet skid from under them. For this reason we only ever got our beef cattle into a crush to give medication or treatment and then for the bare minimum of time. Generally beef cattle don't get their feet trimmed.

    • @DS9TREK
      @DS9TREK Год назад

      She was stressed out by the crush though. Cows only dribble like that when they're stressed/anxious

    • @junoantaresofficial
      @junoantaresofficial Год назад

      @@brianthesnail3815 wouldn't it make more sense to condition them to being walked through walked ways and through a crush? Maybe not everyday, but often enough that it doesn't cause injury to themselves or the humans who take care of them? Not judging, genuinely asking because I don't know anything about cows other than what I see on this channel.

    • @brianthesnail3815
      @brianthesnail3815 Год назад +2

      @@junoantaresofficial I think you are asking about conditioning beef cattle by getting them to walk through walkways and crushes so they get used to it?
      Not really. Beef cattle don't get touched for months on end, mostly they live in fields or in big yards as a herd. They aren't frightened of their handlers, they will actually come very close and lick you. Making them walk about through gangways and generally pushing them about would just cost money and time and stress. They are generally calm when kept as a herd but get stressed when separated and restrained and it isn't really possible to get them used to that like a cow that gets milked every day of its life. Best to just minimise handling beef cattle. They are kept under a quite different form of husbandry than milking cows.

    • @elizabethcrooms2006
      @elizabethcrooms2006 6 месяцев назад

      I've owned beef cattle for many years and agree with you whole heartily, beef cattle are completely different. Most of the time the least little thing can scare them, and giving them medicine is a real treat in it's self. They will maul you in a second if they get a chance, because I know of several people that have lost their lives from a pet that got scared and either stomped them to death, or gored them. Either way it's an awful way to go. Just wanted you to know there is someone out here that agrees with you.

    Poor little thing. I find myself looking for how these cows hold their heads as they walk, just to see if I can see something.
    You are teaching all of us who'd really enjoy doing a job like this but for one reason or another cannot.
    The very best job I ever had I kind of fell into as a farm hand of my bosses quit and I volunteered to take care of their horses until they got a replacement.
    I ended up keeping that job, I loved it so much. It was so calm and quiet and you become so attached to the animals and grow to admire how brilliant and beautiful they are.
    I watched the farrier shoe them and helped the vet with care.
    I felt such a kinship with the horses and silent deep communication. Now I'm too old and infirm to do it but I'll never forget how wonderful the experience was, even cleaning out the stalls.
    Thanks for bringing those feelings back to me when watching you and these beautiful animals.

    That shot of the cow's face when she's in the crush, she looks perplexed. Completely unsure what is going on & how to feel about it but also calm.
    Animals are intelligent & humans must confuse most if not all of them. So many cows must see you & your crush as a good, bizarre but good. They don't know alot about what is going on, but the ones in serious pain, know you did something to make it hurt less.
    Some trims make more of a difference than others, even just between the lame. They step out all timid & cautious, after having had a break from the pain while that hoof is off the ground. It's always a pleasure to see those first timid steps, gain in confidence with the realisation it doesn't hurt or if it does no where near as much.
    I live with extreme pain daily, I know what we do to alleviate pain is try & transfer weight else where. Which in turn can create more issues. I know after procedures to eliviate pain the feeling of no pain is beyond amazing. It's an awesome experience.

    Just finished your podcast and sit here with tears shining in my eyes. You know how to tell a tale and I was climbing that hill with you.
    Later when you spoke of the McFadgen (forgive my spelling,) farm, it's beauty and him being "rich in life" it touched my heart.
    We often don't stop to appreciate what's around us and what we've really got that is worth everything but money. This was a beautiful reminder. Please keep making the podcast, it was truly lovely. Thank you. ❤️

      Thank you.

    In truth, due to the daily life and average numbers of cows you normally attend to between all the farms you work for, I was expecting there would be more examples and variety of conditions.
    Happy to see that the numbers are actually lower than my expectations.

    I failed and got the wrong claw, LOL. I really think she was so calm because she somehow knew you were helping her. I really like the idea of your app. It is something I would enjoy listening to. I'm actually going to be in Scotland in a few months. How lucky would I be if by chance I ran into you? :) Much love to you and your family
