Huge respect for Conan. He's mentioned that his daughter got him into Japanese Breakfast. I'm not surprised, but I love that he values his kids' tastes so much and is so willing to hear/learn new things.
I’m a Korean living in the UK and my son is half Korean and half British. I picked up this book after hearing some positive reviews and I must say I literally cried through from the page 1. It was impossible to keep on reading it as I found it so raw in the relatable way. ❤

Of all the interviews Conan has done over the years with A-list celebs, etc, this is by far my fave of his because it just proves how true to himself, his team, and his guests that he is. The most genuine and down-to-earth host ever, the person who probably actually maintains true, authentic friendships with all the celebs he interviews on his shows after the cameras are done rolling.
All hilariousness aside, I've grown to deeply appreciate Conan's interview acumen. He can really get to the heart of things and people open up to him in beautiful fashion.
I grew up in a very small town called Anza-Borrego. When young I couldn’t stand it because of boredom and lack of friends. But later on in life I recognized how it forced me to use my imagination and creativity. Now I’m an artist.
I love when non-famous people are being interviewed. They are actually authentic, and not the play-pretenders. I live that conan brings such people up. Trevor Noah used to do that on his show, too.
@@Berlynic Totally agree. I wouldn't say she's non-famous though haha. She's got almost 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone and charted number 2 with her NYT best-selling memoir. Funnily enough to your point, Trevor Noah already interviewed her a year ago!
Her book is a low-key fave, coming out not long after my dad passed, though it did make me think more of my relationship with my mom. I think there's something really special getting to see the way her book and story really seems to resonate with Conan, too.
Great questions, insights, and reflections. I love the way Michelle covers her mouth when she laughs. I love Conan's hilarious tangent about (and impression of) Keith Richards. But then they get back on-track and I'm completely engrossed in the conversation again. This has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts. Thankful to the YT algorithm for introducing it to me!
Never heard of her until Conan's interview and I love Michelle's outlook. Listened to Paprika and a few other songs from her band and I am hooked. I am going to order her book and let my daughter read it, maybe it will inspire her in some ways. Thank you Michelle for sharing your music and talent.
How old is your daughter? The book is pretty heavy in dealing with grief (it is largely about dealing with her mom's cancer). It's an incredible read and I highly recommend it, but just fair warning.
I’m sure Michelle would have been a little nervous appearing on this podcast knowing about all the guests that usually are well known or in the film industry, but she was so wholesome and chill as always and really easy to talk to! I’m surprised Conan and Sona didn’t mention Crying in H Mart being made into a movie - I’m really excited for it and I reckon it will take the appreciation and love of Michelle’s memoir to a whole new level. ❤

How's it feel to stand at the height of your powers to captivate every heart? Projecting your visions to strangers who feel it, who listen, who linger on every word?
Conan showed some much humanity in this interview. He can do a proper interview as he’s a great listener when he’s not always trying to make jokes. Those are funny but sometime he shows humanity like this. Great one!
Understandable...But also note how the Hongdae crowd over here (both artists and clubbers, easily the most progressive slice of the young Korean populace) almost immediately accepted her entirety once they knew her background and journey as a musician: Michelle, the band, and her life story well before the book was even published...and by that time, the band name didn't bother them at all.
For the same reason as you, I also feel uncomfortable when she suddenly talks about Korea. It feels like she's just jumping on the recent popularity of K-culture. Although she has the freedom to express what she feels as an artist, if she understands even a little bit about the uniqueness of the relationship between Japan and Korea, it's really strange for her to suddenly write a book like this while promoting herself under Japanese Breakfast as a band. It's hard to shake off the feeling that she used to ride on the trend of Japanese culture before Korean culture became popular. It feels like she changed her direction towards what benefits herself more.
