- The B-52's Give Me Back My Man Live Rock in Rio 1985
Their first single, "Rock Lobster", recorded for DB Records in 1978 (see 1978 in music), was an underground success that led to the B-52's performing at CBGB's and Max's Kansas City in New York City. "52 Girls" was the B-side. Two versions of the single were released in the UK that featured the B-side "Running Around".
Their debut album, The B-52's, contained re-recorded versions of "Rock Lobster" and "52 Girls", along with six more originals and a remake of Petula Clark's classic "Downtown." It was eventually certified platinum.
The album had greater success overseas, especially in Australia, where it hit #7 on the back of three hit singles: "Planet Claire" (#43), "Rock Lobster" (#3) and "Private Idaho" (#11). "Rock Lobster" gave the band its first entry on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
The follow-up, Wild Planet, reached the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 in 1980 and was certified gold. "Private Idaho" became their second Hot 100 entry; around this time the B-52's performed a breakout set on Saturday Night Live and were featured at the Heatwave festival in August 1980.
Party Mix! was released next, a remix album that took tracks from the first two LPs and presented them in extended forms.
[edit] Mid-point
Although recording sessions with David Byrne (of Talking Heads) failed, the recordings were released as the Mesopotamia EP in 1982 (Party Mix! and Mesopotamia would later be combined and released together on a single CD).
The Whammy! album in 1983 brought the band into electronic and drum machine experimentation, much to the chagrin of some of their early fans. "Legal Tender" became their third chart single. After the initial pressings of Whammy! were released, copyright issues with Yoko Ono led to the song "Don't Worry" being pulled and replaced on future copies of the album with a new track called "Moon 83", a variation on "There's A Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)" from their debut album.
1984 brought about an eponymous solo album from Fred Schneider (Fred Schneider & the Shake Society) with contributions from bandmates Kate Pierson and Ricky Wilson. Tina Weymouth from the Talking Heads, Keith Haring and RuPaul appeared on the video clip for "Monster", a song about the "monster" in Fred's pants.
That year, the B-52's reformed to record Bouncing Off the Satellites. On October 12, 1985 Ricky Wilson died at age 32 of what was originally reported as cancer but was later revealed to be AIDS-related. Devastated, the band went into immediate seclusion and the album sank without any tour or promotion behind it. - Развлечения
I would say not Cindy's best vocal work ever but 2:05 makes up for any imperfections
Depends on a few things with the way she sings. She's 10 years into into it at this point. How long had they been on the road when they did this show. She had to have been nervous. That's a huge crowd.
By George, that's two very good points you make there 2:05, Peter! It's so very important in these troubled times to think clearly so as to get to the bottom of important things. 5:49 ; ) Cheers!
She looks stoned
WE FORGIVE EVERYTHING TO LEGENDS AND ICONS
shame shame, you cant do better, and neither can 53% of the majority of singers and the new age,an endndk j kljeu kiajdksllso , beless auss mm,a,,ddd,..s (man what was I on?)
I think they should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame...
+SuperDave - A LONG time ago!
I think that The RRHOF should have it's balls clipped by a rock......lobster
Why, because YOU like them?
They are not even close to being inducted , but in a few decades when the nominees get harder to pick, they will stay recognizing bands with 2-3 hits and virtually no discernable influence on other bands
Totally agreed... I have a much more eclectic and innovative mind with music, especially as a musician myself..... but these girls, and. Guitarist deserve it. The drummer is mediu quality professional, the male singer SUCKS, but he’s the only one that fits good with these girls. They all make it work so good.
The Rock and Roll hall of Fame in Cleveland could have been much much better. Cleveland didn't get the respected or support. The Hall of Fame inductee parties are held in NYC. (there are other examples)
**Sad The Hall of Fame couldn't afford some of the more desired exhibits they wanted. Exhibits showing Hologram videos of bands/singers (would have been cool).
Donations came up short. (because it was in Cleveland?)
Long live Ricky Wilson. This world has lost so many great people to AIDS. Ricky was a awesome songwriter, musician who is greatly missed by his fans. Rip Ricky!
