Jennifer Jean Warnes (born March 3, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer. She has performed as a vocalist on a number of movie soundtracks. She was also a close friend and collaborator of Canadian singer-songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen. She has won two Grammy Awards in 1983 for the Joe Cocker duet "Up Where We Belong" and in 1988 for the Bill Medley duet "(I've Had) The Time of My Life"
Great reaction, guys. I've been delighted to hear Jennifer live twice, and interview her once. Among other things, she's known as the foremost interpreter of Leonard Cohen's songs. The Montreal native might be Canada's best songwriter (he's got strong competition from the likes of Joni Mitchell). And, yes, Cohen wrote Joan of Arc. Famous Blue Raincoat is Warnes' tribute to his songs. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Once again, you guys impress me with your choices. Buffy Sainte Marie, and then Jennifer Warnes wonderful interpretations of Leonard Cohen songs (as others have commented, immortalized on her "Famous Blue Raincoat" album. And of course, Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker recorded Buffy's "Up Where We Belong" which (I think) won best song at the Oscars. Anyway, cheers for reacting to music that many others don't!
Pretty sure you guys have unknowingly heard of Jennifer Warnes as she sang with Bill Medley on "I've had the time of my life" which was the soundtrack to the film "Dirty Dancing" starring Patrick Swayze..highly underrated singer and was a lifelong friend of Leonard Cohen who penned this beautiful but dark song.
What an amazing song. I knew the story of Joan of Arc and how sad it was that they did that to her. But I didn't know there was a song about it. To whoever requested it, I am going to download it.
This song was beautifully written by Leonard Cohen and there is an album of his songs all sung by Jennifer Warnes called “Famous Blue Raincoat” ..the album was a huge hit back in the late 1980’s and is one of the best albums I have and well worth buying/downloading.
Jennifer's long association with Leonard Cohen produced many fantastic songs. Her album "Famous Blue Raincoat", singing Leonard's songs is a classic. Saw her backing Leonard Cohen in Sydney, Australia in 1980.

so glad you reacted to Jennifer's wonderfully moving performance of this truly great song by the legendary Leonard Cohen. what a voice!

It is even better when Leonard and Jennifer sing this song as a duet

I forgot to mention that this is one of Leonard Cohen's songs.
Joe Cocker does a great version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird On A Wire". Cohen is a great songwriter, a bit of an aquired taste as a performer.
She sang with him, L Cohen, and recorded with him. And he's dead!
Judy Collins also does an outstanding version of Bird on a Wire.
No I like Jennifer Warnes she has some really good music but I don't recall ever hearing this song
