Thank you for the video. We were there in 2019 to visit my Mum. Lived in Kyle Court Senior living. Right in front of the train station. Walked the High St, in the late 70's as a Constable. A lot busier back then. People complain about the city, but I miss it. Miss getting a fish and chip supper and walking down to the beach. All my family still lives there, except my brother. He's in Pennsylvania. Won't be going back due to health. I'll never forget my time in Ayr. I loved it.
I was born in Ayr. My uncles worked at the railway station, my gran at Greys carpet factory. My mother was an usherette at the Odeon. In the sixties after he had retired from the merchant navy, my grandad worked on the Ayr dredger. None of these jobs exist anymore. The first big hit was the destruction of all the Ayrshire mining villages. No more mining families coming into Ayr to spend their wages. Then, deindustrialisation. It was such a trig, bonny town. It breaks my heart to see it like this.
Your right, back in the 80,s and before a lot off people used to go Ayr and there used to be lot more shops, and the place looked a lot nicer in the summer, too be fair its not just Ayr a lot off other towns are ghost towns now, they blame it on people doing more Internet shopping and the council are not spending the time and money on them now, its very sad.
I remember walking up the high street with my parents as a kid going to game. It was so busy. The place was covered in people and at a weekend it was so much busier. Such a shame what's happened
Its went downhill over the years into a downwards spiral such a shame just no much their in town centre nowadays use to go up regularly from girvan but not now, kyle central use to be jam packed with people you could've move in ayr for ppl at one point now council have turned it into a ghost town 😢
I think the decline of most seaside towns started when most folk started going abroad in the 80s/90s. Having said that, the beach in Ayr is still always packed on a really hot day. Specially right next to Pirate Petes
Reminding me of a joke. Can u think of a racing driver with a Scottish sou ding name. Ie Jonny Dumfries. Stirling moss..and ayr toon centre.....think about it. Lol
Since 1973 when the arabs started to hold britain,in fact the western world to ransom, over oil prices, ive watched every town industry going down .now we are at rock bottom.ayrshire has been hit harder than most.
It's so similar to so many towns around the country though. very depressing indeed. The buildings are still there. but the economy, the demographics, shopping habits have changed and town centres are unrecognisable from what they were in the past. The decline was noticeable on the late 90's and has greatly accelerated, especially after the pandemic. So many retailers now have simply given up. Throwing millions of pounds at high street makeovers, such as the Scottish and UK governments are trying to do, is a complete waste of money, when the underlying problems aren't being addressed.

Glad you enjoyed the video, John. Maybe we walked past each other in the 70s! I wish we had street videos of that period!

My parents and grandparents worked at greys factory and also they all worked at the bakery to.
I've just seen myself walking past 👀😂
Surprisingly similar to Falkirk, Stirling and Kirkcaldy.
It's a ghost town compared to the old days.
Woah! It *is*! Even for a Tuesday afternoon, I've never seen it so empty. Especially those shots of the high street; scary....
It’s the councils fault

I must have been there in another life . . . 😢
So much potential lost due to incompetent councillors.

I was thinking of this joke when I wrote the title. It's a classic!
I was there this year and it had the look of a once prosperous town , but now has a sad rather derelict appearance...sad to say
I walked away from bus station and saw man urinating outside pub Infront of women
Shell of a once thriving town. Very sad. 😟
Ayr is on the path to dying off. There's nothing good about it anymore.

The problem is feminist. It was a good life. Put now it is over. Hold on to your hats...
I think you might be right.
