- Chinese conductor Elim Chan was the first ever female winner of the Donatella Flick Conduction Competition. In the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam she leads the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra through Rimsky-Korsakov's oriental fairytale 'Sheherazade Op. 35'.

1910th bro are you being serious... I mean it is true that this orchestra is extraordinarily well , all the talented masters are gathered. But a conductor is an indispensably important role in an orchestra. Even in Baroque figured bass pieces there is still someone playing this role.
@@th-wp7zc obviously you never played in orchestra ! Compare it to the car. No matter, how great it is ( Lambo anyone?) but without fine tuning and a skillful drive ( conductor does both) that wonderful machine is as good as an expensive toy, parked in the garage. Why do you think, the same orchestra sounds different with different conductors, even though they played that music thousand times?
One of the best conductors full stop: she's clearly worked hard to create this performance. One could remove the conductor just as one COULD celebrate Potter without Rowling, but it'd be wrong for the same reason.
She is a total mediocrity, just waving about even when it makes no sense. (Just look at 14:30 to 14:38.) Also remarkably ineffective in keeping the orchestra on track. (Just listen at 39:39.) Sad to see that women are now becoming just as bad at conducting as so many incompetent men.

It is refreshing to see such a petite girl in total command of such a magnificent orchestra playing this majestic symphony... And she is confident, brilliant, and in control! I had watched and listened to many versions of this piece. Her performance is definitely at least on par with the other maestros.
I think at the time of the video Ms Chan was over 30 years old. Refrerring to her as a "petite girl" is disrepectful. I hope it was unintentional on your part.

Brilliant rendition. I'm hearing parts and interplays I've not heard before. Also appreciate the free tempos in soloistic passages. Some performances just march straight ahead and miss all the fun.
Chan softens the edges of this, even in the ff parts and refines the parts which normally are hard sounding and maybe sibilant through most other conductors. I very much enjoyed this.
Well, you have melody and accompaniment, though through the use of counterpoint, the instruments do weave the melody in and out, telling the stories, as you say.

Being a conductor of a full scale symphony orchestra is extremely difficult profession, that requires among other things, I mentioned before, sacrifice. Very few women were able to succeed, as well as just a handful of men.

Loved it, I have a CD of this from the 80’s. My favorite classical piece. Never tire of listening to it. Excellent performance by this philharmonic and a very talented conductor.

She has learnt a great deal from Gergiev as the assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Your comment made me listen to Gergiev. Yes, there are similarities, they're going along the same path.
But, for me, Chan takes it much further. She's more detailed and more refined.
She reminds us constantly that these are tales told by a seductive woman.

Uma interpretação um pouco mais lenta, que enfatiza instrumentos muitas vezes submersos em meio aos demais.
Além disso, me parece que o spalla (a voz de Sheherazade) eleva o tom com esta se manifesta.
