This issue has plagued historians in academia for quite some time too, and its effects are being felt in public discourse today. I remember being taken aback & quite disheartened when in my grad school Mideast studies Ilan Pappe made it explicitly clear during multiple debates that his political activism was driving his work over any sense of historical objectivity.
If an activist documents and disseminates there activism they are both. Freedom of press is a right everyone has. I personally find it creepy when someone on the news is talking about a horrific tragedy then immediately smiles and talks about something else.
@@twelvecatsinatrenchcoat The oppostite of a journalist is a reader. Not someone trying to precipitate change. A journalist can be both if the intent of their reporting is to effect change . @@wesKEVQJ An activist cannot report objective truth. It is not possible for them. Activists have narratives, not truths. I love love love love to listen to Noam Chomsky speak, he's very interesting, but Noam Chomsky is an activist. That means, every word out of his mouth passes through a filter. And I KNOW that I have to decode that filter if I'm going to find any truth in what he's saying. "Activist" is an antonym to "journalist." Activists don't report, they lead.
If voting is a civic duty or obligation then we should have better choices than a turd sandwich or a giant douche every four years. How are we supposed to pick one when both choices are awful? The duopoly by these two terrible parties and their concerted effort to keep it that way stifles the desire for most people to vote.

I volunteered, donated, and worked as a free lance reporter for years at the NPR affiliate in Atlanta. NPR has lost all objectivity in the last five years or so. They have become a propaganda organ for the Democrat Party, and we as taxpayers are forced to fund it. Its frightening really.
I love Nellie’s sense of humor, but of course, noticed right away her Left wing, progressive bias (still love Hillary). some snarky comments on occasion about conservatives, and it IS off-putting. I actually cancelled THE FREE PRESS for a few months, but returned for the other content that is hones and straightforward, and reasonable insights to both sides of an argument, as they should be.
The level of historical understanding and investigation, an expression of intelligence, is lacking as well. Propaganda gets fed to a lot of journalists and they echo it for lack of investigation or deciphering whether it is from a viable source. If the journalist knew that it is an Islamic practice to lie and show deceit during wartime, they would have some level of skepticism. A case in point is NPR echoing Hamas’ Palestinian ministry of Health numbers, but then going on to create a narriitive based on an erroneous number value.
She's the best! Bari gives me hope for the future of journalism.
She was ousted from the NYT for being pro-Israel.
I think that sucks, but it makes her claims here about being non-bias absolutely ludicrous.

Indeed: Objectivity and even-handedness are rare birds in contemporary journalism--anywhere.

Love the FP! Best podcast around.
My parents never told me who they voted for. They always said "It's no one's business but my own."
What happened to integrity?
I totally love your comments I think society in general has forgotten any form of objectivity!
Well said!

What has happened to journalism is disgusting
It should not be this way. Old school journalists got it righte
Are you not subjective, your platform has a strong bend itself
There has always been a bias in reporting, but now the journalist wear it on their sleeve.
In Australia, Prime Minister knew that they had to consider the owners of the press.
Fairfax press, SMH
Rupert Murdoch press, the Australian.
Packer press, Telegraph, Mirror.
And their TV stations and the ABC
And their radio stations
Honesty.
Be careful with that.
Unfortunately, journalists no longer deliver news but put forward their opinion or become activists. Such a shame!
Normative! WTF is that?
Today - no one is "unbiased" ... To the great shame of Americans that use their own deductive readoning - not yo be told how to think.

Toadie.
Uh... what do you think it means?
Its not news it is just their opinion you cant take seriously anything from someone who doesnt know the difference between a man and a woman.
Politics is one thing right from wrong it's quite another

The best conservatives are the ones that were liberal and then see the errors of the democratic way of thinking. She is a refreshing voice of reason.
The errors of the democratic way of thinking?😅 I don't think that came out the way you intended, unless you're supporting fascism now or something.
