bro why did i just star bawling my eyes out watching Michelle talk ab her mom passing away and her aunt going to her concert. I am kind of in love I think lol
I agree with Locksh, KEXP sound engineers are ultra talented. They're pumpin' out killer mixdowns. Heck, prefer the KEXP mixes better than the album. Incredible artists! She oozes raw emotion, articulate, and humble. Definitely influenced by bands of the late 80's. Remind me of The Psychedelic Furs.
Diving Woman: 0:34 Road Head: 7:18 The Body Is A Blade: 17:30 Boyish: 21:30 If you're watching for the first time, don't skip the interview! It's pretty cool
Because we're so busy filming and editing all of these sessions! We barely have time to even upload it all! But thanks to those of you who do post the times.
@@kexp FWIW, I'm so glad you _do_ get them filmed and uploaded! I've seen and heard some of my favourite bands thanks to this specific channel as well as getting to find new music to get lost in ... like this band's music. OMG! Love to yous all, from me here in Finland!
When she says “I want you, and you want something more beautiful”.....I die inside she is literally a beauty.....also most of this is about her husband ? I HOPE HE AINT LOOKING AT NO HOSTESES
I discovered this band about an hour ago. I was looking on Spotify for "japanese music," hoping for traditional Japanese music. I found this instead, and thought I'd just see what it was like. It took about 10 seconds for me to be hooked. This album is fecking amazing, and I think I might be binging on this for the next week or so.
I hardly ever can say I truly like a piece of music that's new to me on my first listen but 'Diving Woman' is such a fantastically strong opener. It has these flourishes of being dreamy, shoegaze'ish, and even a little jammy in its own way. The guitars and bass sound so crisp and bright and tight and her voice is quite remarkable. Absolutely envious my cousin saw them live at The Thing in Port Townsend just a little over a week ago. Little wonder why he raved about them.
I saw Michelle in Eugene at a pizza place when she was still is high school I think.? So glad to see and hear her again. I could tell she was special. Love from Eugene!
20:11 the inflatable wind people outside of the car dealership... in all seriousness my absolute favorite band.. something about her is so relatable and her story. her sounds are so moving
18:35 I already loved the chord progression of the chorus. So simple, but so expressive. But the reverb on Michelle's guitar part in this performance really brings a new depth to the song. Captures the emptiness of depression very well. With that said, that chord progression along with her husband's guitar tone really remind of "Full Catastrophe" by Summer Salt.
She cute and so honest! It’s lovely and refreshing! Sorry for your loss losing a parent is a very sticky and hurtful experience! I’m glad music is helping you cope! Keep on spacing out!
I just discovered this GEM. The diving woman song had a shoegazey vibe to it. And I was really surprised that they actually did a tour with slowdive during the interview (25:10)
Someone mentioned flavours of the Cocteau Twins ... yep. I'm also getting the GTP-period Japan in there, as well as some China Crisis ... this has buggered me up! I really don't know why but it's got me in tears. Especially that first song ...
+KEXP Thanks for capturing this wonderful performance! And thanks to Kevin and everyone else who is involved with the impeccable engineering & sound quality! 👍👍 The only problem is that now I'll be completely obsessed with trying to find out the exact Ride Cymbal that Craig Hendrix was using for this set!!! Haha. +KEXP You guys REALLY need to figure out a way to release these performances as "KEXP Live EPs" on CD or via Downloads!!! Like KCRW's "Rare on Air" or the WXPN "Live At The World Cafe" releases! I honestly prefer most of these Live KEXP performances over the studio album tracks!!! And I'm sure there are heaps and heaps of others that would love to be able to BUY these tracks from all of these amazing artists as well. Git To It! :-P I know that figuring out the money end of it might be tricky, but you've got to be able to work out some arrangement so that you (KEXP), the artist(s), their management/label, & publisher get a cut so that everyone is happy. This music just NEEDS to be out there in a high quality, offline form (NOT just in MP3 or compressed RUclips streaming audio)! Thank you for the very high level of production quality, in addition to the excellent, insightful questions for the interviews. Cheers! - B.B.
To all the people that say "they don't make music music like the good old days"....expand your freakin minds and explore what's out there! There are so many great bands around it's nearly impossible to keep up with their brilliant inspiring stuff.
The audio engineers in these sessions don't get nearly enough credit. Mindblowing mix
locksh agree. The sound is outstanding
Kevin Suggs is a legend and pretty well-known, actually. His expertise consistently stands out miles above his peers.
I was going to say the same thing!
seriously, they do so amazing with all these bands. its wildly incredible
KEXP sound guys, always on point.
Having Japanese breakfast while watching Japanese breakfast in Japan.
KEXP is truly in a League of their own. The bands they book, the production value, the sound engineer, the interviews. Masterful.
To me, it's the world's most diverse, interesting, and professional radio.
This
It always amazes me how whenever I find a great new artist, KEXP has already had them
The guitarist is HER HUSBAND? No wonder he always has that big goofy smile on his face. :) Good for them!
plays good guitar and piano and a John Mayer look-alike
Playing music for a living with your love. It doesn’t get much better.
is the band name derived from when he eats her out in the morning ?
Pas F LOL!
@@pasf4118 Zauner isn't Japanese though

