I worked at the County Hotel Wellington Square 1976/78. I was very happy there holidayed there and took both my daughters on holiday to Ayr and Galloway. Ayr is a pale shadow of its halcyon days I wish it well and hope it improves its lot soon.
Thanks for your comment. I appreciate you sharing your memories here. A lot of towns in Britain have seen better days but there's more to a place than boarded-up shops and so on.
Ayr is a great town, it has virtually everything you need shops, cinema, restaurants, swimming pool, little coffee shops, glorious beach, close to 2 airports, rail links, proper hospital etc etc etc. People moan about the old train station but it was horrid and old and was never going to be improved. The new station will be great and efficient. Yes there are a few empty buildings but eventually they will be replaced and some things need improving like the swimming pool. Everyone looks back with rose tinted glasses. The most valuable part of Ayr is the people and they will never be replaced.
Thanks for your comment. It was a real pleasure to read it. I enjoyed making the film as I wanted to seek out positivity to counterbalance other RUclips videos that like to walk around filming derelict buildings and empty shops to say how terrible everywhere is. The huge move to online shopping means there are empty shops everywhere, which simply need a will to be re-purposed.
Ayr is also at the center of Scotland's west coast golf country, where numerous Open championships have been played at Prestwick, Troon ad Turnberry. Also, Burns thatch-roofed cottage is in Ayr.
Ayr has it's problems, like any U.K. small-town, but I think it's a great place to live. The communications are great: road, rail and air. It has a brilliant and safe beach. Entertainment wise, it's cinema has just been renovated, the Gaiety is a gem and there are plenty of restaurants and pubs. The town has some lovely parks and is surrounded by golf courses. Sportswriters, we have a Championship football side, Ayr United, a fist class rugby side and also a cricket team. Ayr has an easy reachable General hospital, Android access to both G.P. and dental services. Unfortunately, like many other towns, the High Street is suffering. As an Englishman, who has settled here, I enjoy living here. The people on the whole are very friendly.
Thanks for your comment, highlighting the positivity I found in Ayr. Derelict shops are found in every town in Britain, they are a fact of life which don't make a place bad.
Thanks for your comment. I never thought of that - my purpose was to ask local people what they liked about Ayr and I guess that nobody mentioned the museum because locals don't do museums! That's what tourists do. Your comment has a lot of validity, it made me realise that locals and tourists see a place differently.
Ayr used to be a very vibrant town not now , on a normal Friday it's actually hard to find any live entertainment, it's a shadow of it's former self unfortunately, pubs, and other businesses finding it extremely hard to survive, what a pity, Prestwick is better but not by much I have seen a decline there also , fair percentage of people I know who moved through from Glasgow years ago actually moving back to the likes of newton mearns, whitecraigs, and thornonhall meaning more money will leave ayr and aurrounding area not good
As an Englishman who has visited Ayr, it’s a treat of a place
Thanks for your comment. Glad you like Ayr.
One good thing about Ayr is it still has loads of individual small shops on the high street
Thanks for your comment. I wish I had included more shots of the small businesses.

Thanks for your comment. I should maybe have mentioned the golf as my visit coincided with the Open at Troon.

Thanks for your comment. I've never been to Ayr races yet
Nobody mentioned Robert Burns and museum at Alloway!

Subway has its best store at Ayr Central shopping centre.
Thanks for your comment. That's a useful tip!
