An Asian woman like Chan had to beat all the odds to achieve the position she has today. What a great performance.👍

Yes, she's amazing, and so eloquent and focused in her gestures! I watched her conducting the opening concert of the season with this orchestra - that was in the autumn of 2019 I think, it was broadcast live on TV and she had come in as a late replacement for the regular chief conductor of the orchestra, so there would only have been a few repetitions together. She did a magnificent programme, mostly Russian music - Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet and the Swan Lake suite, and a violin concerto with Simone Laamsma as soloist (not sure right away if that one was by Tchaikovsky too, or by Brahms?) - anyway, her confidence and ability to create clear orchestral textures and nice "grooves" was a pure joy to watch and listen to! At the time, she was the main conductor of an opera ensemble in northern Sweden, my home country (I spent some of my childhood years in the north but have since lived in the south). She has gone on to higher posts since, of course.... :)

There is something both tragic and heroic in this opening theme. A victory that has not to be known, a victory that has to be converted into an unknown pain in the chest of the composer. It is easy to think so, when you know a little bit about Tchaikovsky. And all his life he wrote such beautiful music, like this. Concealing most of the pain. Wonderful playing by the orchestra, and I like very much the conductor Elim Chan!

Staffan, you said everything to be said in 4 lines. Elim is a great conductor but she is unlucly, the great orchestras prefer something different, thats the truth..

Oh, what a fine fellow! BRAVO!!! So cleanly and efficiently executed. It's nice to listen to a well-tuned orchestra where all the instruments are audible. Once again, Bravo! To the conductor - my respect! With love from Russia!

Echt bewundernswert!

    A very good performance. Thanks!
I always fast forward to the climactic sequences in the first and 4th movements to check the performance of this monumental symphony: the first movement from 7:20 to 8:50 and the 4th from 37:28 to 38:00, seemed to me somewhat tamed and restrained with a hurried brass timing. Compare with the performance of Russian State Symphony Orchestra with the young Petrenko at the helm also available on youtube.

I recommend checking out the version on RUclips with BSO and Bernstein. Not because it’s better, actually I prefer this version. However, the BSO clarinetists are much better imo with the BSO.

Good performance ruined by constant coughing from the audience. Watching many concerts in Royal Concertgebouw, it seems to me that distractive coughing from the audiences is a definitive characteristic of this place.

Tchaikovsky's characteristic is usually the inexhaustible richness of his inspiration. This symphony, on the other hand, appears poor in musical themes. I only appreciate the ease in composing for the orchestral mass. I don't pronounce on the execution, because the symphony can't attract my attention and I don't want to compare it with alternative realizations

I liked the sound and the playing of the orchestra, but the director’s facial expressions, imho, don’t go with the mood of music. She needs a wider range to communicate better her intentions. She did a very good job... anyway...

@@@mariannevleeshouwers3031 Of course Marianne, the show... must... go on : ) I was just missing some facial/body communication...Not the most important thing, but significant... I will check for her other videos. Thanks

perhaps it could have used a little
more passion, but it was a very
solid performance with a fine young conductor who has a great
future.most certainly not an horrendous performance by any means.