He was so much more incredibly talented than anyone ever talks about. It's incredible that they were able to carry on without him, but only because all of them were so very talented as well. Such a great band, often disregarded. The pixies sing about absurd things, but get adoration. B-52'S should be no different.
What??
I'm hiv and I've met the b-52's they were cool i had a shirt
with lobsters all over it and Kate liked it
@@patrickhicks9880 What a great story ! And you are a wonderful inspiration for everyone ! 🌞💕🎉
then dont be a queer. you might live longer
Ricky Wilson defined that out of sight driving rhythm
for that whole area. Bad ass , Unbelievable
It's such an angry riff. Goes so perfectly with the song.
I was fortunate to be there. Ricky Wilson is the most underrated guitarrist ever. A genious!
Omg. Bravo Sergio! Xo
I envy you. He was a great guitarist!!!! I wish I had seen him live!!
Ricky rocking out, upsets me to think this was the year we lost a brilliant musician and fella
RIP Ricky Wilson ✌🏼
They didn't have The Drugs back Then that would Give life to HIV Infected people, I speak as a Person infected Myself..
He looks so tired there. Poor Ricky. Great people like him should live forever.
A band like the B-52's comes along once a in a lifetime (if we're lucky)...RIP Ricky
Ricky is still playing in this, what a trooper, he
I want a channel with every version of this song they ever recorded. I would listen to it until my ears bled.
Miles O'Neal
Oh, me too!
Sign me up. And can we add a Cindycam feature to it?
Are you gay?
i would listen to it for ever also one of my fav songs
I SOOO AGREEEEEEEE, ,,,,,SAM 101 AIRBORNE!!
Until I saw this video, I never realized how nice Kate's caboose was!!!
Same
Im digging Freds dance. Its like an aerobic workout. He is cutting the tile in his singlet. These were the greatest of times!!!!!
I don't know how Cindy danced with that huge monstrosity on her head but she gets a lot of credit for that!
How are they not in the Rock Hall of Fame yet? Most unique sounding band out there. You know it's the B52s from the first note. And then you boogie
Who cares? They are in a world beyond.
It's both sad and heartwarming to see how Ricky is playing so energetically here...even as he knows he's dying (and passing later that year).
:(
He has full blown A.I.D.S. at this point.
He looks pretty frail there. Amazing that he's able to power through the show.
RIP Ricky
@@alexkx8599 He's riddled with it.
Look at Kate playing the bass part on keyboard.
+ Nick Diamond : Exactly like Ray Manzarek (The Doors) great vision man!!!!
Saw them play this at a sold out concert outside of Wash. DC last week, incredible show :) Kate tripped over a monitor cord, and Cindy ran over and grabbed her from falling and held her for awhile afterwards. Unbelievable warmth among the band members, it's not just an act :)
Love this band
The B-52's always take me to my happy place. One of the best Punk/New Wave bands every.
And now. Knowing this for thirty years. Cindy's voice.. sexiest voice ever.
Ricky's guitar playing is fantastic!
Yes, yes it is
+Marco Abramo Why you use that as an avatar????
Why is your user name QueefJuiceOverflow?
Trism Driver why does my oldest son hate me? Why does chicken taste so good?
And he was not so well, already. Unfortunately.
love how the bass synth stands out in this version
Give me one million Lollapalooza's and I will never change it for Rock In Rio. This was a festival. And B-52s is one of most amazing bands ever. Originality, charisma, amazing musicianship.
Wow. I saw The B-52s in 1983 at the Agora Ballroom in New Haven, CT, which held maybe 500 people. Two years later -- and two years further removed from their first heyday -- they were filling arenas in Rio. Brazil loves The B-52's!
I think Cindy is such a great dancer !!!
