I didn't know who Michelle Zauner was until today...but I've been binge watching her stuff and totally hooked. She's comes across as authentic and articulate and incredibly talented. Will be ordering her book soon... Amazing story and I'm hopping along for the ride..
Michelle was able to turn her pain into amazing art for others to empathize and grieve with, and that's something special. It gives me hope when wonderful people find the success they deserve.
Wow, this is one of the only interviews on JF that I actually think is good. I'm so glad he didn't try to speak over or interrupt Michelle like he usually does. I am so glad that she is finally getting the recognition she deserves. Amazing artist, amazing author, amazing live performer.
I love this story of forgiveness. He left the band because they weren't big enough but he failed and the band forgave him and brought him back and they were able to help him fulfill his dream. That is seriously some Jesus-level of forgiveness. I hope I can be that big hearted some day.
There's nothing to forgive him for, he didn't do anything wrong. A good friend would support their friend if a good opportunity for them came their way.
As a Japanese Breakfast and BTS fan - Would love to see them collaborate...I know their music is on opposite sides of the spectrum, but it would be mind-blowing :) I am not sure Michelle dreamed this big?!?! But to see her humble beginnings, to writing her worldly acclaimed book, to the gigantic explosion of Japanese Breakfast....Michelle deserves all the recognition and accolades she is getting right now, AND MORE!!!!
Fantastic that she is getting this level of recognition. I have two Asian daughters and artists like Michelle Zauner and Mitski are the kind of role models I want them to have.
@@drbryant23 ohhh, i just was curious cuz you said that you have two Asian daughters. it just seemed odd that you'd mention your daughter's race like that lmao.
@@dinglemccringleberry6258 I was drawing a distinction - as role models for my daughters - between indie artists like Zauner, Mitski, Rina Sawayama, and, for example Blackpink or similar Kpop artists.
She’s so talented. It’s been really cool to watch her grow and find success over the years since I first discovered her music. I can’t wait to see what she does next!
I'm not a fan of her band Japanese Breakfast (NOT saying it isn't good, just not my cup of tea), and I've yet to check out Little Big League. But god I LOVED her novel. It was so open and pure. When Michelle starts talking about in this clip it makes me teary eyed again. I definitely recommend it to everyone.
Little Big League was phenomenal. Changed my life. Be sure to check em yall. Everything Michelle does is GOLD. She is also the absolute most hard working artist. So much love!
By far the best and my favorite interview by Jimmy Fallon ever. Im not even too familiar with her band only listening to a couple of songs. This is such a wholesome and genuine interview.
Such a talented young woman. I've had the pleasure of seeing her live when her first album released and shared a cool conversation with her after. I knew she was going to make it big!
I am an Army but I discovered Japanese Breakfast through her beautiful book "Crying in Hmart" after reading that book listening to her music was a must. And as an Army I am fully aware when i come across beautiful, meaningful and grammy award winning music and that is definitely J.B. !! I hope Japanese breakfast's Audience continues to grow!!
I'm proud of her. I am barely a fan since I only listened to some of her songs a few times (And I thought she was not very popular, yet) but seeing her Jimmy fallon big moment makes me happy for her. And now she's even written a book that will become a movie.
Let me tell you about myself. I have been living under a rock! I had never heard of the band until I saw SNL promo 2 days ago! OMG! I love her already! ❤️
I am so excited by this interview! Michelle Zauner's POV reminds me of a friend I had growing up whom I was and still am very fond of, Pam, who is half Thai and half Korean, who expressed not being very connected to her mother's side of the family, the Korean side of her family because she was raised by her father. I have spent the last 15 or so years watching Korean shows, and seeing women with diverse Asian cultures sharing their memories and art, seeing the media acknowledge these talented artists, show that the future is going to be bright. And that Asian Americans are going to start seeing celebrities that understand and can express their points of views and that they can relate to.
Waittttt I just started reading crying in hmart and I am now only making the connection she’s Japanese breakfast! Amazing and she went to undergrad in my hometown. I’m biased but this was actually a pretty wholesome interview.
Loved the book, purchased it for my friends as well. Michelle you are very talented both as a writer and a musician. Thank you for sharing your art with us. And by the way great shirt, the detailing on the sleeves is like no other!
Can’t wait to buy her book and support her at a future show. What an amazing, talented, and beautiful human and artist. She servers all the accolades and recognition!!
Wow, I didn't know much about Michelle but now I like her. So great to see she embraces her Korean heritage through her mom. I am sure she will be super famous soon and her mom will be proud of her somewhere up there.
I'm reading her book and it's so strange to read someone's detailed intimate and vulnerable thoughts and feeling and then see them on a late night talk show.
I just read Crying in H Mart - I bought the book because I always used to go to H Mart to get my Asian food fix for the month. Only after reading it did I discover the amazing things that Michelle did apart from writing the book, including all her albums. I loved discovering her art in this order because her book made me so emotionally invested in her and to finally see her succeed knowing her backstory is such a wonderful thing !! FIGHTING!!
I wish i could be her brother, because me and all of us proud for what she deserves after her long grief story. If i allowed by her, i wanna hug with emotional support and definitely burst into tears
I laughed so hard at the photo/story about eating hot dogs at Nathan's -- you can't take the punkrock out of someone even if you're at the Grammy's! :))
May BTS & Michelle Zauner, a collab someday! I'm hoping for their collaboration. Some how Michelle Zauner is a half korean. I love her because she's so talented.
“It’s like having conversations with my mom again, because I have to write her dialogue.” 🥺🥰
😭 ahhh if you like that line, you'll love the book! Tear-jerker for sure. I'm really anticipating a wonderful movie is she's writing the script!
Jimmy directed this conversation well and with sincerity. Michelle is a revelation and deserves all the good things. Right on!
Underline on 'sincerity'
Agree, it's one of his better interviews. Certainly better than Colbert or Kimmel.

I went to the new H Mart in our city today & reading Michelle’s book and seeing her live in concert just made my month!

Saw the band last year. Excellent show. Amazing musicians. She deserves the accolades.
Love her story of meeting BTS, definitely that was an iconic moment 💜
One of the best interviews from the Tonight Show!
Checkout Japanese Breakfast. Such a good band. Paprika is a my favorite song.v

As an Army and Japanese Breakfast fan, that picture was the highlight of my day!! Michelle looks so cute in this outfit 🥺
She is so cool, I love her.
Crying in H Mart btw started as an essay that was published in The New Yorker (which she humbly neglects to mention).
Her artistry is really something else!
what a QUEEN
Sweet ! It is like two friends hanging out and having a nice chat.
