Was born there in 51. Walked the High St. as a constable in the 70's. My family still lives there. I'm in Colorado. Miss the high St. and the beach. Thanks for this video.
My wife at the time, couldn't adjust to the country. She was born in Colorado. Broke my heart to leave. My Mum has since passed, so I won't be back. I do miss Ayr.
Many thanks for sharing. I left Ayr in 1974 and while this was great to see I also found it looking sad and empty compared to the thriving High Street back in the day. I only noted 2 buildings unchanged, The Bank of Scotland and Marks & Spencer which are both still in the original locations. It would appear that all the bars and restaurants are all long gone (e.g. Bucks Head, Duff Inn, Matha Dickies, The Plough) As a young man I worked Saturdays at Coopers Supermarket and later at Thomson's the Hatters, both on the High Street.
Thank you for the video. I used to spend a few weeks each summer in Ayr when I was a kid in the mid-1960s to early 1970s. I haven't seen the place since the early 1970s, but what I remember was the fresh air, sunshine, being able to swim in the outdoor pools (I think somewhere near the beach), and even Butlin's for a week around 1971. I've got fond memories of Ayr.
There's been quite a few changes in Ayr since this was filmed, with some of the shops having closed down and others have moved to different units. The area at the end of the video with hoarding around it was the previous Woolworth site and has now been opened up with seating by the River and the Cutty Sark building available for events. They now also hold the monthly Farmer's Market there which is proving popular with more stall holders joining each month and it's a much better site than the previous space which was much smaller on the High St. Although a lot of places have closed, there are some signs of new beginnings. There is to be a new Cinema at the previous Odeon site, Queens Court which has so much potential appears to be getting renovated and there are around 4 new places getting ready to open in Newmarket Street in Ayr which is a lovely wee street with Independent shops and Cafes. Sadly the Station Hotel had a major fire 2 days ago, so not sure what will happen up there once it's all been surveyed etc.
Last walked those streets 62 years ago when I was a little lad . Woolworths was like Disneyland. Miss thos3e days so much. Ayr High Street is nothing like it was back then, old one-off shops were still in the majority. Modernisation has taken nearly all it's beauty away.
What has happened to my beloved home town ?,can hardly recognize it,I left in 84 moving to the states ,but have been back many times ,but it is still sad to see the closed shops, and the high street empty, big change from when i was a young man,it was a great place too live back in the 70,s.
Olá! Estou conhecendo o canal agora. Por favor, qual o nome da múdica e da cantora na trilha sonora do vídeo? Acompanho todos os dias o Karaokê da Smuggles Air. Já fiquei encantada com esse pedacinho de chão da Escócia. 🇬🇧 the best ❤👌👌👌
Being from Ayr and having worked on the high street as as young boy its changed in so much as the shop fronts but the street it self remains the same. A Bit shocked to see the demolished building at the bottom of the town i guess this was due to being structural unsafe of the buildings ?.I worked in Lipton's store which is cornering on the old brig as a 14 year old boy that was my Saturday job to earn some extra cash going back a few years ago. Great video keep them coming I am now living in Asia and have done for 17 years i sometimes get back for a holiday that's again.
thanks Gordon, as you said the street hasnt changed much really just the shops, have you seen the new shopping centre just off the high street at ruclips.net/video/lwLElFC5Syo/видео.html

Many a fond childhood memory from 1960s-80s vacations and day trips. Love to visit when I am back in Scotland.

AYR CITY TO DHAKA CITY.
i think it needs all pulled down & rebuilt
Theres new bus stops
The High Street's so bad he disnae even get to the end o' it.
I like the scenery, but more commentary and less music would’ve been helpful…
Not a very diverse town looking at the people