Was
Is
Das
one of my favorite guitars just jamming away like he's the only one on stage. In the immortal words of Steve Miller "Rock On!"✌️from SPACE RANGER JYM
I was there! Ricky and Freddie I miss you both from the bottom of my heart! BRASIL still loves you both. Adoramos voces!! Olha só o entusiasmo do publico! No wonder artists love to perform in Brasil!
one of the best performances of the band! this introduction is heavy, dancing but didn´t loose the new wave beat. and cindy is great dancing(by the way, all the band was having fun in this concert).
I have seen many B52 shows since their beginnings and I like them much more when they started (until 1987 approx.), And without a doubt Cindy Wilson is an exceptional vocalist, she gives herself completely on stage, I love her sexy barefoot dances ( US festival 1982). On this occasion she was probably tired or nervous...she is forgiven because she is a Goddess on stage.
This is the COOLEST version of the song I've heard yet!!! Love the extended synth bass solos and the brass sections. SUCH a bop but it really comes alive here. Best band ever.
Pura energia positiva que envolveu os brasileiros, como Eu.
B-52 para sempre.
i can never get enough of these PURE CREATIVE GENIUS'S !!! Unlike today's studio pretenders The B52's are performers for the love of performing. Seems to be a dying breed, in that, they never wanted to disappoint their fans ..... i love them all !
Melhor música dos B-52'S,amo essa banda
This live track blows the studio track right out of the park! Wow! Builds like a volcano!
One thing I think the B52s had at this time was a maturation of their pop sensibilities. Listen to the unity of voices between Kate and Ricky on 'Theme for a nude beach'- it's just beautiful. It's a symmetry of singing like Brian Wilson strove for.
Ricky's voice was also the perfect foil for the emotiveness in Cindy's, the elegance of Kate's and Fred's barking.
When I listen to their later work I can't help but here the emptiness of that pure male vocal. His abscence is striking
Rock in Peace Ricky
If you ever wanted to play a cool song in front of a giant cool audience, this is so enviable.
Rick is a riff master....I dig him!
I was there, the atmosphere was magical. The B52 seemed to convert people as if they were a cult.
The peak of perfection.
Essa música é a minha nova religião, não consigo parar de ouvir!!!!!!!
Oh man - how much fun is this? Cindy looks and sounds so great. Young B-52s in Rio - wow, it doesn't get much better than this.....
B-52 era o espírito mais ostensivo da New Wave, ritmo que invadiu a primeira metade dos anos 80, Brasil e mundo.
Great clip, love to Ricky Wilson, always loved his guitar sound and style.
One of the best albums I have ever heard is the first 52’s album. Just a jaw dropper. They just went a different way and were good at it. ❤️👍
John Lennon thought the same
Demais esse som
Quando a música começa a tocar vc já percebe todo o charme da música
Yes, once her microphone started working!
Contagiante. Imagino o clima nesse dia.
I`m 52 ( how ironic) and i still thrash /jump /pogo around to anything they do. Can`t wait to see them in August again.
You must be 62 y o now.
A proud moment for whoever it was who made their wigs.
It was an amazing gig! Being blessed and lucky to be there and witness this great concert and one of Ricky's last performances. Rock In Rio I was fantastic and this concert was a highlight! Thanks for posting this. Long live Ricky! Long live B-52's! Long live ROCK!!!!
Espectacularrrrr.. demasiado éxtasis, la mejor cancion de los B52s , underrated!!! Slds Perú
Old but everybody gets old including me and u . there still cool in my books yep.
Still so damn cool. I saw them when I was 9, loveshack is what they played that I knew. I'm 37 now...I wish I knew what I was watching when I saw them.
Rio is the capital of the word party! damm i wish i were there, friends tell me to this day, that was the best concert ever!! R.I.P Mr, Ricky Wilson
Best\Most underrated song by this group
HOF for sure! They invented fun with hard core rock! They hit the scene where everyone was Zepped up, Sabbathed, DC'd and skinned..and were able to change minds..
I never get tired of looking at this. Its classic B52s new wave
Is this the last ever footage filmed of Ricky?
He looks so well, Rock Hudson died of AIDS around the same time and he had looked ill for ages. According to Keith, Ricky was feeling ok until almost just before he died. It was great he got to do this anyway, amazing crowd.
