Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

We learned about Thomas Muir at school in the 1970s, in the old Scottish O Grade History. The unit was called something like 'Scotland in the Age of Enlightenment'. ' Thomas Muir and the Radicals' springs to mind. The 18th century threw up remarkable ideas and individuals in the home countries and in Europe. All credit to Bruce for bringing Muir the popular media, but if half of you guys had paid attention at school you would have heard of Muir already! And it's no excuse being young! Lot's of historians have covered this ground so no big secret really to anyone who is even slightly curious about this formative era of Scottish and British history. A contemporary described Edinburgh of the time as 'hotbed of genius'. If I recall correctly it slipped from the school History curriculum sometime during the so-called Curriculum for Excellence ( so loved of SNP wallahs, ironically). I argued for it's retention as I was a small cog in that process, but I was out-gunned by competing priorities. There is so much history and not enough time to learn it.

Hi Bruce. Great presentation. Pity that this film was so short when there was so much controversy regarding Thomas Muir of Huntershill. I have been a fan of his since I first heard the song written by Adam McNaughton. His trial is still seen as as one of the greatest farces in Scottish legal history. Just one more thing to mention I was astonished to learn that when he was found guilty that he was granted 'Gentleman's' status. He was given the top flat of the Tollbooth and a servant to prepare his meals. He also had unlimited visitors with virtually unrestricted access ( it is suggested that one of his visitors gifted him a loaded pistol). He was held there for almost a year whilst awaiting transportation. Whilst being transported he had his own cabin and dined with the ships officers. It was also reported that he was allowed ashore in Rio where the ship collected supplies. Very interesting story although not quite sure if we will ever know the full truth.

Tremendous video Bruce! Well done, as always! I knew of Thomas Muir but you filled in so many of the blanks in my knowledge that I looked into it a little further just now.
I noticed that he was the man at the top of the monument's list of men. Usually, that means that the remains are undocumented or not recovered, yet his death in Chantilly is well known. Found out that they're not sure where or if he was buried! He died a hero of France but he was not Catholic, so the Catholic graveyard of the town would not allow him to be buried there. Perhaps a good thing, as the old graveyard is now a parking lot! Still, that means that Muir's final resting place is not known as far as I can tell. Our fierce warrior for the rights of the people was perhaps purposely obscured, even by France, so peace for the living could carry on. (At least until Napoleon!) I will remember Thomas Muir in my heart for that reason alone. I find it fascinating that my Scottish father imparted the same political ideas In my head from a young age, so his ideas remain open in the minds of many peoples. Perhaps that is his true legacy.

Hey Bruce. I just did my genealogy. I never knew my father. So it was pretty fulfilling for me, and quite fascinating to solve the mystery, albeit somewhat difficult. Turn out my dad is very Scottish. Cummings and Nix(McNickolls), The Nix line was traced to the Gibson's and I guess Robert the Bruce is my 24th great grandfather. Stewarts on paternal side, and maternal side through the Ervin name, and Russell. The Cummings line is related to the McLeod's and Stewarts too. It was crazy to see so many Scottish names. Dalmahoy was a big one I still can't find a lot of data on.. anywho.. what a rabbit hole this has been. Thanks for the uploads my guy.

I'm a student of Thomas Payne, and so have a passing familiarity with Thomas Muir. What I wouldn't give to be a wee mouse, eavesdropping on the conversations between the two men.
What would Muir have accomplished if his life hadn't ended so abruptly. No one can say for sure, but I'd like to think that power being returned to the people, would have happened far sooner, and much more completely.
Glad to hear much more about Thomas Muir Bruce. He and Payne left a lasting impact on the Western Civilization far too few fully understand.

Paine was a sworn enemy of the corrupt, brutal Hanoverian regime in Britain and was himself tried (in absentia) for sedition and sentenced to death. He got away to France, though and was elected to the National Convention, helping to draft the first republican constitution. Like Muir, Paine opposed the execution of the king and narrowly escaped the guillotine himself by a misplaced chalk mark on his cell door and the fall of Robespierre. I'm glad that Muir and Paine met. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall.

I knew the name, Thomas Muir, but have no idea where I learned about him. Reaching his educational goal 79 years after death, is quite an achievement. 😉

    His is quite a story.
A bit of a wild man who did things his way and had a healthy disrespect for incompetent superiors.

as a weird American my brain is trying to make me pronounce Huntershall as ‘hunter shall’ as in, a hunter shall do this… a hunter shall do that… a hunter shall hunt the red stag with his .303 British or his 6.5x55 Swede rifle😅 Later on, hunter shall repair to the hunters’ hall to cook a big fat nutritious red stag steak!😅
