Thank you for inviting her Conan. Michelle you are loved!
Cool that Conan interviewed a young artist hope he has more on the pod
I agree. I hope more modern artists can come on the show. Michelle Zauner (Japanese Breakfast) is really cool.
Dagger Face next time?
Shes 33
@@rax9874 Still young to Conan. But also, her band is relatively young in the industry
I've always thought Conan was a great interviewer. However, seeing him interview a musician in detail is absolutely fantastic. He can switch from being very funny to actually getting really interesting replies from the interviewee far more so on a podcast than he ever could on TV. I really hope he does more musician interviews.
Eduardo was just the right person that Michelle needed at the right time to explain MIDI 😅

that was the worst explanation of MIDI. What does MIDI mean?
musical instrument digital interface. MIDI allows you to play a Synth Keyboard or any instrument that's Synthed (like a guitar synth ) into the computer program like Cubase, or Protools and the music will be recorded and notated if desired.
@@rickjust Yeah, his explanation of MIDI was actually an explanation of a piano roll editor in a DAW. MIDI is the protocol for sending/receiving note and program change messages. That's it.
@@rickjust that’s the original meaning from the 70s. These days MIDI is often used as a generic term when discussing about tracks that are stored as note/controller data within the DAW. I feel like using the word ”language” rather than ”protocol” isn’t that bad considering the audience.
Eduardo doesn't know what MIDI is, but he was the right person to give a wrong answer very confidently
@@Ishai1 Bingo. Honestly, this triggered that weird thing where you are frustrated at the lack of knowledge but also dying laughing at how funny it is but also really frustrated still that you can't be there to correct it but knowing that funny is better in this case. omg what a fence.
Eduardo coming in clutch like the 🐐 he is
I loved this episode and it got me hooked on this new genre for me "indie pop!" and I love her band Japanese Breakfast. Every time I hear the song "Be sweet" I just want to dance! And I am NOT a person who dances! This is by far, absolutely the best podcast out there in my opinion!
She is lovely.
Eh
@@ernieramos2792 people always say when someone judges or comments on someone else it says more about them than the person in subject. I kinda think that’s really true in certain situations.
@@vt4979 oh the irony. I think your comment implies a lot more than mine does. I never heard of this person, this was my first time seeing her. I guarantee I'm "Eh" to a lot of people that I meet for the first time also. There is nothing wrong with that.
@@ernieramos2792 bro how dare you have an opinion!! on the other hand, what they're saying is also true, doesn't make your opinion invalid though

