Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

At this stage I’m questioning why Bruce hasn’t been snapped up by a TV channel to present a documentary. He’s a natural and so interesting to listen to. The accent makes it 10x better too!
edit: I've seen the replies and I agree with the majority's opinion that if Bruce worked for a channel he would be under much more control and not have the freedom he does now to decide what topics he covers. It's great we have RUclips to watch independent content from people like Bruce.
Agreed!
I'm falling in love with all scottish accents.
I'm kind of glad he hasn't, right now he can make whatever videos & edits he wants, with some control I assume give to groups who he's partnering with for individual videos such as the museums he films in.
I doubt a channel would permit him the same level of control he has now, they'd be the ones calling the shots at the end of the day.
That's my worry anyway.
who watches tv anymore
He has a genuine passion for our country and it's history, which is so obvious in his videos. But equally it's his way of putting it over, it's not a lecture, it's like he's chatting with you, personally, the "amateur" level, which you can't get if you have a film and production crew.
I'd like to see him doing professional documentaries, I believe he'd be very popular, as long as he doesn't lose his own unique style.
I do like Tony Robinson's programs on history, he has a similar relaxed style, despite the large professional crew that follows him, so it can be done

@Martyn On a trip to Shetland?
My wife and I lived in Shetland for 10 years from 1974-1984. The younger two of our three bairns were born in Shetland. It's an amazing place! We lived in Trondra, the small island just to the south of Scalloway harbour. I taught in Scalloway Junior High School and our bairns started school in the SJHS Primary department. It's all a long time ago, but Shetland still has a very important place in my heart!
Very cool story, thanks for sharing!
Drugs over run it now anyone with sence got the fuck out about 10-15 years ago hahah
Please do a video on the Orkney isles, my home. So much history to cover! Knap of howar (possibly the oldest surviving stone settlement in Northern Europe), Skara brae, Ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe, tomb of the Eagles, dozens of Iron Age Brochs, Pictish stone carvings, the legend about the Picts first settlement in Scotland, the arrival of the vikings, the earldom of Orkney, the Battle of Papdale, scapa flow in both world wars and loads more to discover aswell :) also loads of nice pubs and restaurants to sample some of our local food and whisky
I've got a soft spot in my heart for the Picts. Would love to visit Orkney isles.
They've closed the tomb of the eagles to visitors now 😕
Yes please! My late husbands however many greats grandfather was from the Orkneys
I worked in Shetland for a year in the early 1980's. BP were building an oil and gas terminal at Sullom Voe. We use to go to Lerwick sometimes at the weekend. Found the locals very friendly and they don't like to be called Scottish but Shetlanders.
I similarly worked and lived in Shetland for 2 years in the early 80's. Fantastic place, wonderful people
Oh that Scotland/Shetland thing was made clear to me right enough
It is also Shetland not the Shetlands. I'm amazed u weren't told that as well.
Yes, and I got that with Orcadians as well. They have their own view of themselves and their history mostly through their shared Scandic roots..
Aye...history rankles on😁
There are 2 places in Scotland that awe and amaze me Rosslyn Chapel and Shetland. I cannot get enough of either. I have been to Shetland about 20 times and I find something new on every trip. It is not easy to get to Shetland, but well worth the effort.
Aye one trip's not enough
Its easy to get there if you live in scotland. Plane from edinburgh or glasgow. Journey time 1 hr 20mins. You can always get the overnight ferry from aberdeen
History of Shetland in 10 Minutes? Impossible! I had to keep multiple browser tabs open to learn more about all the wonderful places you visited. Those Shetlanders got much more than their money's worth. Tech notes: So happy to see it in 4K; writing/camera/drone/editing/production work was best ever!
Ah you're kind George
That drone footage really adds something, doesn't it.
I am proud to say my father was a Shetlander, born in Voe. Spent a number of Summers as a child, absolutely love the Isles.
They were lovely when we were up
Fantastic! SO interesting. Looking forward to more. Thanks to Promote Shetland and Scottish History Tours. 🏴
More to come!
Ive been too Shetland visited my father's side of my family.
Fell in love with the Shetland Isles.
Toured Shetland on my old firestorm.
Camped every night, it was incredible.
I have travelled vicariously this year to: England, Germany, Edinburgh, Orkney, Shetland, Glasgow. I can't wait to see more of this world! Thanks Bruce for being an informative tour guide.
Wonderful!
Looking forward to more on Shetland ,the Orkneys are well worth a video or three as well
I'll await their call😁
It's not the Orkneys it is Orkney.
A great intro video to one of my favourite places. I spent over a month visiting the historical sites in the Shetlands and didn't even scratch the surface. How about an episode about the Shetland Bus of WW2 an heroic campaign that deserves a wider audience? That's after you've done the Mousa broch and the Jarlshof sites, of course. Too much for one lifetime? Well, maybe.