Sem palavras. Foi incrível, e para sempre será !!!!
Curtindo muito em 07/01/2019 I love Cindy Wilson 😍🇧🇷🇺🇸😍🇧🇷🇺🇸😍🇧🇷🇺🇸
Wünsche uns allen so schöne Musik wie diese Band seid Jahrzehnten macht, haben mehr verdient!!!💪💪💪💪

What fantastic memories these must be for the members of the great B-52's. Looking back at these 37 year old videos must give them a rush of accomplishment and pride with their lives.
Essa música é tão incrivel !!! Conheci essa banda há 1 semana e to viciada !
A friend introduced me to the B-52'S in 1984. This song caught my attention and I asked who this was. Been hooked ever since. When I hear this song I want to PoGo and thrash around.I'm 48 now and my wife won't let me !!!!!!!. Not really-The body won't let me!
This is brilliant. I know you shouldn't have regrets, but I do regret never seeing this unique group! One day, perhaps, never say never!!
I so admire him. He died soon after this. I will never forget the 2 guys who informed me of his passing. Whomever they may yet be.
In a time with so much boring pop music i miss this creative kind of joy music. Heard them first time 1980 and loved them since then. RIP Ricky Wilson.
The best Cindy, a Joplin touch, wonderful!
They’re both fucking hair icons. I love it! Big hair will forever be my fav.❤️
this rocks!!! builds like a volcano near the end. better than the studio version imo
this is spectacular long live the 80s they had Nina Hagen also playing the same night and the Gogos man incredible. what happen to music today it sucks
Man, you're not alone! I feel exactly the same, and I'm 43 now. I wish my body would respond like 25 years ago!! My top favourite is Private Idaho! Can't help shakin' my head to the drums beat!!!
Get out of the state you're in!
Damn! Watching is just the same as I recall it: I was there! How I so wish I could go back in time...best years of my life. Just look at them!
I love this song!!!
Simplemente fabulosos!!! me encantan...
Ai que medo desse som no começo e no fim da apresentação kkkkkkkkkkkkkk. Ai mas sério, queria ter nascido bem antes para ter presenciado o show deles. Pois B-52'S é deeeemais!!
i've been in bands ... so i know shes "leaving it all on stage" ... even if her voice topped off like it, it's STILL the B-52s and they STILL kick ass.
this sond never gets old
Yes
maravilloso !!
la chica le pone sentimiento a la cancion !
Every event held in Rio is grandious, for the people and the incredible energy of this city.
That driving punkabilly rhythm from Ricky is crazy.
🗿 DAMN❗ Rio de Janeiro was "ON FIRE" back in the 80's❗🌐😎
Quem foi viu e curtiu muito.Que grande época amigos!
Just saw the B-52's the other day in Louisville,Ky for the Kentucky Derby...They were fantastic!!Played some of the old but were promoting the Funplex release...I have been such a fan of theres since day 1 back in college...They still can CRANK IT !!! They are truly a great band ....
Who could resist getting back their man? Probably most of us ;-)
This must be one of the most difficult songs - the vocal range required is incredible. Cindy pulls it off I think.
It's said she's one of the few women who can sing that low range
Absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
I saw them last night in concert. They are so much fun to watch.
maravilha... que saudades desse rock in rio...
Nice times. Real artists with no play back things.
Cuando han estado en Rio tenia 20 años....no dejaré jamás de escucharlos...simplemente FANTASTICOS!!!
The B-52's are Legend , laying down that serious dance , funk beat , ...been lovin it ever since, beautiful memories this old track , ...still goin strong !

I was there! So amazing! This band is one of a kind! Superb!
the name of the band is "the B52s." in southern USA in the 1960s a "B52" was a slang term for a beehive hairdo. this band are famous for there crazy hairstyles.
This is the best and biggest wig Cindy ever wore in concert.
To the person that posted this... I visit this vid often over the years. It's one of my FAVORITE performances on RUclips. THANK YOU!