Ok, now can I please hear the 'flang thabda thabda thabda'? sounds amazing
"I might have to leave soon to close the library" look! LOL
This guy's is pretty funny he needs his own tv show
come on man, be more creative. i've read this same comment so many times
TV show? What is it?
Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Around since the 70's or whatever. My first MIDI expansion card was for an 8 bit bus. It's still installed in my Swan XT 10 computer bought in the 80's. Fun times.
I would adore a series where Conan dives into music theory or production
I used to think theory would limit me because it would be too confining, but honestly, it has opened up more avenues for me in terms of more INTENTIONAL complexity, rather than stumbling on it. There is some surprise to it that's lost, I admit, but it was a good sacrifice for having more confidence in knowing where a song could go based on knowing scales and modes etc.
Conan’s kids are blessed to have video of their mom and dad meeting each other 🥹
I'm in the process of learning theory and its been so freeing it's incredible.
Wish I had done it many years ago....
whats music theory?
@@michaeljacksin9367 Google or Bing will tell you.
@@michaeljacksin9367 A theory of music.
@@michaeljacksin9367 It's a roadmap to music. so that instead of getting to the sound or vibe you want by ear, feel or luck. You can plan out how a certain kind of music piece will unfold.
Conan: I need a teacher. I don't know how it all works.
Me: You need Rick Beato.
This honestly would be a great music guest for this show
I’m actually really surprised that Conan said he’s never even heard of MIDI.
Tbf he was more into americana or folk so not a lot of use for MIDI
@@minister2965 Still, that guy has a huge amount of common knowledge, so I was surprised too. Guess there's knowledge gaps in even the most knowledgeable people
@@famatu The video is about guitar advice so does MIDI have something to do with music? Haven't watched the video yet, but I wanna take a guess. I've never heard of MIDI.
That's kinda nerdy
I'm near the same age as Conan and also a mainly self taught guitarist. I have heard of MIDI but never understood it. If I was going to write a song I think I would use it. But then again I would just get my daughter to transpose the music if I did.
Conan watching the interpreter instead of meg the stallion is quite funny
3:35 Conan rules at synthesizing complex topics.
Yeah, and saying ‘without knowing thats what you getting’. That was like explaining universe like Hawking and assume its just a hippy stuff. I assume suspending cord on pc waaaaaay more complicated when you compare it irl playing
Conan O'Brien close enough to the stage at a Megan The Stallion concert to see the sign language interpreter is wild.
He was in the VIP area, which I'm assuming is damn near on the stage
Guitar me is glued to this conversation.
my god this crossover is blowing my mind
Conan wrote tons of comedy songs
Minty the Xmas candy cane!
♫Little plastic turtles, sitting along the shelf...♫
@@misterguy9002 Pretty sure Brain Stack wrote that.
Maybe just the lyrics, not the music.
Late Night Cowboy is a favorite of mine
Someone should show Conan the sign language lady that interpreted Rap god by Eminem live😅
Conan is a total guitar buff 😊🎸
I hope Eduardo gets to host a Team Coco podcast one day
Maybe he can learn what MIDI is by then.
Learning a little music theory will not inhibit you! If you already play, it wouldn't take long to learn the basics in a way that will be very useful, and make playing more fun. There are plenty of great online resources, though picking through them is a challenge just because there's so much.
MIDI was originally the name of a computer communication protocol to connect musical instruments with computers. It's used all the time and as with everything, the poor dudes and dudettes that created MIDI have had to deal with people using the term incorrectly. But that's life in the big city. I use it incorrectly too. Just wanted to highlight this. The acronym stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface.
@3:50 I wanted to shout Beato!
midi is like if sheet music had sound when you tap one of the notes on the staff. all you need is a good ear to use it. dont need to know the names of anything, which is so cool
Is there any way to watch the full episode in video form?
I live in Bergen, Norway. And just now I find out I missed conans visit here... I'm ruined, my favorite ginger visited and I missed it😩
I must know where Sona’s Queen sweater is from!!!
Leave it to Conan to help us boomers learn of computer composing.
she's very beautiful, and cute
I don't her or her music, but she sounds lovely. I'll try to look her up.
Eduardo is a Mariners fan... I love the guy even more 🌚 Myyy ohhhh myyy
Why is Conan not currently on TV? Serious question.
Because he makes a $150 million podcast deal with SiriusXM for 5 years.
Getting ‘What if Keanu was KeanA’ vibes. (That’s a compliment.)
❤❤❤
Very good 👍 👍😂
I love how Eduardo didn't explain MIDI at all and what he did say just made it more confusing, even for me, who uses MIDI
he explained it perfectly, he just used technical terms
WTH?? strange how two worlds collide