Yes, the Shetland Bus, please!
I'm already home, so I'm afraid you're getting what's already in the can😜
"Shetland" - not "the Shetlands" if you don't want to upset Shetlanders :p
@@Nastyswimmer Thank you XD I haven't been back in a decade or so and it still gets me!
Love this history, ah Shetland❣️
My family in Lossiiemouth are convinced they are Viking related and have Shetland often on their minds, thanks ❗️
A lot of us on the east coast highlands are viking stock
True
I grew up in Shetland, I can't imagine that I'd have had a better childhood anywhere else. Of course there's more to Shetland than history, archeology and tradition. Stunning landscape, secluded beaches with crystal clear water and wildlife, mainly marine and birds can be amazing.
My great grandfather William Joseph Moodie was from Weisdale in Shetland, he was born in 1869, & I have visited Shetland 5 times & it's well worth visiting.
I went to Shetland in 1983, 1984, 1987, 2003 & 2004 & I travelled by ferry from Aberdeen each time, which is a 12 hour journey.
I attended Up Helly Aa in January 2003, & it was quite a spectacle, & I recommend it to others.
William Joseph's son Noel Thompson Moodie visited Shetland in 1974, along with his 2 sons Jo Moodie & Micheal Moodie & they all thoroughly enjoyed their stay.
I love watching his videos. I have learned more about Scotland watch his tours then I ever have reading books or watching the history channel. Plus I just love his voice, how excited he is when he talks about the history of Scotland.
Ah thanks Stacie
Shetland looks so fuzzy like you could pet it and the stones of the communal area are so worn they're about round. simply beautiful , wow
Would love to visit someday. I think far too little attention is paid to our earliest history, which is also our longest, and it looks like the Shetland's has it in spades.
Do the double get the ferry have a few days on Orkney then head up to Shetland you trip over history at every 100 steps up there
@@pamelaadam9207 Do the treble, get a ferry to the Faeroes too 👍
Nah skip Orkney. Why would I want to stay in a like of shot for two days when I could go straight to the important stuff
It's not the Shetlands ITS SHETLAND
My bucket list just got so much longer I had to staple another sheet of paper to the bottom of it to make more room.
Brilliant video. Your excitement is palpable, and completely justified!
😂😂😂 Fill that bucket
Another great episode.Thank you for making it and sharing it. I have an Irish background but am very interested in all the Celtic history of Britain and Ireland and the Isle of Man. Your channel is the best for Scottish history and your style of presenting the history is perfect.
Ah thanks Peadar
Are you interested in England's Celtic history?
@@davidgreen6490 yes indeed. But in all honesty I don't know much about the Celtic peoples of Britain and Ireland. Any information is exciting to me. Are there any books about this or websites? I didn't mention England because I was referring to the Celtic peoples and the English people had different origins but I do realise that Celtic people lived all over Britain but I thought they were forced away or moved from what we know as England or were assimilated into the new arrivals into England. So yes, I would love to know about the Celts in England. Boudicca was a Celt and has such an interesting story. I live in England on the Midlands so Celtic history from there would be particularly of interest to me. As you can tell I don't know much about the Celts in Britain and Ireland which is why I love this RUclips channel about Scottish history. History in general interests me.
Although there are remnants and some impressive remains like Mousa Broch, the arrival of our Nordic ancestors swamped and smothered Shetland like a wave.
Some so-called experts speak about the "Norse era" but the reality is we're still here(btw Up-Helly-Aa is a joke).
My first ancestor is a man from Unst in 1450 called Hendrich Hendrichsson and hundreds of other Shetlanders can trace their family trees back to Norse ancestors.
I'm glad you spoke about the oppression we suffered at the hands of a certain class of obnoxious scots as they clawed our land into their hands because it was truly a dark, dark chapter.
The Old Norse name for Shetland is Hjaltland and there's a fjord that leads into Bergen called Hjeltefjorden.
It simply means "the fjord to Shetland" or "the Shetland fjord".
Depends on what you mean with Up Helly Aa as a joke. Is it 'a tractional Viking ceremony'? No, it's a Victorian fancy, but it has become a cultural facet. Is is a joke in that people hold so preciously to all the jarls being male and basically needing to be related o someone to get in? Yeah, that's a joke.
@@KismetLizard It's held up as a celebration of our viking heritage but I find it an embarrassment when I look around at our Nordic neighbours. Just a few weeks ago a Lerwick Jarl-to-be thought Tórshavn was in Norway.......
A great informative video as always. Shetland and Orkney are 2 of the most interesting places on our great islands I want to visit
Funnily enough I was going to ask you to do a video about Shetland. Great timing! I've been watching the tv show and I've been trying to learn more about this island.
Brilliant
Such a thoroughly interesting subject, Exquisitely presented and produced film Bruce, riveted to my armchair with a brew and also a tunnocks. 😊. Love the humour too.
Thank you. Excited for the next. 👍🏻
Thanks Dave
Brilliant that you've been Commissioned, they know class when they see it. 👍