i"m always finding the KEXP sessions better than any album a band brought out. :D
Insanely good engineers!
Diving Woman is such a wall of sound. Greatness.
its the beginning repeated - Oingo Boingo's Stay.
Reminds me of the more melodic Sonic Youth songs, like “The Diamond Sea”, so good!
Absoluely agree.True greatness!!!!
one of my fav songs ever made. The outro is magical
i like the song but i don't see how it is a wall of sound, it sounds like a regular composed song.
Cheryl: the comforting energy that always brings balance to the force.
That bass
That mix
That voice
Omg
This is MUSIC!
that beautiful blue-eyed drummer!
Her voice fits perfectly for some reason, like the best of 90s songs
the bass in this is nice and strong
and his shirt is amazing too

I love melodic bass lines.

Bass lines are wonderful. Bass tone as well.
shes such a gem. protect her at all cost.
This is a dazzling performance
Yo I love how she gets super into the vocals and then just immediately gets serious, anyone else notice that? She's fucking fantastic I love her
Cheryl Waters is a national treasure
she is so lovely~
JAPANESE BREAKFAST IS THE BESTTTTTTTTTTTT
Rock on! Let me in the band!
God I love her
i love you both
Literally read my thoughts.
You and me both. Love your channel btw
I love her moreee
Her husband love her more :v

Booked tickets to see Japanese Breakfast last night and now they're on KEXP youtube? Proof Cheryl Waters is a wizard
and of course the world revolves around you mate.
ok joe literally just wanted to post a light-hearted and appreciative comment and you had to be dick about it
not how i meant to come across donny, sorry if i did
And a super-engaging host who manages to ask intelligent questions without sounding all goofy.
Diving woman is a such a tour de force. That huge, intergalactic wall of sound is such a sublime thing to behold
Put this music into space 24/7 and there will ALWAYS be interstellar peace.
Fabulous; they have an old soul vibe about them, a band this young can’t be this incredible, but they are; they’re limitless.
Boyish is so dreamy, such a nice song.
24:20 to the end, sounds like Beach House, and i love that.
I find it hard to believe this is a live mix, sounds incredible. KEXP is my few drinks goto on a Friday evening at home.

I discovered her/them through the upcoming video game Sable's trailer, which they composed the OST for.
not quite taiko and koto eh?
Welcome
I want to be Cheryl Waters
Cheryl kills as always, such a great interview...
Listen to the Groove that the bass guitar has in the first song Diving Woman Is just simply amazing!!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍
these voices are so clear. why is this not the standard????
not everyone is as talented! the audio engineers at KEXP do an amazing job.