would you like to get your tote bag!!!
Genius!
It blows my mind that Conan has never tried to write a song.
She looks and speaks a lot like Jack white!
My favorite Conan song is little turtles
Me with my non-musical-Rick-Beato-only-watching brain: "THERES NO SUSPENDED 7THS OR 9THS DUMDUM"
Norah Jones, now Michelle Zauner, finally more interesting guests
I can't believe anybody thinks knowing more things would make you less creative. Odd that this myth still persists amongst some musicians.
agreed but I think its because the more you understand or learn about something like music theory it can be like a colouring book rather than you drawing on your own. it creates boundaries or a more constructive mindset if that make sense.
Learning music theory helps. Then again it's only 12 notes. It's a language with only 12 letters.
MIDI is a device communication tool, not a musical creative development tool which automatically format a particular sound. MIDI talks to each piece of gear for control and sequence. The issue is not with MIDI, it's with some of the interactive software which makes music easily programable with a mouse click or a swipe of the iPad without knowledge of musical theory or previous musical experience. In the right hands, it's very creative... In the wrong hands very... not good.. lol
Hey Conan, I teach music theory at a DJ school and if I can teach DJs music theory I can teach you.
Any chance you might have www.youtube.com/@RickBeato on your podcast sometime? He's a rock/jazz/pop guitar guy, who's produced a ton of artists' albums, and who's taught music theory at university, and on RUclips, he has what looks like a killer MIDI setup in his studio, and he has a million stories.
You know what i find interesting about Sona? She isn't like, classically beautiful by traditional standards, but she is one of the most attractive people I can think of, both visually and personality-wise.
Okay NOW I see why they need Eduardo.
They don't know what MIDI is.
Try to have Paul Rodgers as a guest! I would be eternally grateful
If Conan was John Lennon, Michelle would be a possible Yoko...
If you learn music theory your compositions will come out better and more professional! You're welcome!
Who the heck is this?
I think comparing MIDI to a slide guitar might've helped Conan understand a little more quickly, not that it took long.
Both of them did a pretty crappy job of explaining MIDI, TBH. The way I've explained it that makes sense to a lot of people is that it's like a computerized version of player piano scrolls, where you can click to create notes, drag their lengths to set up timing, assign the MIDI to any sound you want, and push play. Of course, that is also simplified, but it gives people a much better idea of what people mainly do with MIDI.
It sucks that chumbawumba sold out so hard that no one's knows they were a fantastic anarcho-punk band before tub thumping.
Didn’t Conan write a great “wash your hands” song for COVID?
That Chumbawamba take is actually astonishingly bad.
People know them for Tubthumping but they are a band with quite incredible music that had addressed many, many issues.
From racism (Waiting for the bus), over homophobia (Homophobia), to materialism (On Ebay) and many many more.
On the surface they seem like a one hit wonder when in essence one of their worst songs is the most famous one.
They are amazing and worth a deeper dive.
Nice try Chumbawamba.
sounds like a guy thats pissing the night away
yeah but they were talking specifically about 'vulnerable'. They didn't say they don't have songs about all that stuff you mentioned. Never found them amazing tbh, remind me of the sugarcubes but with zero singers instead of one
Damn straight. Check out Time Bomb.
Conan, I will give you guitar lessons. I can teach you music theory and how music works. Call me :)
Funny how Michelle looks like Jack White...🤷♂
These people need to do their homework on Chumbawamba.
edit: I somehow managed to miss Michelle correcting herself. But still everyone go educate yourselves on the band
Yeah, most people think they are a one hit wonder while they are an incredible band with a lot of depth.
They're the anarcho band that betrayed the movement. When you have people like Penny Rimbaud demonstrating what the ideal arc of the anarcho punk looks like, it's no wonder Chumbawamba didn't leave the same legacy.
@@GenteelCretin Being an anti-vaxxer kook makes the end of the arc look rather shitty

Should have gotten guitar advice from the best guitarist to sit in that chair, Slash.
I always thought Conan’s is an ass. Too sarcastic, but he is good and sincere with the artists. I enjoy all interviews.
there’s nothing unusual about a librarian type signing the raunchy ‘Stallion stripper song. nerdy NPR type democrats have long politically and awkwardly embraced the ‘hood.
wowww Chumbawumba slander!? I know Ms. Apolitical not talkin🙄 she hasn't come within a mile of their social conscience
That was probably the worst explanation of MIDI ever. But I suppose it worked anyway somehow. :)
"It's how all modern music is made. With computers!"

My thoughts exactly. Oh, that explains how boring music is today. Apparently, all the "hits" on your radio are created by the same 2 guys.

Conan ultimately brings people back to his brain and now everything revolves around that brain. It’s the Ptolemaic problem. That the world revolves around you (or the Earth) rather than the sun. Copernicus understood that it’s not about you. Conan hasn’t arrived there yet. 😅
@@kevinl3875 It’s his bit. He’s self-centered as a bit. With Conan pretty much everything in his public persona is a bit. I’m sure he’s a great guy in private but as a public figure he’s consistently hilarious-to me. 😂
Genuinely don't understand the appeal of Japanese Breakfast. Just incredibly boring music
I never even heard of it. But I can't stand most music from 1979 on.
It's very 80’s J-Pop style which many like but some other genre listener might not.
Just like heavy metal is not everyone's cup of tea. No need to hate it just cause you don't like it.
I don't understand the appeal of a man in a cheap Buzz Lightyear costume mixing cake batter with his erect penis and going "MMMM MESSY WESSY" over and over again until the words have lost all meaning, Nick.
Weird, that's how most people feel about your "music".
@@DolphinsAreBetterThanHumans I'd rather get shingles on my groin than to listen to that crap.

Major chords sound happy, minor chords sound sad/evil. That's how it was put to me years ago.
And you have Radiohead, happily melancholic
put very simply, but it highly depends on context. minor chords can also sound kind of happy, but maybe in a more longing, contemplative way
euh MIDI is not a language, it's a protocol :)
Yeah, that explanation was a trainwreck. People see "MIDI track" and don't quite understand what that means, when it would be good to know for anyone using a DAW.
@Honyopenyoko he is, but his description is still completely wrong. It's very easy to dumb it down and be correct, but that's not what his description was.
For example, you could say MIDI is a way for musical instruments to communicate which notes were played electronically.