The timing of this video is suberb as soon i'll be visiting Shetland. And something already tells me i'll regreat only chosing 3 days for the visit.
Aye, it's not enough
Great video as always. Love learning Scottish history. 5:36 am in North Carolina watching you. Have a blessed day!!
I was in the Shetland Isles in 2013. Lovely amazing place with wonderful people ❤️
Went with my dad in July. He worked in Sulom Voe when me and sis were little. Dad was my personal tour guide. Saw loads of it. What an amazing place. We also went to Unst. It was great. Usually head south. What an experience x
Been hoping you’d get to Shetland. Great presentation! My 3xgreat grandfather John Nisbet was from Unst. In fact, if you get back there you can stay in the croft he was born in, Hannigarth. It’s now a holiday let!
A whole episode filmed in Unst coming later
For sure I'll spend many days visiting all of Shetland! Thank you!
Thanks Bruce, still the best purveyor of Scottish history in the short form. Did I spy an Otago Highlander's t-shirt? Good man yourself!
Aye, hope to get down to Dunedin and watch them again in 2023

Glad you enjoyed it!
"but partrick, he was still a bastard".....true in form, true in nature as ma granny would say.

Class mate as always 🏴
Ah thanks Connor
Thanks, Bruce, for this wee tour! I would love to see and learn more. I've been to Orkney, but haven't made it all the way to Shetland... yet!
There are more Shetland videos to come
Was there back in august of 2021. Working on moving there. Freakin love it. My Norwegian heritage settled there on their way to the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴.
Thank you so much for sharing this interesting video. From a friend in the forests of the Pacific Northwest coast- much appreciated!
You're welcome
I was born in Shetland so I had to watch!
So glad you showed St. Ninian's, it's a place where my Sooth-Moother come Shetlander Gran always said "was the closest place to heaven on Earth"
Aye bonny

That's what we try to do
I think this is my #1 video 👍. What an exciting and adventurous opportunity for you and the Shetlands! Such historical gems every where you turn.💗
It's an incredible place
Yes Bruce, I’ve been to Shetland. Lived there in fact, worked on the infamous “White Hoose” building for SIC. Lived there happily for 18 months first on Commercial Street in Lerwick, then moved in to board with friends in Bressay. A veteran of 3 Up Helly Aa’s now and have climbed all round the island (mainly sea cliffs). Not been back in about 10 years, but the place and it’s people have a special place in my heart. I’m from Newcastle upon Tyne and loved every minute of living and working there.
Love it ❣️Thank you❣️Tell us more about The Shetlands🙏🏻
Yes thank you thank you 👍
Thank you for all your videos. I get to tour Scottland through your eyes. Wonderful❤
Love Shetland, have visited twice. Leaves an impression on the soul.
I live in Canada but my roots are in Scotland. Could you do a documentary on Aberdeenshire? There are lots of ancient hill forts, standing stones, and ancient castles. I'd love to see that. You do an amazing job. I love every story
I think I've made a few up that way