Another pleasant surprise from RUclips......👍👏.......great sound and interesting story
Thanks also to KEXP
Best wishes ✌🌎
In my next life I want Cheryl to be my mom. Best childhood ever!
These songs brought me to tears
I finished reading Michelle's book Crying in H Mart this week and I'm discovering her music now... She's such a remarkable woman. :)
KEXP, your sound engineers are of another dimension.
I immediately bought their album after about .5 seconds of listening. I did not make a mistake.
KEXP, Cheryl and the audio engineer gang stay killing the game
Japanese Breakfast are amazing and this performance is perfect.
13:27 - Michelle talks about Devin the bassist and the inspo for Jimmy Fallon Big! which has now come full circle. Cheryl was right all along :)
Maj 7 chords... beautiful
I love KEXP .... FROM PANAMA XOXOXOXOOX.
I *LOVE* Japanese breakfast!!! This band is cool, too!
I saw Michelle in Eugene at a pizza place when she was still is high school I think.? So glad to see and hear her again. I could tell she was special.

Dancing in my dark room 4am, their music is just delightful.
gotta love the purple lights in this studio completely complimenting this music
It's REALLY nice to hear her be really honest. Makes listening more meaning full.
holy jesus LORD they are such incredible musicians
I'm getting some major Slowdive vocal vibes when they performed Diving Woman 💜
Same, they kinda got a shoegazey vibe going on in that song. especially with the guitar effects
Can def see the similarities myself.
This song makes me tear up.. but in a good way 🥲 so much emotion conveyed in her voice
Thanks KEXP all the way from Scotland. First time hearing Japanese Breakfast and love them.
WOW This is my first time listening to this band and they are amazing and the audio on this video is GREAT!!!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

Hearing echoes of The Smiths and The Sundays. Nice.
Mad love for Cheryl. She brings us great music always.
She cute and so honest!

Cheryl Waters is awesome.
So glad I discovered Japanese Breakfast! They just have such an old sound, it’s beautiful
Body Is A Blade is such a beautiful song
Such great energy - the kind of sounds you can just wrap yourself up in.
I just discovered this GEM. The diving woman song had a shoegazey vibe to it. And I was really surprised that they actually did a tour with slowdive during the interview (25:10)
Brilliant! I found this artist because they did the wonderful soundtrack for the game Sable!
incredible
The body is a blade is such a great motivational song ♥ somehow makes me feel better when i'm really down
Never heard these guys before. Lovely dreamy sound.
So happy these guys are getting the recognition they deserve.. I saw them at a tiny venue in Brooklyn 3 years ago.
These four songs just happen to be my favourite songs off the album. Thank you KEXP
Damn, I was so scared her voice was gonna crack at one point, but she freaking did it cuz she's dope as hell
I love KEXP live sessions, sometime they sound even better than studio versions!
Someone mentioned flavours of the Cocteau Twins ... yep. I'm also getting the GTP-period Japan in there, as well as some China Crisis ... this has buggered me up!
I really don't know why but it's got me in tears. Especially that first song ...
Oh my god I saw them live a month ago and this feels like being straight back to that night!
I really believe KEXP can read my mind
Haha me too!
thats what makes a good music show
Same. Never even heard of this band, was feeling 💩 and it's exactly what the doctor ordered ♥️
They already knew you were going to say that... They already liked it hehe
I need live concerts back.
I test headphones with KEXP.
Every time I listen to this it just gets better 😊👍❤
This is the medicine I needed
This is such a great, insightful interview. I love Michelle Zauner and her band, and I also love Cheryl Waters. Thank you KEXP!
I watched them on SNL last night. She seemed nervous, sound wasn't great, but I'm a new fan. Love their vibe and style.
As a Brit living in Australia, their music has an Australian indie vibe.
A nice discovery; wish her good luck, diving woman !
listening to these jams makes me wanna give everyone a big hug
She make me smile whole day
Give the sound engineer a Nobel prize.
WOW! Another stellar band I discovered on KEXP. Keep 'em coming! Kudos to the sound engineers. Every show sounds spectacular.
They opened for Slowdive!? Some lucky souls must have witnessed it, but it wasn't me.
I am Japanese and I finished eating late breakfast a little while ago.
RUclips recommended this video to me. I don't know why.
The lead guitarist is VIBING
This is a really great band! So nice to hear a great modern lo-fi indie sound.
The lighting engineers in these sessions don't get nearly enough credit. Mindblowing lighting! :-D
Great music, great interview, great mixing. Overall pretty great.
The bass player slaps so hard, dude.
What a beautiful performance ❤️
Loving Japanese Breakfast much more now.