Well done for all you do, Bruce you are easy to listen to but most importantly you are not afraid to take criticism if you’re not exactly right I applaud you
Oh shit who's criticising ?
Ive been, just before the pandemic and if it wasnt for family illness i would have been a few times more. Its my new best place in the world. Based in lerwick my partner and i would jump on the local buses and take little trips. Turning every bend on the road was an eye opener, the views were magnificent. Vast open spaces. The people, the food and yes the freshest air you will ever breath. The place is unique. When we are free again, we will be back. I love the island of crete, been over 50 times but not been for years, but shetland is something else. Because im selfish lol, hopefully most people will keep going to the med, for the sun and the beaches, nothing wrong with that, but shetland is something else. I wish i had been drawn to her years ago
I just moved here with my family. Best decision ever.
I've been here 12 years, nowhere beats it.
Im in gibraltar at the moment. Unique, but ah shetland. Lucky you
Appreciate your interesting and fun video! Slainte!
💙🏴💙
I was in Shetland for work during tight COVID restrictions and was surprised by how flat it was, having been to Skye. It was still striking though, and the light is different and more changeable than anywhere else I’ve been.I also had a wonderful curry in a Nepalese restaurant in Lerwick. Why was there one hat on a shelf in the car hire office and nothing else? Do they also do heid attire hire?
The olso have crew buses 17 seaters for hire if you go up with a few of you
@kevinhand 😂😂
I pitched my tent in Staneydale Temple last year for a night or two. Very good spot indeed!
I have a ring that was made in Shetland based on a treasure trove find that the local people hid from the Vikings before they conquered the island, I would like to visit Shetland one day and go to the Viking festival.
Very interesting video! Looking forward to more on Shetland, thank you, Bruce.
This was very interesting as usual.
I saw you walking past st giles cathedral with your crew yesterday, Bruce! Looking forward to seeing what history you cover in the capital city. All the best. Michael. 👋
There's a video about Edinburgh Fringe coming out on Saturday
You’re a bloody legend mate!
Been in Shetland since I’ve been a bairn only 12 years ago but… I don’t think I’m ever going to leave 🤩🤩
I am so looking forward to yet another vlog of Shetland. A very interesting place to visit. I’ve never been to Europe, Bruce, but would love to visit all of Scotland, including Shetland. The history in your areas is so interesting as actually that is where a lot of Americans stem from, when you think of it. all over Europe, especially the eastern parts of Europe, from the far south up to far north.
You should come
Amazing. Can't wait to see your video on Jarlshof, Bruce.
Great video mate what an incredible place! 👍🏴
Brilliant Bruce, great video and Shetland looks incredible. Cheers.
Loved this posting Bruce. Still waiting for Henry St Claire. A century before Columbus.
I'm from Australia, and after watching this and Shetland. I would like to visit more. My friend keep asking when I visit Scotland again and Possibly Shetland.

Fantastic!
I'll need to get a weekend away to Shetland. Aye and I might just bring the family, and a fishing rod.🎣 👌
This is fabulous💚 Thank you, Bruce! I can't wait to visit Shetland and look forward to more of your tour videos.
Glad you enjoy it!
Shetlaun is a lot more than 600 hundred years of viking occupation. Innse Cat has an Irish hermitage culture too , much of Scotland can claim a Scandinavian heritage, we all have a varied heritage!
The video helped in that.
Looking forward to those next Shetland videos, that was a cracker Bruce 😊
Thank You. ❣️🕊💓🕊

This channel is brilliant I love history and you've brought it to life thank for all the hard work that you put into it
Ah that's brilliant Janet
We visited Shetland & Orkney back in 2019. What a blast we had. We actually stayed in the Valley B&B where you did. When I saw it on your video I had to double-check. We highly recommend it as a base to explore "the end of the earth". You must eat at Frankie's Fish & Chips! Fantastic grub fresh out of the sea! I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos! I'm first-generation American off Scottish parents who emigrated back in 1951. Great job Bruce. Keep up the great work pal!
Thanks Bruce.i found the whole video fascinating and I feel bad that I have seen so little of my own country,it looked absolutely stunning.❤️🏴
Another brilliant story.. thank you..
This is awesome. So the family story on bio dads side is that we originated in Sweden. We migrated to Denmark and lived as Danes for generations. Then we migrated to Scotland and inhabited Lochalsh, and the Shetland and Orkney Islands and we fought over Skye, and that we were Mattesson with two S's in Sweden and we were Clan Matheson in Scotland. Other family members say this is not possible so there is an argument over descending from Clan Matheson. But my bio mom bought me a second dna test that gives the locations your dna comes from and mine does include Orkney AND Shetland islands :) Looks like the test settles that debate. Fac Et Spera!
Such interesting history!! Thank you so much for bringing these stories to life!
Our pleasure!
Can’t wait for this series 🤩
You are beyond amazing. Never a dull moment. You make history come alive. Thank you🙏❤️👍
Wow, thank you Benita
I'm looking forward to the new TV show, It's always sunny in Shetland staring Bruce! Lots of really interesting information and I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos.
You and me both!
I've been waiting for a video like this about Shetland! 10 points man
Thank you sir
Wow...Bruce, That was exceptional!...I relate specifically to this due to my heredity from my mum, I took on 49% of her full blooded Norwegianism with an addition 25% Swedish character. When I was born and on me dads side, Irish @14% and Scottish @ 12%, though the numbers are but numbers I feel a kinship to all these things and thank you and the Shetland folk for inviting you to such a wonderful rich place to share with us here. Rock till you drop my friend, Break some legs!
Another great and informative video! The age of those first walls dividing farming plots shows how much we still have to learn about the complexity of what we refer to as “primitive” societies. And what a rich historical tapestry the Shetlands preserve! Thank you for showing it.
Cheers Gerard
Thank you for sharing your marvelous knowledge in such an interesting way! Your way of telling me a Story truly holds my attention throughout! I believe you should be recognized to a greater degree for your works.
